What life is like in Terrace bc

So I hope this makes it to the top of Google one day and can help another human being kind of understand what the vibe and feeling living in terrace is like. I know for myself I looked online and you can find only so much. So I'm going to try and get into some detail of what the lifestyle is like out here. I myself have only lived here for two years and I know what it's like to start fresh here.
I'll start with work, there is plenty to go around. If you don't mind picking up what you have to to get by. There is tons of service jobs available tons of shops in the general idea as Kal tires and parts shops for the trades. If you have and carpentry experience like myself you will find a job with in your first 2 weeks. ( Happened to me). I'm sure the other trades have plenty of work also. the LNG just opened, well approved a while ago and if your into the camp lifestyle they look for workers in Al aspects you can work in the camp as a cook house cleaner other services ( good for a woman). If your a guy the posibilitys are endless. Start wage for labour is like 27 bucks, you'd also be looking at a 2 week on 2 week off roatation. The LNG is located in kitimaatt which is 45 mins away. If you don't want to stay in camp you can bus back and forth to terrace. Also if anybody's from forestry we have a mill to work at too.The town is a growing town and will be for a long time. Lots of work here. Lots of oprutunity.
The outdoors/ scenery Terrace is a beautiful and jaw dropping place to live. There's mountains and lakes everywhere. When I first moved here I got a mountain resort vibe it was super cool. Lots to do in both summer and winter. The temperature in the summer is very nice if you like warm but not 30° warm. Many lakes and great beaches are just a drive away. Some you can get to by town on foot so no vehicle needed. Anywhere down by the skeena river is great. I'm not much of a offroader but from what I can tell alot of people do that. Lots of trails lots of mountains to climb with you side by side. The amount of hiking here is ridiculous. Easy trails to expert also rock climbing is huge here too. Also with beginner to expert levels to suit everyone's need. We have some world class biking trails too, once again from beginner to expert. If you commute on bike there's not many hills in terrace or south side. Defined by our over pass for the trains. Even if you live out in the surrounding are known as thorn hill. You only have a couple big hills and that's all. We have world class fishing available here too for part of the summer. Depending what you want to catch. If your an ocean Fisher price Rupert ( BC's North Port) is only 2 hours away and the drive there is top 10 most beautiful drives in Canada. (AMAZING) we have a holiday in the summer called river boat days and it's basically a whole week of events from drag racing hit to pass they drop a bunch of ducks down the river and if you $20 duck wins you usually get a boat as a prize. Pay 5 bucks to shoot a gun. And after all that. bands play in the park and venders set up. Feeling like a festival. Winter things to do is obviously shames. Many mountains to sled. The winters here are mild rarely going under 12 we do and don't get much snow depending on the day. We have late falls here and early springs. We actually have 4 seasons. We have apple trees and the town is litters with cherry trees. Lots of mushroom picking if you like that. So much that people make a living by doing just that. 20-40k in a season I've heard. ( I'm a northern boy and a brought my parka down here I actually had to sell it because I didn't need it. Was a 600 dollar jacket) it does rain alot here so get ready for that. Last year it was hot and no rain all summer long and this year it was nice for 8 days. You must remember that this is a temperate rain Forrest. The leaves! Omg! You see all the colors the mountain is a spectrum of oranges and reds to browns. Not much beatle kill around here too so in the summer it's just green it's beautiful.
Life style and general mood One thing that is different from other places. Is the town shuts down fairly early. Most restaurants are closed by 8. Not all but most. Some that stay open late are pizza hut Mr Mike's bosten pizza an dominos. Those are the main ones. For fast food we have Mc Donald's a&w taco bell KFC subway DQ Tim Hortons. And that's it. Ever major banking institution we have. We have a pool 3 different gyms. 2 are 24 hr. We have a Walmart a whole sale saveon Safeway for groceries. Lots of liquor stores where you can build points on every order and use those points once you have enough funds. We have vape shops and like 5 weed shops now lol. Marks warehouse. A board shop and an outdoorsmen shop. 4 thrift shops. Many gas stations. Lots of drop in sport to do as well ice skating base ball basket ball tennis badminton hockey. We have a community center that's where artists come to play music like snack mad child Merk. And others. There's a farmer's market at the park every Sunday. Lots of Nick backs and fresh produce. We have like 5 food trucks there usually scattered through out town we have a nice two screen movie theater with a couple arcade games. Everyone is super friendly in terrace.. more so that I've seen from living in different places all over BC. The schools are close elementary middle and high school. They have an amazing trades school here at the college( if your looking for funding and you live here and plan on going to LNG they will find everything for your 1st and second year. Which is amazing) we also have other college classes. A bus that goes everywhere for 2 dollars. You can even get to Kitimat on the bus for only 2 bucks. The night life! What every 20 something is woundering! So we have lots of pubs and a couple bars 1 casino and one club if you will. The pubs all have great food none that I didn't like. The casino is your regular slots sometimes poker games are held. Video poker and video black jack the food there is great! The northern ( what you would call the party spot or club ) is great they usually have a live band on the weekends along with a dj. It's greasy but it fun I'm sure I don't have to say much else. It's got 2pool tables there also. The best thing about all these bars in terrace is they all have their own shuttle service FOR FREE they even pick you up at home and drive you to your destination making bar hoping extremely easy and there really is no need to drink and drive!
The bad and ugly.
There is a homeless problem lots of people wandering the streets. People passed out on the side walk. People pushing carts full of their belongings. Some street people are annoying. Mostly keep you themselves tho. Drugs are rapid here there is no shortage. If you don't get into that life it won't ever find you tho. You have to look for it. We don't have major business like Cosco or anything like that. Buying furniture here is through the roof. Buying a home that's okay starts at 400k the town is going to get worse as the LNG keeps going through. Not much of a fancy dinner date town. Town closes early. Very hard to get a family doctor.
Annnnnddd that's a ramble. I missed a bunch of things I'm sure.
If anybody is looking to move here please ask all the questions you can and want I'd be happy to answer

