Thoughts on the evolution of personal fragrance

You guys appreciate this stuff I think. Here's a mental dump I've been mulling over during the weekend.
I remember when I was just out of high school. CK Obsession and Drakkar Noir was the greatest stuff ever. These days it seems like the kids are wearing Aqua de Gio. I can't stand the smell of any of it at all. When I was younger I couldn't stand the smell of the likes of Aqua di Parma, Amaris or Guerlain Vetiver.
Aqua di Parma smelled like asshole uncle to me. Guerlain Vetiver smelled like grandpa. Bay rum smelled like the chatty old farts at the barbershop.
The fragrances of a male age range tend to attract the noses of likewise mature females. I never really liked Tommy but 20 years ago I'd wear it to attract college girls. They all loved it. Now I cant stand that demographic and will gladly wear something repellent to it.
I think that's how a personal fragrance evolves. Not only do our tastes change, but those we want to attract/repel changes as well. Also, who wants to be 40 and smelling like 18. My nose has matured as well, I appreciate things that I didn't before. This goes with everything in life. When I was a kid I wanted cheddar cheese. Now I'd like a good stilton. Everything in its season as well. I didn't know I shouldn't be wearing Tommy on a hot August evening at the opera. (Yes I've always enjoyed the opera)
Wet shaving helped evolve my nose even further lately. Not only do I now appreciate niche fragrances, but I know and understand their base notes and proper season. Wet shaving moved me closer to the deep end of fragrance snobbery, much to my wife's delight.
Fragrances should be interesting. Interesting people are attracted to interesting fragrances as well, I've found. There's nothing interesting about mainstream "high school/college" fragrances, they're just mainstream. Like good music. Who wants to strike up a 30 minute conversation about the latest Nicki Minaj album and her finer, less-appreciated nuances? No thanks. If I'm playing Ege Bamyasi and someone is lured in and starts discussing it I am truly interested in such a person. Those types of people tend to have suggestions on like-minded things and new things to discover.
Dry down is an amazing thing. Now I know why it's silly to buy based on test strips or a quick huff of EdT after it's been on my wrist for 2 minutes. Fragrances should be obtained in samples and tried for 2 days, then tried again months later. A good fragrance might smell like one thing at application, another 30 mins later, another 2 hours later and a completely different animal even 6 hours later. You'd be hard pressed to discover such a thing in a 20 minute session at the Sephora counter. Come to think of it, I think this is a big reason why I strayed away from a lot of niche fragrances, many of them have strong/awful openings and cant begin to be appreciated until an hour or so after application.
I love mixing shave soap / aftershave scents with fragrances as well. I've found that B&M does an excellent job of making soaps across a range of fragrance types. He has florals, orientals, spice, woody, leather - something to go with everything. Not only is it incredible soap, but there's a scent product to pair with just about anything out there to add to the complexity of whatever else you're wearing. I appreciate that. Most people rinse their lather off after shaving, I think its important to leave it on your skin as both a fragrance base and facial moisturizer.
I've learned a few tricks lately too. Samples, buy samples as mentioned before and use them. If you don't like something, revisit it in a different season/time and see again. Testers are great if you don't want to pay full price - you can find tester bottles on EBay for sometimes half the price of a normal bottle of something. Same fragrance, cheaper packaging. Have someone else gauge the sillage of a new fragrance for you. Also, don't ask for opinions - input from unsolicited responses to your fragrance are the most informative.
Many of you already know all of this stuff anyway, but I'm excited to be exploring so much lately. I'm also interested in your input as well.
Some scents that I've either discovered or rediscovered lately that I am enjoying particularly these days:
Guerlain Habit Rouge For me pairs well with B&M Roam
Lalique Encre Noir Pairs well with HeatheVetiveClary Sage
Caron Yatagan (Thanks BostonPhotoTourist) Pairs well for me with B&M Nocturne
Guerlain Vetiver Pairs well with B&M Ferox
Tom Ford Black Orchid Wife wears this lately
Versace Crystal Noir Also for the ladies
Givenchy Pi Seems to pair well for me with Bay Rum soaps
Good stuff. I can't wait to discover more.

