Greetings,
In anticipation for the 1 year anniversary of 该水流有其言力. I wanted to do a write up to expound the meanings and concepts behind this release. They say you spend your entire life crafting your first album, and I defiantly thought long and hard about what I wanted this album to truly convey.
To put it simply, this was a breakup album. Making the album was very cathartic for me. I parted ways with my significant other after four years and I was in a very hopeless place. I felt like I was in hell, yet I was still living life. I was listening to this singer song writer, Cassandra Jenkins, who had this song that had the lyrics that followed:

"Clear is the color of hell"

I resonated with that quote. I often found myself by the pier in lower Manhattan, watching the waters and taking in the beauty of the sky line. I often thought to myself of this quote, with every heavy dark feeling I carried post break up. I took the quote quite literally, in thinking to myself, about what we don’t see. The colors we can’t see. The evils we don’t see. The truth of how existence is truly suffering. I thought about how we exist in a sea of clear oxygen. How dependent we are of it. It’s what keeps us alive, yet it also keeps us in this hell. I thought about the water more and more by the pier. Of how its sort of an escape. An escape from the oxygen, an escape from reality, an escape from hell. The more and more I thought about it. If I ended my life here, where would I really be going? I surely wouldn’t being going to heaven. I would find myself back where I started. In hell we all can’t see.
Moving on to my album. The album starts with a sample from the movie James Bond Casino Royale, Where James's Girlfriend dies underwater. I felt that this great change in my life was like a quick plunge into water. I felt like the sea was taking me where I didn't want to go and taking people I cared about away from me. I wanted to convey the loss of control in my life, yet also stage a dramatic loss. Vesper, James Bond's girl was taken from him, in a similar way. The song title was named after Vesper, James's Girl but not her name explicitly but the recipe on how to serve the alcoholic cocktail, shes named after: "基那戈登绝对". Translating to "Kina Gordon Absolute":

Kina - Kina Lillet Fortified Wine
Gordon - Gordon Gin
Absolute - Absolute Vodka

Alcohol has played a big factor in the ultimate downfall of my relationship, so I thought the title was fitting, on top of just the James Bond sample.
After that the next song moves on to, me finding myself in this world without my loved one. The same world but a world alone, Hell if you will. The theme is very gothic, being that it purpose is to project a sense of mystery and heartache. The song is named: "地下水路" Translated to "Underground Waterway", referencing Hell, again.
Afterwards, the song "华尔兹苍白的眼睛" was the used to represent the idea of looking back. Vaporwave always made me feel a false sense of idealistic nostalgia, and this is the song I tried to create out of that. The pain of looking back is seeing all you once hand. When I listen to this song I see myself in joy hand in hand with my past lover in a waltz, with elegance. The song name Translated is "Our Waltz Pale Eyes", because of it. Its the joy I feel in remembering, what I once had while I was young, ignorant with pale eyes, referencing my darker eyes I have today.
Both "地下水路" and "华尔兹苍白的眼睛" were sampled from the video game Castlevannia Symphony of the Night.
The next song gets a little personal. On the first date with my past lover, one of the things we discussed was our goals in life, a bucket list if you will. It happened July 7, 2011. It was a date I'll never forget. Every year since then we would have a night out and discussing how far we got on our list and see if we wanted to add anything. July 7, 2016, I found myself in Saint Patrick's Cathedral alone. I recorded the ambient noise around me as I made my new list of goals. The recording is unaltered. Its named "帕特里克(新七/七)", translated to "Patrick (New Seven / Seven)".
The next track is another song looking back, not so much at the beauty in my past but looking at the beauty in hell, and sort of evoking the feeling of:

"Hell is what you make of it"

The song is named "斯威尼银翼" translated to "Sweeney Silverwing" referencing the musical Sweeny Todd and the “The Wind Wings” by Goldmund (The song sampled).
In Sweeny todd the song "No Place Like London" The lyrics go:

There was a barber and his wife and she was beautiful... a foolish barber and his wife. She was his reason and his life... and she was beautiful, and she was virtuous And he was naive.
There was another man who saw that she was beautiful... A pious vulture of the law who, with a gesture of his claw removed the barber from his plate! Then there was nothing but to wait! And she would fall! So soft! So young! So lost and oh so beautiful!
Oh, that was many years ago. I doubt if anyone would know...