Accessing all the Vancouver Bridges

Update notes: finished adding all the bridges, added a link to photos. I will try to format everything to be a bit nicer and/or make a copy at another location that allows for easienicer formatting.
As requested by raleighspritely in the other bridges thread, this post is intended to help generally newer riders figure out specifically how to get onto each bridge in each direction, where all most of the exit options go and any other weirdnesses each bridge may have.
I'll assume you know roughly where you are and roughly how to get to each bridge. Some are easy to find the entrances for (Burrard), some are weird (Cambie, southbound) and some have entrances a long way from where the cars access (Golden Ears) so if they're super weird I'll try and give you more specifics.
Photos from the day showing most of the bridges: https://imgur.com/a/RvTUs0V (missing: 2nd Narrows, KSB, Canada Line, Arthur Liang)
And now to talking about crossing bridges!
Granville - follow the instructions for Burrard or Cambie
If you insist on using the GSB (don't) SB access is easiest via Howe St and NB access at 5th & Granville
Burrard
Easiest to get onto IMO as the access is right at the ends of the bridge
Cambie
Going southbound on Cambie is super weird to get to unless you're already on Nelson St
Lion's Gate
North Bound:
South Bound:
Second Narrows/IronworkersThis is one of the weirdest/awkwardest, particularly at the north end
North Bound:
South Bound
Access is here basically across from Phibbs. Many ways to get to it, but you've gotta get to that spot to go south.
Exiting: takes you down through the trees, watch for the pair of switchbacks. You'll end up at the bottom of Skeena St.
Arthur Laing
I regard this as an "experts only" type bridge that I wouldn't recommend to anyone not comfortable with riding in fairly close proximity to cars. There's no separated lane and just a narrow shoulder. That said, I don't feel unsafe on this bridge for some reason, but that might just be from riding it a bunch and being used to riding next to cars. Anyways, onto how to get on/off:
Southbound: access is via the car ramp at where Marine & Granville all come together in a 6 lane clusterfuck that was meant to be the highway through Vancouver. Normally I access coming off NW Marine, onto the clusterfuck, pick up speed down the hill and (with a lot of shoulder checking) get across the right most lane onto the ramp. Go up the ramp and stick to the right.
Exiting: things get dicey/exciting. You'll be crossing roads at speed so be shoulder checking.
North Bound: you can either access off the paths off Airport Rd here or by riding north along Russ Baker Way and basically sticking right and following the signs to Vancouver.
Exiting: again a bit dicey with some potential lane crossing
Pitt River
This is one of the nicest crossings. All the recently built (or updated) bridges are really, really nice once you're on the deck (Pitt River, Port Mann, Golden Ears + Ironworkers post update).
The cycle/pedestrian lane is on the north side of the span and is nice and wide. Access on the west end requires crossing Belfast Ave/Fremont Connector that loops under the bridge. Since access is all for the one side crossing my instructions are written for West->East travel but basically just do them in reverse for East->West.
Coming from NW (Trabouley Poco Trail/Deboville Slough), you do a couple zigzags and hairpins and crossing Belfast St but you can see your target the whole time so this bridge is honestly one of the easiest to get onto.
Coming from the SW, you go under the bridge parallel to the Fremont Connector then see the access to your left. If you were to keep going on the path instead you'd eventually end up at Deboville Slough.
East end of the bridge drops you in Pitt Meadows. As you exit (eastbound) you can immediately do 180deg turn left to get onto the trails. Another left at the river to go south, north and you can make your way out to Pitt Lake on the trails. To access the trail parallel to, and on the south side of, Lougheed Highway take the left at the river then left again at Ferryslip Rd.
If you go straight Old Dewdney Trunk Rd is a pretty nice ride towards Maple Ridge.
Golden Ears
Alright, this one is possibly the most difficult unless you know exactly where to go, partly because they're a long way along the bridge from where cars access. The Southbound Access is at 113B & Airport Way (Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows). The northbound access is at 100A Ave & 201St (Langley)
Southbound
Northbound
Access is at 100A Ave & 201St. You go up the multilevel round ramp. Your exit will basically be the aforementioned 113B roundabout, you can go straight through it to get onto Maple Meadows Way towards the mall, right will change into 203St as it turns north or go left and west towards the airport.
Canada Line Bridge
This one is on the side of the Canada Line bridge section between Marine & Cambie Station & Bridgeport Station.
North connection is on Kent Ave S @ Cambie. However you have to go east from Kent Ave N & Cambie to turn south to get onto Kent Ave S and access the ramp. If you're coming down Cambie, hang a right on Kent Ave N.
South Connection is at River Road and Van Horne Way.
If you're going North then east, my recommendation is take Cambie north, then cut east at 59th. Kent Ave N between Cambie and Ontario sucks butt and cars are frequently impatient assholes on that section (it's also rough, needs a repave and has a lot of rail tracks).
If you're going north then west you can go west on Kent Ave N and then right on Heather before climbing a bit and taking the westbound route of your choice.
If you're just going north then Cambie, Ontario & Heather are all pretty good choices with Ontario & Heather being quieter. I can't remember how all of Heather's crossings are since I haven't ridden it past 59th in years.
If you're going South, you can go:
Formatting is becoming a pain because this is getting long. Sorry!
Port Mann
This one is like the Pitt River Bridge in that the pedestrian/bike path is only on the north/east side of the bridge deck.
West access is where the Port Mann passes over United Boulevard and where Unite intersects the Mary Hill Bypass offramps. If you're coming off the bridge you can go south/west on United and eventually work your way over towards Braid Station. If you go east on the Mary Hill Bypass you can connect to the Traboulay PoCo trail, Argue St and work your way up to the Pitt River bridge. There's also a mess of trails in and around Colony Farm but you're on your own for that :)
East access is a ways up a pretty decent hill at 152st/112Ave by Dogwood Campgrounds. If you're going north/west, the signage is good. Just don't take the overpass over the highway. How you get to 152/112...up to you. It's a big grid!
Alex Fraser
Ok, this one is another bit of a mess in terms of access. I don't think this one is technically unidirectional like the others, but I recommend riding the same way as cars are travelling and this guide will be based on that. Careful on the deck, there's a bunch of spots where you have to dodge the bases of signs and other spots where the path just shifts left/right.
Southbound:
You've made it over the Queensborough or come in from Richmond. You've made it onto the Annacis Channel bridge and are approaching Annacis island. You'll see a bus-stop on an island, you want to get there (if not busy, drop the curb & cut across, otherwise there's a crosswalk to use), take the crosswalk that goes parallel to the bus-only section of intersection, onto the sidewalk on the far-far side and then left and you'll see the path onto the bridge. You'll get dropped off with the choice of left or right. Left takes you towards HWY17, River Rd which are the two options for getting to the ferry (take River, it's quieter and only marginally slower). Right will take you under the bridge, and after you go past Planet Ice you can go left towards River Rd east, right-then-right to get onto Nordel north/east or just right for the Delta-South Surrey Greenway.
If you're trying to get to South Surrey, go as if you're going up Nordel, get over the overpass, then take the trail that cuts back to the right. This is the North Delta Greenway and is superior to the DSS Greenway in basically every way including being WAY smoother (I ride it on my carbon road bike on 25mm tires).
North Bound:
Starting from Planet Ice, take the path up onto the bridge, ride across, question why you're out here and didn't just take the Massey Shuttle to get home faster...
At the north end of the bridge, you'll end up next to the Annacis exit ramp. At the end of it, you want to take the small crosswalk onto the island with the bus stop, across Cliveden ave onto the island on the far side, then across another little crosswalk onto the path and hang a left. Stick to this path, you'll go back over the Annacis Channel and find yourself at a zig-zagging ramp. At the bottom of that you have the options of:hard right: path through to Hamilton Highway Park where you can take an overpass towards River Rd
left then right: onto Boundary Rd then Dyke rd, you can use this to get over towards Westminster Highway via Fraserwood Way.
left then left (generally recommended): take Boundary Rd north. At Boundary & Boyd you can go right to the Queensborough or left onto Westminster Hwy which you can use to get all the way to Richmond or to connect to River Rd
Queensborough
because New West is at a 45deg angle I'll be using "up/down and top/bottom" for this bridge because it's effectively a hill. Top is 22nd St station end, bottom is Queensborough Landing.
The top connection is just below 22nd St Station. If you're coming from 22nd St station just take the bridge down, it'll drop you on Boyd St. Left takes you to QB Landing. Right takes you to...not a lot. It's narrow, you'll probably have to slow down a bunch as you pass people.
If you're coming from Market Crossing area or New West (both via Marine Dr) I recommend taking the "up" side of the bridge down because it has about 1% of the traffic the "down" side does.
To get to it, the access is the ramp on the "cars up" side of the bridge. Otherwise, you can use the ramp on the "cars down" side to connect to the "down" side.
Either way as you're going down, watch for the hairpins at the bottom!
If you're going up and heading to downtown New West take the "up" side. Head east along Marine/Stewardson. You can eventually head right down a side street to get to S&O because that's why you're in New West right? If not, you're at S&O now. Best way to get through to the rest of downtown is via the Quay.
If you're going up and heading to anywhere else take the "down" side and go all the way to 22nd St Station. Right and past the station connects to 7th Ave across New West. Left you can use to get onto both Marine Dr or Marine Way to go west to Market Crossing, Big Bend, Glenlyon, River District. Straight turns into the BC Parkway and travels under the skytrain past Edmonds, Royal Oak, Metrotown stations.
Knight St
Recommendation: if you can, keep going west and take the Canada Line Bridge. This bridge was NOT intended for cyclists at all as you're about to learn and this section may get a little rant-y.
Northbound:
Southbound (I haven't gone SB on this bridge in a long time)
Access is via the onramp at Inverness & Marine. If crossing SB on Inverness watch for cars not understanding how stoplights work and driving into the intersection.
Take the on-ramp, hop onto the sidewalk.
First exit is Mitchell Island, get across the island. Get back onto the sidewalk.
Second exit is Bridgeport and provided you take that off-ramp you'll end on a sidewalk on Bridgeport pointed west. First intersection will be Sweden Way, turn left for IKEA, right takes you up to Vulcan Way which can be used to connect to River, No5 & No6 Rds.
Opinion: the KSB needs a cycling infrastructure update more than the GSB. The GSB is bad, but at least Cambie and Burrard are basically adjacent.
Oak St Bridge
Disclaimer: I have ridden across this bridge exactly once, only north bound on the southbound side. I will provide links to where I think the access to the NB path is, but I can't guarantee it.
This accesses I used for this bridge are near enough to the Canada Line Bridge so I would recommend just using that. Also the access Oak St Bridge are all off bigger roads so just awkward to get to.
The north end of the SB path is a crosswalk between 71st Ave & 72nd Ave on Oak St. ( https://www.google.com/maps/place/49%C2%B012'22.1%22N+123%C2%B007'49.4%22W/@49.2061485,-123.1325803,765m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d49.2061446!4d-123.1303973 )
The south end of the SB path is at the southeast end of the Shanghai Wonderful restaurant parking lot. https://www.google.com/maps/place/49%C2%B011'30.5%22N+123%C2%B007'10.7%22W/@49.1918179,-123.1201938,191m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d49.1918174!4d-123.1196477
I *think* the south end of the NB path is here: https://www.google.com/maps/place/49%C2%B011'25.0%22N+123%C2%B006'55.9%22W/@49.1902744,-123.1163805,382m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d49.1902728!4d-123.1155145
I don't know how to get there.
I think the north end of the NB path is effectively the intersection of SW Marine @ Shaughnessy St. https://www.google.com/maps/place/49%C2%B012'17.7%22N+123%C2%B007'45.5%22W/@49.2047843,-123.1293076,104m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m6!3m5!1s0x0:0x0!7e2!8m2!3d49.2049204!4d-123.1293171
Once you're on the bridge it's just ride along until you're at the other end. The surface is weird concrete sections that have all gone a bit convex so it's a weird kinda bumpy ride.
rest to be continued later including: Pitt River, Golden Ears, Port Mann, Alex Fraser, Queensborough, Knight St, Canada Line, Oak St and Arthur Laing. If you need to go between New West and Surrey I recommend just taking the Skytrain.