Vanilla fragrances for vanilla skeptics

My issue: I like the smell of vanilla, but I don't like pretty much every vanilla-heavy perfume I've ever tried. I don't like gourmands or sweet perfumes. I don't want to smell like a cake, a cookie, berries and cream, or a cuddly little kitten. No offense to anyone who does, but those aren't my vibe. Previously I have just avoided any perfumes that have vanilla as a main note, but lately I'm trying to challenge my preconceptions about which perfumes I do and don't like.
So I got a few samples of some unconventional vanilla perfumes that are not sweet, are not gourmands, and where reviews suggest they show a different side of vanilla. I figured I would share my impressions in case anyone else is in the same boat.
Vanille Insensee by Atelier Cologne
It has a somewhat sharp opening of lime, coriander, and vanilla. The green oakmoss and vetiver comes through quite early, and with the lime makes for a surprisingly green take on vanilla. It stays fairly linear on the dry down, as an interesting combo of vanilla with tangy green notes, although the lime fades in favour of a clean vetiver and coriander. Completely dry, not at all foody. Unisex. Fresh, green, and easy-wearing, it could be a summer vanilla scent.
Vanille Tonka by Nicolai Parfumeur Createur
The opening is slightly playdough-ish tonka and bitter lemon peel, which fairly quickly separates into carnation, black pepper, tobacco, and tonka. It’s quite dry, and more a spicy floral than anything gourmand. There’s a bit of mandarin and the orange blossom, but I don’t consider it a citrus scent either, and after the first 5 minutes it doesn’t have a juicy/sour snap that I think of when I think citrus. The dry down is a spicy black pepper, tonka, and incense, with a bit of a playdough note that reminds me of Guerlain’s L’Heure Bleu and several other Guerlain fragrances. The vanilla doesn’t come to the fore until late in the dry down, when it is dry, very peppery, and smoky. It’s pretty unisex, not at all sweet, and despite the pepper and the vanilla I would not at all call it a gourmand. It's pretty light and lively, somewhat unusual and complex, and suitable for day wear and wearing year round.
Lune Feline by Atelier des Ors
This is a big powerhouse of a scent. Opens full on smoke with a faint whiff of wood, more a campfire than incense. It's sweeter than either of the others, but only lightly sweet and not at all foody, and the sweetness fades over time. It stays smoky, but with stronger woods and balsam as it dries and a tiny bit of cinnamon spice, although it risks dipping into ashtray territory a bit later on once the sweetness fades. I can’t overstate how different it is than Vanille Tonka, which looks similar on paper as a smoky, spicy dry vanilla. Where that one is peppery and lively this one is deep and languid and plush. It reminds me a lot of Kerosene Copper Skies, but centered around vanilla rather than amber, with woods as the main secondary note instead of spice. Surprisingly unisex, but very sexy, this may be too heavy for daytime wear. From my three vanillas-for-vanilla-haters this reminds me the most of a classic vanilla, as although it isn’t a gourmand or at all juvenile it’s still a big plush scent rather than being fresh or clean.

Although I didn't intend to do it, I think I chose a good three to try to get an idea of the range that vanilla has outside of gourmands and cutesy fruit-based perfumes. I basically ended up with a green vanilla, a peppery vanilla, and a smoky vanilla and all of them worked really well. I've already ordered a decant of Lune Feline for my date night perfume. I should note, all three had decent sillage, with Lune Feline having strong sillage, and all three had excellent longevity. I could smell all three on my sweater the next morning without sticking my nose in the fabric, and when I wore the sweater again the next day Vanilla Insensee actually transferred back to my skin.

The Neverending (sampling) Story: 50 and more quick reviews

F28, Switzerland. I might have been obsessed with collecting samples for the last two months? Sooo, inspired by others posts and users, I thought I'd share with you some quick reviews about them! I've also blind bought (BB) a few bottles since last september. I know very little about fragrances, my nose is basically untrained, and English is one of my secondary languages. I hope you'll enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it!