I resonated with this. Going back to "Hell is what you make of it", I felt that Todd failed to find his own way of dealing with himself in his home he now sees as hell. He only then realizes his errors when his kills his wife at the end. I didn't want to become like Todd and this song was a reminder that I shouldn't become someone so damaged to the point I hurt other people. Referencing another quote I really like:

"Hurt People, Hurt People"

The next song "雨林 碧玉" Translates to Rainforest Jasper. It was a stone given to me by my sibling, in hopes of giving me strength to move on. It's the first sign of light in this album and Its a reminder that I'm not alone in this hell I believe I'm in. There people around me that care for me and I should feel grateful for that. The Sample used was from Assassins Creed II the video game. The opening scene in the game starts with Ezio and his older brother looking out into the skyline of Florance Italy. There was a small exchange of words before the title of the game appears:

Federico: "It is a good life we live, brother"
Ezio: "The best, May It never change"
Federico: "And may It never change us"

I felt that the beauty of their family relationship, the beauty in the music and the beauty in the scenery capture how I felt. After this song I felt that I accepted my reality in this hell. I felt that I just needed to moved on in life. I used this sample as a reminder of not only my connection to my family but a remarkable moment of excellence of how good Assassins Creed II was.
The last two songs come in a pair. "它为五在早晨 . . ." and "一旦之前，总是". Translate directly to "It is five in the morning ..." and "Once before, always". The First song has a spoken word bit. I speak Mandarin, and its simply a letter I've written to my past lover, heavily based on a draft I written for her on our 2nd anniversary, the only letter I ever wrote that made my significant other cry haha. The mood is very dramatic, and the feeling I wanted to evoke was that I've moved on and I was grateful that I was able to share this relationship and that I've grown so much from it.
Going on to the meaning of the song names, its a lyric from one of my favorite albums Sunbather by Deafheaven, another master piece. The title track has a lyric that goes:

"It's 5 A.M...and my heart flourishes at each passing moment. Always and forever."

The Sample used for this 2 part song was a version of Dearly Beloved from the Kingdom Hearts Series.
Last, the name of the album 该水流有其言力 translating to "The Water Has Its Own Words" is a simple reference to the song The Great Below by Nine Inch Nails from the album The Fragile Theres a lyric that goes:

The currents have their say
The time is drawing near
Washes me away
Makes me disappear
And I descend from grace
In arms of undertow
I will take my place
In the great below

The Album was released September 1, 2016, the date that would have marked five years with my significant other.
The Album art was captured in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Its a picture of a "W" of the neon "Watchtower" sign. Its the most iconic sign that can be seen from southern Manhattan. Going back to the days I would look out on the pier, the Brooklyn skyline at night wouldn't be the same without it. The cover art is a reminded of night, by the water.
Moving on to the physical release, I always loved this quote by Emma Ruth Rundle:

"I knew this was going to be the end of something, an end of a time, and it had to be. I want to explore music as like psychological alchemy... You put these thing into a physical form, so you can contain the somewhere, somewhere outside of myself and that I don't have to live with it anymore. It makes room for other experiences. Its a way for getting closure. For me. You know?"

I wanted to make this a physical release to really drive that same idea. I didn't want to carry these memories anymore. I wanted to attach as much meaning into every single aspect of this album so I can free myself of the emotional weight. This album is very special to me and listening to it really takes me back to darker times.
Being that this release was so special to me I wanted to go above and beyond with the quality and sorta strive for something of Luxury quality.
I delved deep and bought two types of cassettes, unscrewed each one and then reassembled them to have the split color effect. 70$ for the matte black + red leader, then 58$ for the empty transparent red. 4 hours of unscrewing and re screwing for the run of 50.
Spent 88$ on a case of 250 jewel cases, only needed 50 for a cost of 18$
The J-cards were designed to have double sided full color spot gloss printing that demanded a run of 100 prints when I only needed 50. Ran for 85$. They didn't have standard cassette sizes so I had to trim all 4 corners which took 4 hours to do all 100. Each one was then scored to have the perfect fold into the jewel case, which took about another 2 hours. Then the best 50 J cards were picked from the ones cut, and scored, the rest were discarded not meeting the quality I wanted.
I dubbed each tape in real time, with a bonus song for a total of 40 Mins, times 50 is 2000 Mins of dubbing with flipping the Cassette every 20 mins.
All in all it ran me about 231$ with about 43 hours of work excluding the extra cases, design time, tools and of course the amount of time I spent on the music. I even made a little video to demo the quality
Theres a detail of on the back of the J card of written Chinese text in clear gloss that reads "清澈是地狱的色" Translating to "Clear Is The Color of Hell", which has become the mantra of this project.
As much as I would love to have this cassette be out there for everyone, the shipping abroad isn't cheap. Theres not much I can do there, and dropping the price when people have already pre-ordered, would be pandering. I did everything I could do imaginable to justify the price. If anyone reading this thinks its too expensive please don't hesitate to grab the free download.
TL;DR: The first album tells a story of an emotional journey of losing a loved one, finding yourself in a mysterious world without them, painful nostalgia, assessments on mental health, reminders of hope and a heartfelt goodbye to past endearments. The artist is selling a fancy cassette, its was hard to make.

I want to make clear that the cassette and it planning and or manufacturing have no ties to the defunct label. Although its unfortunate to see the label not active anymore, I'm proud to say I'm apart of its historic alumni.