Great Canadian Gaming (Time to Sell/Short?)

Great Canadian Gaming (T.GC) has 25 gaming, entertainment and hospitality facilities in Ontario, B.C. and Atlantic regions of Canada.
Over 95% of the revenue & EBITDA comes from BC & Ontario, of which each province has signaled that casino's will be among the last things to open in their provinces. There is NO prospective reopen date!
Heading into this weekend Great Canadian shares are off just 30% YTD without a dollar of revenue for almost 4 months and no visibility on when revenue or profitability will return.
In comparison, Gamehost Inc (T.GH), which operates casinos in Alberta that are open is also off 30% YTD. MGM Resorts (MGM), which also has its casinos open is off 42% YTD and Las Vegas Sands (LVS) which also has its casinos open is down 30% YTD.
Additionally, when the Casinos can reopen, one can expect very stringent rules that reduce revenues and increase costs, such as when Atlantic City Casinos reopened this weekend. Rules, are likely to include temperature checks on entering, mandatory wearing of masks, half capacity at table games, no smoking, drinking, or eating while inside the casinos and a cap on overall capacity of 50% occupancy.
This feels like a solid candidate to short sell over a medium time horizon. Any opinions from the community?

Maybe no crypto in cold storage but a pile of cash in Richmond, BC?

Let's connect the dots here:
(Sorry to not add a link for every talking point)

What we know for sure:

- Patryn/Dhanani has been involved in several money laundering schemes since the early 2000's. One could almost say he was always at the cutting edge of electronic/internet based money laundering.
He co-founded Quadriga 6 months after the collapse of his previous operation. (GlobeandMail)

- Quadriga had no actual bank accounts for years. (first court filings from Jen)

- Crypto prices on Quadriga were consistently, significantly higher than on any other exchange. (we all saw that)

- Quadriga created 8 or so internal accounts with aliases that turned out to be moving huge amounts of crypto out of the exchange. (today's Monitor report)

- Quadriga offered cash deliveries/pick ups as a withdrawal method. In fact, they were still talking of opening up more locations all the way into DecembeJanuary.
In one of the articles that talked about the cash-by-mail system, two locations in Canada were mentioned as the origin of those envelopes full of cash; one place in Quebec and Richmond, BC. (WSJ ?)

- Richmond, BC is the epicenter of a shadow banking system that handles vast amounts of cash and launders them through casinos, horse tracks, real estate and luxury cars. One single "bank" was said to have handled $ 250m of cash in a single year, and apparently there are dozens of those operations in Richmond alone. (was all over the news lately; good W5 piece about it)

So let's put the pieces together:

Quadriga was a crypto exchange and a money laundering operation.

- Dirty cash is being deposited to Quadriga's Richmond cash account at one or several of these shadow banks.

- Quadriga credits those funds to one of the big 8 alias-accounts, buys crypto on their own exchange and sends them to wherever the dirty client wants it via a network of exchanges, mixers and so on... Or the clients do that part themselves, whatever...

- You need a constant influx of crypto to be bought in cash and sent out, so you set your market making algorithm to always trade around a 3-8% premium to attract arbitrage and people cashing out.

- The last piece is how to pay those people selling you their coins? During the bull run of 2016/17 Quadriga gets over run with new clients and fresh "clean deposits". Perfect. Sprinkle in some people willing to withdraw in cash. No problem.
When things get a little tighter you infuse cash into your girlfriends and future wife's companies and let their normal banking relationships process some of those withdrawals.

You probably also pay yourself in cash. (Apparently Cotten always had 50k in cash with him wherever he went)
With the cash you earn you go out and buy a whole bunch of properties, boats etc. to launder that part, too.

When the bull run ended, so did the easy times. Clean money deposits dry up and you probably still sit on a whole pile of cash stashed in some Richmond office. With crypto prices falling there were probably also more regular clients throwing in the towel and cashing out.
+ those freaking real banks won't accept your 20-something-million dollar drafts because they smell that something ain't right...
You better start to really push cash deliveries and new pick up locations as an alternative.

So what happened in the past year when things got dicier and dicier?
You could either maybe slow down your dirty money influx and just be an exchange for a while until you figure things out.
Or you could raid it all and burn the house down.

There are probably a few holes in my version of this story, but I would not be surprised if in a few years cops discover $50m in cash belonging to Quadriga in some unrelated raid/investigation.

FIFA Women's World Cup in Winnipeg - FAQs

I've noticed a lot of repeat questions being asked recently from visitors who are coming to Winnipeg for the FIFA Women's World Cup (June 8-16). Here are the most common questions: I can add to this if anyone has any suggestions.
Where is the stadium?
Investor's Group Field is at the University of Manitoba on the south end of the city.
Where should I stay?
There've been several news stories about how all the hotels in Winnipeg - even the Alt Hotel, which just opened - are booked solid. Sorry.
However, you can try alternatives:
(With suggestions from majikmonkie).
How do I get to the stadium from my hotel?
FIFA put together a guide on transportation options. The first two options are for driving, but I would recommend NOT doing that, especially if you're driving there during afternoon rush hour. Pembina Highway (which is the main route to the stadium from downtown) will probably become a parking lot in the afternoon with all the additional traffic.
However, there are four Park-n-Ride locations:
The Park-n-Ride costs $5 for people over the age of 12. Buses start departing 2 hours before afternoon kickoff. You might want to make a point of catching one of the first couple buses, since Pembina Highway is going to be a nightmare.
A note from werno - DO NOT try parking on the residential streets around the stadium. You will be ticketed and possibly towed.
Beaver Bus and Greyhound will also be operating a downtown hotel shuttle (also $5). Buses start departing 2 hours before afternoon kickoff. You might want to make a point of catching one of the first couple buses, since Pembina Highway is going to be a nightmare. If you're staying downtown, look for a shuttle stop (white circles) near your hotel: https://i.imgur.com/hyFSt9Z.jpg
(With suggestions from majikmonkie).
In not-stadium-specific transit news: Downtown Biz is going to be offering a free trolly to get around downtown. Winnipeg Transit also has free buses that will get you around downtown; #1,2, and 3 are all free all the time. (Thanks to supercantaloupe for the addition.)
I'm coming in from [country]. Do I have to get my money exchanged or will establishments take my US dollars/pounds/pesos/bits?
If you're using your credit card, most places will take a Visa and Mastercard regardless of country of origin. Most credit cards will give you a pretty fair exchange rate. However, you might still want cash for small purchases, bus fares, parking, etc.
Some places might take US dollars, but it will either be at par (which would be a horrible deal for you) or at an unfavourable exchange rate. It's probably a good idea to get your cash exchanged if you plan on carrying cash.
Also, plan on getting handfuls of change back when you pay. Canada has coins for $2 and $1, so after a few transactions you've got a handful of big coins to carry around. Also also, Canada no longer uses the penny, so all cash transactions will be rounded up or down to the nearest $0.05. Debit and credit transactions are still charged to the penny.
(With suggestions from Becau5eRea5on5, kent_eh and tmlrule).
How do I drive to Winnipeg from the US?
(Info via scopar). There are several border crossings between Manitoba and the US, with 3 crossings from Minnesota and 11 from North Dakota. However, all of the border crossings a very small except for the Emerson, MB/Pembina, ND crossing that is at the end of the I-29. This crossing has multiple lanes and is open 24 hours a day. The other border crossings are usually single lanes and have limited hours of operations. You can find information on the border crossings from North Dakota and Minnesota .
US citizens need proof of citizenship to enter Canada: a passport, birth certificate, or citizenship certificate. A passport will make your crossing the least stressful, and will probably make getting back into the US easier as well. The CBSA has information on identification requirements on their website . If you have a criminal record, you may have trouble at the border. This includes a DUI, which will probably prevent you from entering Canada. The US/Canada share access to criminal record databases so they will look it up.
Don't bring firearms or ammo with you. Canada has very different and more restrictive gun laws than the US. There is no constitutional right to bear arms in Canada, so please leave them at home. The CBSA link above has a information on prohibited items. There are also limits on the amount of booze/cigarettes you can bring with you. When crossing the border (both ways), it's always best to be upfront and don't hide anything. If they discover you lied about something, you're more likely to be pulled over and searched. I'd highly suggest doing a search of your car before you hit the road to make sure you don't leave anything unwanted in there.
Where can I get a drink?
(Info via landlubber1976). Legal drinking age is 18. Drinking in public (i.e. outside a restaurant, hotel or private home) isn't recommended and is illegal. We're not Europe. You probably won't get too much hassle, but it might cause someone to call the police on you. Don't drink and drive, please.
Alcohol generally more expensive than the US, by a fair bit.
Most restaurants will be licensed, and some may allow you to bring your own bottle of wine, but unless that bottle means something special to you, it probably isn't worth it after they apply their corkage fee. You can order a bottle of wine with dinner and you can take what you didn't finish home with you. Just make sure it is in the trunk if you're in a car, or at least not accessible.
Is there an official FIFA FanFest in Winnipeg?
Here's the lowdown (thanks to scopar for the info):
Winnipeg Fan Zone
What: Open to the public (free) on June 6 (with a viewing party of Canada’s opening match). Open to FIFA Women’s World Cup™ Winnipeg Stadium ticket-holders on matchdays only.
Where: Winnipeg Stadium (Investors Group Field)
Hours of Operation
What else should we do while we're in Winnipeg?
Well, there's lots to do. Special things happening while you're here:
Anyway, welcome to Winnipeg!