My (31F) baby fragrance collection

Baby fragrance collection
I have just recently started getting into fragrance. After trying about 50-60 samples, these are the bottles I chose!
Joy by Jean Patou - this one is honestly my favorite. I never would have guessed it, because I had in my mind that I didn’t like heavy florals OR more vintage style fragrances. Wrong on both counts :) I get mainly beautiful, floaty Jasmine on my skin, with a subtle woody/musky base that is never too much. (I can get overwhelmed by very heavy musks.) I think it reminds me of a Disney Princess doll I had as a child with perfume in its back. I loved that doll! I have only smelled the modern formulation of Joy so far, but I did order a vintage Eau de Joy as well as one of the little black bottles of extrait. I’m very excited to sniff those and see if I can tell the difference!
Mon Guerlain - lovely, powdery floral. I know it’s lavender and vanilla, but honestly my nose can’t distinguish the notes in this perfume. I feel mature and sophisticated in this scent though, and it also seems very versatile and inoffensive.
Orchidee Vanille by Van Cleef & Arpels - sweet, foody vanilla with a little more depth than many of the other vanilla fragrances I tried. It’s still quite linear, and can be kinda heady (I definitely get some Dr Pepper vibes) but somehow it still feels grounded. And that dry down is MEGA creamy and lasts AGES. I sprayed one spray on the back of my neck the other morning, and I could still smell it on my pillow the NEXT morning.
Hermessence Vetiver Tonka - I wasn’t quite ready to spring for a full bottle of this one ($$) but I got a decant from The Perfumed Court and I do really like this scent. It feels a little more modern than the other fragrances I purchased, maybe due to the clean/earthy veviter opening. It’s quite light for Vetiver though, and steers towards gourmand more than any of the other vetivers I’ve tried. It doesn’t get too sweet; but it’s an incredibly cozy and rich combination. I wasn’t sure how the vetiver and tonka were going to blend, but it’s really lovely. The dry down reminds me a lot of the Orchidee Vanille, very creamy. It doesn’t have quite the staying power though, maybe due to it being an edt.

Here’s all the Byredo fragrances I’ve sampled/ bought decants of in the past month and my thoughts on them.

So I’ve been on a major decant shopping spree recently and have come across some real winners, and some not so much. I started to get into the house of Byredo, added my first Frederic Malle’s, and expanded my Aqua Allegoria lineup.
All of these were purchased either from Surrender to Chance, The Perfumed Court, Fragrance Marketplace on FB.
Byredo:
Bal d’Afrique - nice, well rounded citrus with a hint of a white floral on opening. Vetiver starts to appear in the dry down. This is a happy scent for me. It’s not reinventing the wheel by any means, but I can appreciate what it’s construction and blend. Longevity is average, 4-6 hrs maybe. I don’t think I would buy a full bottle but I’d definitely be interested in a partial.
Bibliotheque - I am really intrigued by this one. It’s slightly sweet and leathery. I can’t say that I have anything that even remotely resembles this fragrance, and I appreciate that about it. Fragrantica says that the top notes are peach and plum. I don’t smell that. What I do smell is very synthetic almost like lip smackers chapstick from the 90’s. Not that I’m knocking it, just I don’t get anything remotely realistic out of this. Not an overpowering scent, maybe 4-5 hrs longevity on me. Would not buy though.
Black Saffron - Realistic Leather and a slight tart fruit undertone upon first spray. This has to be one of my favorites from the lineup. The leather note shines in this and feels much more realistic than in other fragrances with the same note. This is a fragrance that brings to a mind hot, and arid landscape. Longevity is a bit better on this one; 5-8 hours. Would probably buy.
Blanche - this fragrance is the epitome of clean scents. Think of any cotton fragrance or clean sheets candle from bath and body works and you get the idea. Kind of has a windex smell to it. It’s not in any way a bad fragrance, it’s just not my thing. It is just as you’d expect it to be, and with the outside of the box thinking from Byredo, I was a touch disappointed with that. I guess I was hoping for a note out of left field or something. Longevity is average 4-6 hrs. Would not buy.
Gypsy Water - smells strongly of lemon water, with a slight hint of B.O. I think that may be a bit of the juniper coming through on this. Also interestingly enough, reminds me of fruity pebbles a bit on first spray. So much so, I went out and bought a box for nostalgias sake. Don’t get me wrong with the description, I actually very much like this fragrance. It’s an interesting take on citrus. It’s a sunny fragrance that reminds me of being outdoors and eating lemon Italian ice. Longevity is not good on this as is common with a citrus dominated fragrance. Lower end of 4-6 hrs. Would maybe buy a partial of this.
Mister Marvelous - the notes in this perfume should be something really nice but it comes across as average male fragrance to me. Unoriginal I guess. I can say I do like the neroli on the opening. The other notes carrying the weight here are the lavender which is highly muted, and the citrus. This is a sterile barbershop type note which I’m not opposed to. That being said, this fades out QUICKLY! It is a shame to see something that had the building blocks to be good, be forgettable and weak. Longevity, maybe 2-3 hours. Would not buy.
Mojave Ghost - opening, straight pear note. This is the sapodilla that is actually really pretty and I appreciate the uniqueness of this ingredient. The magnolia starts to shine through about 10-20 minutes in. There is a definite soap note to this. Not a clean scent, but a bit soapy. This is not strong by any means and I’m not sure if anyone other than the wearer would notice it. Nothing really offensive or divisive about this fragrance, but that also means it’s kind of boring. Longevity, maybe 4 hours. Will wear the decant I have, but would not buy.
Tobacco Mandarine - this is powerful obviously because it’s an extrait, but it is very linear. Tobacco is at the heart snd the star here. Not tobacco like in tobacco vanille or Herod, this is a sharper, higher pitched note I guess I’d say. Notes say that there is frankincense, but if it is there, it is very muted and I can’t detect it. There is nothing inherently wrong with this fragrance, but for the price, I want more complexity with what I’m getting. If I wanted a dual note fragrance, I’d buy a jo malone for half the price. Longevity 5-8hrs. Would not buy.
Other fragrances that I picked up that I will be reviewing:
Guerlain Pera Granita Coconut fizz Teazzura Spiriteuse Double Vanille
Gucci last day of summer (the alchemists garden)
Balenciaga Florabotanica