#FUNBELT: Sun Belt Media Day, Part 2(B): Georgia State

#FUNBELT: Sun Belt Media Day, Part 2(B): Georgia State

By Honestly_
/CFB Media – The Redditwide Leader in Sports!

Intro

Continuing my series of write-ups on Sun Belt Football Media Day, which took place on July 20th at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans:
  1. Sun Belt Conference
  2. Sun Belt Teams (A, B)
  3. Behind-the-scenes experience
Throughout my visit I did my best to find answers to many of the questions and interests you all brought up in the earlier thread (though some weren't feasible as they were better addressed at an AD rather than a coach or player). McElhaney did a lot of work as well, sitting down with numerous players.

TEAMS (con't)

Teams are listed in the chronological order of appearance. Note that some press conferences went longer than others depending on the number of questions that were being asked.
This update is only one team: struggling Georgia State, touted by some on /CFB as the 2025 National Champion Panthers.

Georgia State Panthers

Attendees:
  • Coach: Trent Miles
  • Players: Joseph Peterson (Sr., LB) and Donovan Harden (Sr., WR)
OOC Slate:
  • Charlotte
  • @ Oregon
  • Liberty (FCS, projected top-25)
  • @ Ball State
The Lay of the Land
To fully appreciate the situation at Georgia State, as well as the position of Coach Trent Miles, it helps to examine their brief history as a program: The Panthers were actually a founding member of the Sun Belt back in 1976, but left in 1981 (the conference started sponsoring football in 2001). They announced the creation of a football program in 2008, fielded their first team as an FCS Independent in 2010, and joined the rest of their athletic programs in the Colonial Athletic Association (FCS) for the 2012 season—all as planned. However in April 2012, just before its inaugural CAA season and only two seasons after the program began, the Sun Belt's brand new commissioner Karl Benson sent an invitation to join the SBC as a full, FBS member. A fair number of people were surprised by the invitation, including their first coach, Bill Curry (“For us to be able to move this quickly is something I would have never dreamed of [. . .] I don’t think we had a choice.”). Indeed, this was during the chaotic conference shifts that were rearranging CFB: Georgia State's administration conducted a study that determined they would be a good fit for a FBS conference; the Sun Belt wanted better access to the Atlanta TV market. The stars aligned and the Sun Belt had an 11th member.
The choice of a coaching veteran like Curry to launch the program appeared to follow the model laid out by FAU's formation behind Howard Schnellenberger (later followed by UTSA's selection of Larry Coker), but Curry's previous tenures with established programs at nearby Georgia Tech, Bama, and Kentucky didn't appear to mesh well with building one from scratch: his win totals went from six, to three, to one (in that only season of CAA play). Before the one-win 2012 season, Curry sounded a bit tired of the current college football environment when talking about the move to the Sun Belt: “When all the arrows pointed to ‘Yes, do this’ then we had to move quickly because if you don’t, you get left in the dirt the way it is these days. Things move so fast in this world.” He retired after the season.
Enter the Sun Belt, enter Trent Miles.
In two years of Sun Belt membership, the Panthers have yet to win a conference game. They're 2-33 over the last three seasons. Those two wins were FCS teams; two wins out of thirteen games against FCS opponents. Coach Trent Miles has been at the helm for the most recent two seasons, starting 0-12 and following it up with 1-11 for 2014. The school's only won 11 total games its five-year existence. It's hard to blame the struggles on being a new program when conference-mate South Alabama started their program in 2009 and went bowling last year; similarly Old Dominion also began in 2009 and hasn't been struggling nearly as much (going 11-2 in its final year of FCS and doing reasonably well in C-USA). Or look at UTSA: started a year after Georgia State with similar plans to start as an FCS program, it was also issued an unexpected invitation to join the FBS (by WAC Commissioner...Karl Benson), but have managed to stay competitive in C-USA. If anything, it doesn't seem outlandish to think Sun Belt Commissioner Benson expected similar performance out of Georgia State in the SBC. That hasn't happened, at least in football—Georgia State basketball has flourished in the Sun Belt under Coach Ron Hunter (but that program is also much older).
Because of how quickly they rose to FBS, and because of their cramped location in the heart of a major city, the infrastructure is playing catch-up with the program's ambitions. It's a very urban campus, located next to downtown Atlanta and the Georgia State Capitol. Their practice field sits across the freeway in an industrial area next to train tracks, the field house used to be a bottling plant. They're putting the finishing touches on a new football strength and conditioning facility next to their practice field—the projected cost is $600k-$700k, with an additional $300k for equipment. To put that in perspective: Texas just announced they're saving $300k per year (despite a $7m profit) by cutting free meals for coaches. It's a different ballgame at the entry level of FBS, and Georgia State is gradually putting the pieces together while simultaneously fielding a team at the highest division in college football. It shouldn't be a surprise they're struggling as they have.
With that perspective, Coach Trent Miles came to the podium ready to address the status of a long-term building project—one that he feels comfortable with because he had a the same zero-win and one-win start to his previous position as head coach of FCS Indiana State (they had 6 wins in year three). When a reporter tried to soften his question by saying “the season may not have gone the way you expected”, Miles clarified that “yeah, I did.” He compared the job at Georgia State to building a house: “For weeks all you see is a hole in the ground. You don't see what's going on underneath and they're pouring the foundation. We've poured the foundation, now the frame is up”
In the process of building an FBS program from almost scratch, Miles played 18 true freshman his first year in 2013. Now those players are veteran juniors. He feels he's on course with the progression for building the program. They had more close games in 2014, leading two bowl teams in the 4th quarter. He views the 2015 season as moving the team from the “how-to-compete stage” to the “how-to-win stage.”
"You'd be shocked at how much confidence we have."
Let's take a moment to look back again on 2014: They had an abysmal -22 turn over ratio, the worst in the nation. They managed several close losses to ULL, South Alabama, and NMSU (two of which were bowl teams). Depth was a major weakness: They started the season with only 68 scholarship players and the attrition of playing an FBS schedule led the wheels to fly off in their final five games. By the second-to-last game at Clemson the Panthers had 52 people on the bus—and only 16 scholarship defensive players (they lost 28-0). They open 2015 with 82 scholarship players.
The Panthers were given an infusion of ready-to-play transfer talent from UAB, their six players second only to South Alabama's 10 (+ UAB's OC); half of those players are expected to help strengthen the needy defense. Coach Miles said they interviewed each potential transferee to make sure they were the right fit for the building effort at Georgia State, and so they appeared to quickly fit into the system during the spring—within a week it wasn't easy to tell they were transfers.
Miles is particularly confident in his offense. He's set two goals for 2015: Take care of the football (unsurprisingly) and improve the running game to take pressure off the QB. Last season the Panthers' QB, JC-transfer Nick Arbuckle, had a solid year given the situation, throwing for 3283 yards (60.4%) with 23 TDs and 17 INTs. As Arbuckle returns for his senior season, Miles sees continuing improvement and hopes to be able to provide him with better protection to reduce pressure and mistakes. Arbuckle should be helped by the return of touted receivers senior WR Donovan Harden, junior WR Robert Davis, and senior TE Joel Ruiz. Although the running game was beset by injuries that created terrible results (10th in the SBC, 120th in FBS—the leading rusher only had 354 yards!), they do return experience with several lineman and their original starting RB, so improvement is possible if they can stay healthy. That -22 turnover ratio appears to have nowhere to go but up.
I would be remiss if I didn't mention Georgia State's offensive coordinator, Jeff Jagodzinski, who may be one of the most undervalued assistant coaches in college football. Jagodzinski's coaching career was promising: successful coordinator from college to the NFL, hired to replace Tom O'Brien has head coach at BC. In his first season he took the Eagles to 11-wins, and at one time BCS #2, with QB Matt Ryan leading his offense; he followed 9-wins his second year—then the wheels came off in unprecedented fashion: after being told not to interview for the HC position of the Jets (BC was still smarting from O'Brien's departure to NC State), he did anyway and was fired by BC after two seasons (the Jets hired Rex Ryan). He joined the Bucs as OC in 2009 only to be fired before the preseason ended. He then coached the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL but was fired after a season. After spending 2012 as an unpaid WR coach of NAIA's Ave Maria he was scooped up to be Miles' OC at Georgia State. If he can continue to develop the Panthers' offense it will do well to rebuild his reputation.
"Our offense was good, our defense was offensive!"
Miles acknowledged the struggles on defense. Last year, in allowing an average of 43.3 points per game, they ranked at or near the bottom of every category but passing defense—because no one needed to pass when the running game was so effective.
Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter returns for his third season after following Miles from Indiana State, but there's a mostly new slate of defensive assistants under him. The players were seriously banged up last season: as noted above, they only had 16 healthy scholarship players left on defense in their penultimate game. They've had some talent infusion via transfers: UAB transfers, LB Alonzo McGee and S Bobby Baker in particular, were singled out by Miles for looking good. They also have an interesting transfer from Canada, by way of New Mexico Military Institute (JC), DE Julien Laurent. I asked Miles about it and he said Laurent is an example of how Miles' staff needs to be willing “overturn stones” to find talent (I wonder if they sent someone to scout potential diamonds in the IFAF World Cup, there had to be at least a handful of playable transfers out there, and coming to live in Atlanta wouldn't be unappealing to international players).
That's not to say the existing defense is without notable players: Sr. LB Joe Peterson has been the team's top tackler in the past three years, is its uncontested star and, more importantly, its leader. Miles noted having a veteran player like Peterson gives the Panthers something they were missing: as the team is only 5 years old, it didn't have the corp of experienced players to act as leaders and set the tone for how players are expected to perform on and off the field. This season he's seeing those leaders emerge to instill expectations on the next generation of players.
"When wives and families count as half your attendance..." (you've got work to do)
Miles likened expectations of some folks to taking his five kids through the drive-through at McDonalds: people want it fast. He emphasized patience, there's no quick fix. At the same time, he acknowledged wins generate interest and attendance, hence the quote above. Georgia State only lists the bottom of the Georgia Dome for capacity (28k) and they officially averaged only a little over half that (15,006); but that's “announced attendance” which includes every ticket paid for and given away, not who actually showed up. The average was boosted by 28,427, mostly Georgia Southern fans, who came up to see their game in Atlanta; the low point were the 3,485 announced for the season finale against Texas State.
Another problem facing Georgia State is the reputation as a “commuter school”; while more and more students are living on campus and having a traditional four year education, their alumni network isn't the same as one with more connection to a campus life tradition. Georgia State isn't just building a football program from the ground up, it's building the essence, tradition, and connection to one's alma mater. Everyone, from administrators to Coach Miles, is hoping the school can acquire the Braves' soon-to-be-vacated Turner Field and turn it into a proper home football stadium as part of a $300m redevelopment project of the area. It's not a perfect fix to attendance woes, but it would be a step to making it more inviting to fans. However, while the project is favored by the mayor, it's hardly a done deal (just recently there's been a pitch by several casinos). If Turner Field falls through it's not entirely clear what the Panthers' “plan B” will be other than continuing the imperfect status quo and using the successor to the Georgia Dome.
The good news for Georgia State fans is the administration appears to appreciate the Herculean task faced by their head coach, and continues to support the program. Last year the school replaced their AD, bringing in Charlie Cobb from Appalachian State—his nine years include experience with supporting a successful transitional football team (albeit one that was already an FCS power); under his recent tenure, Georgia State moved forward with the needed strength and conditioning facility next to their practice field. If Miles can muster some more wins, the administration should continue to be patient.
Will Miles' Indiana State model work at Georgia State?
Talking to veteran players from Appalachian State, Georgia Southern and South Alabama—players who similarly saw their teams move up from FCS—I asked about the differences they saw between levels of competition. A common thread was the need to be at the top of their game for each opponent: where not all FCS teams were threatening, all FBS teams play more consistently (in addition to increases in size and speed). The vets said there were FCS opponents they knew they could have an off game against. That would seem to offer more opportunities to pick off low-hanging fruit with competent play. So when Miles points to his work at Indiana State that took the FCS wins from 0-1-6-6-7, it doesn't necessarily convince me that his FBS program will see a similar rise in year three.
However, I don't want to leave off with a feeling of doom and gloom. There are some positive signs: the young team is maturing, with now juniors and seniors who've got plenty of game experience. They have more depth. A -22 turnover ratio means there's nowhere to go but up. Several close losses, and a few of those against good teams, seems to indicate an improvement in win total is possible. Four or even five wins wouldn't be unthinkable with games against Charlotte, NMSU, Liberty, as well as rebuilding teams at Troy and South Alabama (though they miss Idaho). I asked Coach Miles what he would define as a successful season, his answer was simple: “Wins.”
As an aside, and something you can probably sense from the quotes above, Coach Miles was probably the most interesting coach at Sun Belt Media Day. He's personable, clearly intelligent enough to know the situation he's facing, and engaging to listen to. He's willing to be honest, perhaps a bit more honest than his SID would prefer, but really: When you're tasked with turning the least prepared team in the nation (in both talent and infrastructure) into an FBS contender, you've got to get people on your side. I hope Georgia State fans appreciate that because, if his plan works in the next few seasons, he's going to be a good person to have as the face of the program.
PLAYERS:
Joe Peterson (Sr. LB) said, while the accolades are nice to have, he really want to win games—in all of his answers he genuinely seemed to want the defense to buy into “speaking and envisioning” success, something he wants to instill in the younger players as their leader. As such, he feels he needs to take ownership of the good and bad. When he arrived on campus and became a true freshman starting LB, he didn't know how to be a leader but found it fell on him because of his play (he's been the team's lead tackler each year). He's enjoyed seeing the team grow up around him, and is excited about the new strength and conditioning facility, along with a new S&C coach.
McElhaney asked him several questions:
  • On depth – He was please from what he's seen with the combined maturity of the team (the return of key defensive lineman who played as freshman and sophomores) as well as Juco transfers who've been able to plug right into the defense in the front seven. “The team just went from being young to old.”
  • About the Clemson game (28-0 loss) – Peterson sat out the game due to injury, but observed from the sideline: Although they were shut out, the ability to hold an offense like Clemson's to 28 actually gave the defense, particularly the young players, some confidence to see that they could do it. Those 28 were the fewest scored against the Panthers.
  • Any young players to look out for? – CBs Chan Sullivan (So) and Jerome Smith (RS Fr) both impressed Peterson.
  • Did the injuries plaguing the running back corp put extra pressure on the defense? – While the running backs were definitely beaten up (they had to move a DB over!), he felt it fell on the defense, and on him as a leader, to get them ready to play “no matter what happens.”
Donovan Harden (RS Sr., WR, transferred from Illinois State), in talking about his growth as a player, noted both appreciating the amount of work (and time management) needed to do academically and the value of strength conditioning for his play on the field. As a true freshman he played at 153 lbs (“running for my life”) he's since wanted to add “armor” and is playing at 175 lbs. Like Peterson, he found himself being a leader based on his success on the field last season (his first playing for Georgia State), especially as he started garnering recognition as the season went on (1st Team Sun Belt, Biletnikoff Watch List).
McElhaney asked him several questions:
  • After the injuries at RB forced the team to lean on passing, do you feel that trend will continue? – Given the success the team had in the passing game, he's optimistic they'll continue to be pass oriented (“if it isn't broke, don't fix it”). Happy with the overall quality of the receiving corp.
  • Did the running game being injured hurt the passing game? – Yes, a lot of opponents were dropping eight which hurt efficiency so if they can balance it out it should benefit the offense overall.
  • How much do you think Nick Arbuckle has improved as a QB? – “He has improved a lot and I have learned a lot from him about leadership, he's always doing the right thing: first in the weight room . . . always raring to go.”
  • Who's a younger player we should look out for? – Incoming freshman Penny Hart (WR).
  • Do you think you'll break 1000 yards this season? – “That's the plan!” (827yds in 2014)

Reflections on my trip

Before going to Aruba I, like most people of my generation (late 20s), googled the crap out of Aruba. I especially googled what life outside of the resort/hotel zone is like. While there was lots of info on Aruba hardly any of it pertained to the non-resort life. Meaning, when people on forums ask "where do the locals eat", or "where can I get a reasonably priced meal", the answers given were absolutely given by people living the high life in Aruba. $30 entrees? The locals aren't eating there. And, if the place advertises itself as "where the locals eat!" (like Driftwood does), then that's not where the locals eat. That isn't to say that none of the locals eat there, as I'm sure many do. But when people from my generation ask "where do the locals eat?" they mean "where does the working class eat?".
Now that I'm back from my short trip to Aruba, I feel like I have some info to share to others of my generation who aren't looking for a 5-star Aruban experience, but who are traveling on a shoestring, want to see Aruba without paying >$100 for a two hour tour in a 4x4 with six strangers, etc.
First tip: Airbnb
Hotels in Aruba are plentiful, and very nice. They're not even necessarily expensive. But Airbnb has penetrated Aruba and it's great. We were lucky to stay with a local who has an attached suite, rather than simply simply renting out their condo while they're away. As a result, we had locals (like, 365 days a year-type locals) feeding us info. Airbnb also kind of forces you outside of the hotel zone: we were a good 8-10 min drive away from the Highrise area, which helps when you're trying to be adventurous and explore the neighbourhoods. Our Airbnb hosts were very attentive, provided a lot of "gear", like a cool, beach chairs, maps, coupons, flippers, etc. They warned us when something went down on the island (we were there during the recent flash flood), and had ideas about how to get around. And of course, Airbnb is cheap, often come with kitchens, which allow you to head to the supermarkets and cook using local ingredients. Which brings me to the next tip.
Tip two: Supermarkets
Prior to arriving, whenever grocery shopping was mentioned in anything I googled it basically always referred to the large supermarkets, and especially Super Food. We went to Superfood and found the prices comparable to grocery prices in Canada (even after the conversion. Also note, we live in Victoria, BC). Items that were packaged (like cereal) were more expensive. Fruits (like limes) were ever so slightly less. And everything else (like meat and veggies) were about the same.
And while Superfood was great, we found little to no reason to return; there are plentiful mini-marts and neighbourhood markets were everything was cheaper. There was nothing we needed that we couldn't find in these markets, from groceries to sunblock to booze to personal care products. I honestly don't think you need to bother with the large supermarkets, the little neighbourhood ones will do. If you're in the high rise zone, the closest one is at the Unicasa, beside the Wendy's. If you're anywhere else, there are lots.
Tip three: Beaches
The Palm Beach and Eagle Beach areas are indeed much fun. There's a lot going on, people to mingle with, booze everywhere, and happy hour is easy to find.
If you're anything like us, we kinda didn't love that. We wanted more spacious beaches, with calmer atmospheres. In that case, allow me to suggest three spots.
The first is just off the high rise beach zone. Heading towards the lighthouse, right after the casino on the left if a parking lot that was never ever full. The only people that seemed to park there were trucks with boat trailers. Park here and find a very peaceful beach with no rocks, and soft sand. It was a fabulous spot, with all the same view and sand quality of Palm Beach without any of the buzz and crap.
Second, is a short walk from the lighthouse north, across the dunes, to an oddly shaped rock I doubt you could miss. When we first arrived there were some nudists there hanging out in what is clearly a secluded and rarely frequented spot. Water was clear, and the view was spectacular. Not to mention how good water feels after a 10 min walk through the desert sand dunes in a blazing sun.
Third, is Daimari beach, which I'll say more about in the next tip...
Tip four: Arikok
Definitely worth the time. But also not something you have to rent jeeps for or take expensive atv tours. If you dedicate a day to Arikok (like, 8 am to 5pm) you can do all you need to. I'll tell you what we did on our "Arikok day", which was probably the highlight of our trip.
First, recognizing that Arikok is a desert, we woke up early and drove to the main entrance to the park. We arrived exactly at 8:00am on a day that was slightly cloudy. Bought our wrist band and promptly exited the park the way we came. Leaving the park there's an immediate right that says "Daimari" onto a gravel/dirt road. We followed that until it intersected witha paved road and a sign saying that to the right is an entrance to Arikok. Down that road is the Shete entrance to Arikok. It allows you to turn a very long hike to the Natural Pool into a short hike. Hiking from Shete to Natural pool took 45min (and I am in no way in shape). We arrived just as the first tour left, allowing us full access to the pool with not another soul around for about and hour. Then, heading up the coast from the Natural Pool we hiked the 15 min to Daimari Beach, which was easily our favourite beach of the whole island. It is isolated, strikingly beautiful, unique in that the "shelf" that has been eroded in the middle divides the beach in two, and most importantly there was shade provided by the cliffs. This was vital, since by this time the sun was out in full force. Hiking became less than safe, so, we stayed, lounging at the beach, for hours waiting for the sun to go down a bit. This was wonderful. Shaded by the cliff, dipping in the slightly wavy ocean, in the beautiful location... Daimari is an Aruban paradise. Two tour companies took people here while we were there. They jumped off the cliffs and promptly left. For us, we drank 5L of water on this hike.
As soon as 3:00 rolled around, we started to pack up and began our hike out (about 55min).
Now, since we spent so long at Daimari we decided to do more Arikok the next day. We drove around to the south side of the island and the Vader entrance. We easily drove our small, compact rental car up the gravel road alongside the wind turbines (very impressive), and up to the Guadiriki caves. Spent some time there and continued up to the Fontein caves and Boca Prins. After returning, it was all basically just a couple hours; less than a half day. If we had planned our hike to be an hour or two quicker we likely could have done it all in a single day. Since we didn't drive all the way through the park's main road I can't speak to the drive-ability of it all. However, I do have some car tips!
Tip five: Cars
The rental companies, and the Arikok website, do a fair amount of fear mongering about the quality of the road that runs through the park (IMO). If I were to speculate, it would be because the nation's economy makes a fair amount of coin off of Jeep rentals, 4x4 tours and such. So, they would have you believe that travelling into Arikok with a compact car spells certain doom for your vehicle, and the rental agenies will warn you multiple times that if you have car damage or trouble that occurs within Arikok park, you are not covered at all, even if you purchased their limited liability coverage plan.
So, I was pretty worried as well about road conditions but there was no need to be. Day two we drove our little compact rental through the road that runs from the California lighthouse, along past the dunes and down the North East coast, up to the chapel. It was slow going, to be sure, as we made sure to go at little more than the speed of a quick walk or slow jog. But at that speed all the bumps become easily managable and we didn't bottom out the car once.
Similarly, driving the dirt road past the wind turbines in Arikok and up to Boca Prins was more than fine. It's like driving a country road in rural Alberta, in my opinion. Take it slow and you'll be golden.
As long as I'm talking about cars, a few sub tips: they don't do as many lights in Aruba. Mostly round abouts. Might wanna brush up on round about etiquette before going if you're not familiar. The map that you get at the airport has common road signs on it! And while the road system on the ground looks complicated, with many un-named roads branching off of main routes, honestly, just worry about the main routes (of which there aren't many). Parking in ample pretty well everywhere, even downtown. It's cheap for pay parking where that's needed. No right turns on red lights. And finally, they do street lights on the same side of the intersection as where you stop, rather than opposite. So, you kinda have to lean forward to see the lights if you're in a low vehicle.
Tip six: Eats
I can't express enough how the most mentioned places were just tourist traps. Driftwood, Smokey Joe's, Wacky Wahoos: all very expensive. That isn't to say they're bad (we thought Wacky Wahoos was fabulous), but there not "where the locals/working class eat". The best (in terms of the matchup of quality and cost and authenticity) of these more expensive places that we went, we felt, was Red Fish. The catch of the day pan fried was delicious, and the local corn bread stuff they serve all over town was the tastiest at Red Fish as well. We never got to Zeerover's, sadly. I'm bummed about that. But the point is I can't comment on it.
The best recommendation I have for those who want some real eats is to explore the 4A/B route. There are a lot of neighbourhood eats along that road that are fabulous. Fermin's BBQ was a highlight, where you could get a 2 person BBQ Platter with Yuca Frita (fucking YUM) for 34 Florins (whereas all those places mentioned about are usually 50 Florins or more per dish!). Buckets of six local beers for 25 Florins. It's great. The ambiance is fantastic, the locals chatty and open for conversation if you reach out. Just don't couple blocks south east from Fermin's is a small Columbian food diner kind of thing. Delicious arepas con queso. Had some chicharrón there that was as authentic as it gets. From there, I'd stress being brave and trying the food trucks. They mostly open after dark (I imagine because being inside one of those in the day would cook you), and there are dozens on every route. Since the water on the island is pristine (by the way, the water is pristine!) we didn't worry about getting sick, and we didn't. We tried some Dutch pancakes for what felt like was a dime, more Columbian food, some of the "snack" places (essentially you pick a filling and they put it in a hot dog bun), and some delicious burgers. I couldn't even tell you where these places were since we just drove by them and pulled over when we were hungry. But they're great! At these trucks we were paying 20-40 florins a meal for two people rather than 80-120 (or 140 at Wacky Wahoos. Ouch).
Be brave and you'll be rewarded.
Tip seven: Shopping
Much the same thing applies to shopping. Now, I'm no shopper; that's my partners deal. But we did the High Rise mall area and found all the usual high-end brands: Pandora and a thousand other jewelers, Calvin K., whatever. And downtown at the "fashion capitol of the carribbean" we found Gucci and Mango and all the European brands. Whatever. The prices weren't any better than back home, so we were left asking "why?"
Well, then we started going into other stores we found kicking around a little outside these zones. The most rewarding one (at least for her)? DShop. Good prices (slightly cheaper than home) and lots of variety with good quality and unique styles.
Feel free to explore the local stores rather than just stampeding the big brands. Aruba's government has done a lot to encourage the local fashion industry, and it seems to be paying off. You can buy Prada back home.
Random dump of tips!
The rest of my tips don't have enough substance to equate to a whole section, so I'll just dump them here.
Tip the bag boys/girls at the supermarkets. Chances are they don't have a wage and only make money based on tips. If you're gonna buy cherry tomatoes at Super Food, don't put them in a bag; they have designated plastic cups for those. Whatever produce you do get there, take it to a weigh station which will print a ticket with the price for you. Cereal is absurdly expensive at Superfood, as is milk and butter. The Cherry Limeade at Save Lots is delicious! We did not love Baby Beach by any strech of the imagination. In fact, most of the South East side of the island felt like it was all the rage once upon a time, and then it was overshadowed by the North West; many abandoned businesses and homes down there, but I wouldn't make a whole day of it. Interesting to see and worth just driving around. Bring water shoes. Especially if you're going to walk out to the shipwreck because there's some coral that stings out there. For Canadians, it cheaper to pay for stuff in Florins than USD. It is easy to get cash, especially if you bank with RBC or CIBC, as they have branches in Aruba! Buy lots of sunscreen. The aloe museum is very accessible and worth the trip. I preferred the beer Chill to the staple Balashi. Sunday and especially Monday, everything seems to be closed for most of the day. English is the lingua franca pretty well all over the toursit zones, as expected. But outside of that, while Enlgish is still very present, we found Spanish more useful. So, if you know Spanish then great!
Oh, and Aruba is great! Enjoy.‎

Let's talk lore.

Hi, everybody, Ed here.
Here on RSP, we've got an extensive and complex canon going on which all of the characters fit into. But one of the things that keeps coming up - and is subsequently never addressed - is lore.
I'm not going to lie to you: the established lore is immense. With so many new people joining in, I'm worried that such extensive backstory might scare new folks away. We don't want that.
So this post is dedicated to the lore of this subreddit, and hopefully, can become a complete compendium of the important and relevant information concerning our characters and the locations they come from.
I'm going to post the lore concerning my characters as an example. If you have anything to add, post it in the comments below, and I'll add it up here.
Remember: This is established lore. Try to avoid posting things that you are planning on doing; focus on things that have already been talked about, even if they've only been mentioned once.
Also, try to avoid including characters in your lore. We have your characters' info as per their original post introducing them. We don't need more info on them, just on the world that they inhabit.
With all that said, let's get started.

Species

Race Description
Guardians A species of transcendent beings from the fringes of reality, the Guardians do not protect the various species of the universe; rather, they are defenders of entropy. They have the unique ability to see the threads of chaos that weave through the universe, and whenever something threatens entropy's place in events, they are charged with correcting it. (For example, they are responsible for keeping demigods out of human wars.)
Shadows The Shadows were the antithesis of the Guardians. They were a violent race, which turned its attention to Earth a hundred years ago. They were defeated by Earth's heroes, completely wiped out in the wake of the battle.
Sylphs The Sylphs are, for all intents and purposes, a dead species. They were a fairy-like people, invisible to almost everyone; they were unseeable by anyone that they did not explicitly trust. They were powerful warriors, but were wiped out by an unnamed enemy.
von Reichert Vampires Circe von Reichert's family has grown into a respectable sovereign nation. Her children are fast, strong, and well-educated by Circe herself. They do not share in Circe's unique special abilities, but they have inherited her resistance to sunlight, and are only slightly weakened when outside during the day.
Sangron's Vampires Count Sangron has been creating a large family inside the Baltic Empire over the past century. The power of the vampires depends on what generation they are. The weaknesses they possess also depend on the generation. First gen vampires are only weak to decapitation and holy weapons. Second gen vampires are much more vulnerable to holy weapons, and also are weak to silver. Third gen vampires are weakened when in strong sunlight, but not harmed. Fourth gen vampires are badly hurt by sunlight, and can die from extended exposure. Fifth generation and beyond are vulnerable to all typical vampire weaknesses. First Generation Vampires are not converted through biting, but converted through magic like Sangron did to himself.
The Senshi The Senshi are a race of protector spirits with power levels ranging from just above human to those of gods. They are lead by Kami no Senshi, the being created by Maximum Monkey to defend the universe. An fierce sense of loyalty is common for Senshi.
The Twilight Little is known about the Twilight. Is it a power source or is it a race? Seen only in a single family line on earth, the only living Twilight, or user of Twilight, depending on which theory you believe, is Elektra Hart.
The Chosen The Chosen are a race indistinguishable from humans save for their control over what seems to be some form of magic. Their powers come from the universe choosing them at random from a pool of every sapient organism on earth. The Chosen have no particular consistencies, but may exhibit differing eye or hair colours from regular humans.
Kyslers A race of humans that have complete control over crystal. Rarely do children of this race have strong powers but if they do the amount of power they can attain is endless. Their abilities extend beyond crystals and they have been known to train people to use the energy of the cosmos.

Groups

Organization Description
Refuge Originally founded by Clarence "Fat-Cat" McGaw, the group was intended to be a safe haven for supers who did not want to take a side in the battle between good vs evil. The group was handed to Dr.Jackson Dark, a geneticist who had worked with McGaw in the past. Dark became paranoid that the supers within Refuge would eventually overpower him, so he had them all killed and amalgamated their DNA in his own projects. Refuge faded into obscurity, and was recently revived by Dark's great-great-grandson, Teri Tucker.
Warlords A group for supers who are of the more direct approach to getting to their goals. Often seen as villains, they aim to change the world in a different fashion than most. It is Led by Mercia, who is a strict, but fair leader.
Felix Industries Another organization that can be attributed to Fat-Cat, Felix Industries has been the leading weapons and technology developer since its inception. Fat-Cat originally started in the business of theme parks, focusing primarily on his signature park, KiddieKat Land. Felix Industries only grew from there, and now has extensive weapons systems and a complex teleport grid that spans both Earth and Mars.
GenCorp A company that remained completely underground until just recently, they were focused solely on the creation and enhancement of metahumans. They were shut down after the SupeHuman War.
Adeptus Astartes This group is the collective name for the Martian police force. The most famous of the group is the Grey Knights, who is a group of diligent psykers, aiming to keep the peace in the most effect way possible. One of he less known branches is the Iron hands, who are actually all failed Psykers, choosing instead to specialize in siege warfare and artillery work. An off hand note is, that in secret, even from Siegfried, this group is a fanatical cult, worshiping St.George as their god, seeing his strength as nothing but divine power in motion.
Lucky Frog Inc. Luck Frog Inc. started as a chain of casinos until Eruka began investing into other industries like food and entertainment, allowing her to open chains of things like grocery stores and theatres. She incorporated these into the SRZ.
Neo-Protectors The Neo-Protectors are a group founded by Shizen no Senshi as the successor group to the Terra Protectors. They are dedicated to defending the planet earth from any sort of superhuman threat. It is currently lead by Yas and Shizen.
The Bloodletter's After the super, Hikaru announced his goal to unify supers and humans, the organization The Bloodletter's revealed themselves. Believing that supers were above humans, they began several terrorist acts, including attacking the White House and destroying the Vatican. After the original leader Charles Haywood, committed suicide, his second in command Furnace took the lead. Now they are building strength waiting for a weak moment to strike.
CAN🍁CO Often jokingly referred to as Ras-Cran-Co, CAN🍁CO is a major beverage company based out of Vancouver, BC, that bought out PepsiCO in the 2070s, offering a wide range of cool, refreshing beverages.
The Fang Animal-people rights activist group with....extreme methods. No large scale operations yet, but riots and violent protests are common. Run by three generals and their pet Dragon-squid.

Locations

Place Location and Description
Refuge Sanctuary Nevada - The Refuge Sanctuary is a massive underground facility, hidden under one of GenCorp's larger laboratories. The Sanctuary had thousands of defenses mechanisms when it was first built, but time has left many of those systems unusable. The Sanctuary will still repair itself if damaged, and will lock out anyone who might register as hostile to the people within.
von Reichert Manor Toronto, Canada - A bit outside of Toronto is a massive, beautiful stone manor. Within are over 200 vampires, all of them children of Circe von Reichert. They are a peaceful, content people, and the manor they live in is recognized as its own sovereign nation.
Felix Industries Main Office Seattle, WA - The Felix Industries main office building is an open forum, and people are free to come and go as they please. Felix Industries is always happy to answer the public's questions and concerns with absolute disclosure, even concerning their most lucrative projects.
Mars Terraformed and established by St.George in 2014 with the help of Felix Industrial. In the Year 2114 Siegfried the son of St.George is king. Siegfried changes the form of government, by dividing the planet up into city-states, and instituting a democracy. Mars is a predominantly agricultural based society, with few major cities. A few of those cities are: Persepolis, Apollos, and Pandora City.
Pandora City A large city, were the immigrants from New Rome went when in 2014 when New Rome was nearly destroyed by Nidhoggr. It in turn was destroyed by the beast in 2072.
Persepolis The Crown Jewel of Mars, this shining city is a grand marble metropolis. It is a shining light into the darkness.
Apollos Apollos is a poorer city, riddled with petty crime and thievery. It is home to many minor criminal supers, who use their powers for business rather than for violence.
Muspelheim Muspelheim is ruled by Surtr, and it annexed Hell after his conquest of it. Surtr directly rules over Muspelheim itself, hell is broken up into circles based on punishment and also into different societal classes.
Super Reconstruction Zone Mars - The reconstruction zone is a massive city-state that is surrounded by a large wall, more like a gated community. Here supers can live free and easy, supported by the lucky frog brand products Eruka has sponsored. The SRZ also has the emergency 'nullifier' as secret piece of tech designed to suppress the powers of supers inside the zone should something horrible occur. It is a secret and is not easy to operate nor does Eruka wish to use it.
Xavier Estate Located just south of Ottawa, Canada, the Xavier Estate is a very large stretch of private property just off the Mississippi River (the Canadian one, off of the Ottawa River) owned by the wealthy Xavier family and the location of their main family residence, a rather large and beautiful mansion. The Xavier Estate, as a legal entity, has recently inherited/assimilated the estate of Sir Reginald White based in York, England, in a quiet deal behind closed door, and has of late been taking a large interest in events pertaining to the magical and occult (of which the White estate has long been involved with.)
The Neo-Tower Tokyo, Japan - The Neo Tower is the home base of the Neo-Protectors, a massive tower holding training grounds, living spaces, and all other sorts of things
The Lust Kingdom Muspelheim - A sub-location of Muspelheim, the Lust Kingdom is a land where carnal desire reigns supreme, commanded by the Queen of Lust, Lilith ul-Ba'al.
The Chair Center of the Universe - The Chair is the single most comfortable piece of furniture ever created. It is the chair that Kami sits on, watching the entire universe all at once, ready to defend it at any time

[TDIH] April 8th

Quote of the Day
All the stores will open up if you say the magic words. The magic words are: Up against the wall motherfucker, this is a stick up!
— Amiri Baraka, "Black People!"
Word of the Day
Motherfucker — An epithet recalling slave days. If you were a slave, it was likely that the master was sexually assaulting your mother on a regular basis. To call someone in power a motherfucker is to cast light on the genealogical ties that connect those who currently hold power with the brutal history upon which this society was built.
Such a charged word insinuates itself into every context; it becomes an intensifier that can modify anything. Thus many foes of the powerful have become known as bad motherfuckers—including the Motherfuckers, short for Up Against the Wall Motherfuckers, the self-professed "street gang with analysis" that sought to push the counterculture of New York City towards armed insurrection at the end of the 1960s.
563 [BC] — Gautama Siddharta The Buddha. He lives.
1341 — Petrarch crowned poet laureate, steps of capital in Rome.
1614 — Death of Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as "El Greco," painter.
1695 — Johann Christian Gunther lives. Briefly studied medicine at Wittenberg; then, disinherited by his father in 1719, who opposed his poetical ambitions, he will compose his greatest work, Leonorenlieder, a confessional poem in which he pleads to his father for mercy.
1712 — US: New York City slave revolt suppressed, 21 are executed.
1798 — Ramón de la Sagra y Periz, anarchist, lives (1798-1871).
1819 — Walter Scott begins dictating The Bride of Lammermoor as gallstones make the act of writing impossible.
1826 — US: Secretary of State Henry Clay & Senator John Randolph, who accused Clay of striking a "corrupt bargain" to steal the 1824 Presidential election from Andrew Jackson, fight a duel in Virginia. Like most politicians, they both missed.
1864 — US: 13th Amendment passes, abolishing slavery. Does not include wage slavery.
1871 — Robert Louis Stevenson, 21, walks with his father & tells him he is abandoning a career in engineering for writing.
1872 — US: Colville Indian reservation created east of Columbia River; after white farmers pressure the government, a second reservation, on less arable land, is designated instead.
1873 — Merdre! Merdre! Alfred Jarry lives. French poet, novelist, playwright, freelance scoundrel & author of Ubu Roi, a forerunner of the Theatre of Absurd. Among other accomplishments, was Pablo Picasso's weapon supplier (Picasso used the pistol to shoo away bores) & making his mark on 'Pataphysics' (the acceptance of every event in the universe as an extraordinary event). Died of alcoholism & tuberculosis.

Stricken with diabetes in 1955, its complications brought about blindness in 1978 & leg amputations, but John continued to write by dictation.
The key figure in Fante's resurrection was novelist/poet Charles Bukowski, who discovered one of his books in the public library while "starving & drinking & trying to be a writer," & who subsequently described Fante as his "god."
By the late 1970s Bukowski was an international success & in a position to urge his publishers, Black Sparrow Press, to reissue Ask the Dust, "the finest novel written in all time."
Despite his near invisibility, Fante still maintains a strong cult following. He remains a favorite of readers who enjoy bohemian urban fiction in the vein of Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, & Knut Hamsun.

The decision overturns a Denver district judge who ordered Tattered Cover Book Store owner Joyce Meskis to tell police who purchased two books on drug manufacturing from her store.