My 2020 Purchases, 55 fragrances, with mini reviews, best in class and top lists. WARNING: Very long post.

55 fragrances, a little more than one a week. Ranging from bargain bin to seriously overpriced niche.
Some real gems and a few duds. Links to Fragrantica for each fragrance. Here goes:
27 87 - Genetic Bliss: Similar to Eccentric Molecules, but more refined, great depth and great longevity. Perfect for layering. A worthy purchase.
Abel - Cobalt Amber: A rather boring, middle of the road amber. Blind bought. Similar in style to MFK - Grand Soir, but lacks the complexity.
Acqua di Parma - Colonia Pura(x2): An incredible citrus with aldehydes, making it etheral and eternally lasting. A must have. Perfectly unisex. Rivals Mancera´s Lemon Line for longest lasting summer scent.
Acqua di Parma - Colonia Assoluta: Rumours of discontinuation. Very similar to Colonia but amped up. A better purchase than the original.
Acqua di Parma - Colonia Sandalo: A beautiful, light and dry sandal wood with citrus. Good longevity. Highly recommended.
Aether - Hypær: The company that tries hard to be different for the sake of being different. I do admire their blatant embrace of Aroma Chemicals. This one is their best offering.
Aramis - Aramis: A classic, still good and long lasting in its current formulation. A must have in any collection. Was the first fragrance I ever bought for my own money. Nostalgic value for me is through the roof.
Armaf - Club de Nuit Milestone: A beautiful floral take on MI or Individuelle. On its own, it stands out as a great bargain purchase. Inoffensive, easy to wear and very versatile. As with most Armafs, it strikes a great balance, between quality and price.
Art de Parfum - Gin & Tonic: A beautiful juniper. one of, if not the best juniper accord I have come across. If juniper is a favourite of yours, you owe it to yourself to sample this one.
Art de Parfum - Sea Foam: A beautiful aquatic with a fig element. among the more interesting aquatics I have come across recently.
Comme de Garcons - Blue Encens: A pretty, light and easy to wear incense, for people who do not want the churcy kind of incense. A blueish twist moves it towards modern male perfumery. It is good, but I will not get it again.
Comme de Garcons - Radish Vetiver: This one I regret. I cannot get past the metallic radish, in the incredibly persistent opening. It last for hours. After it moves into the late middle and early dry down, it reveals a fantastic multifacetted vetiver, that I wish they had embraced but itself, without the radish.
Comme de Garcons - Series 4 Cologne Vettiveru: An old school, slightly dirty middle of the road vetiver. Not really a standout among vetiver centric scents, but if you can find it cheap, like I did, it is perfectly wearable.
Creed - Asian Green Tea: An interesting Creed! Almost aquatic. Tea is not the main player here. It is distinctly floral and amber on my skin. I like it a lot.
Creed - Aventus: Still not worth the price. Doesn´t matter if it´s smoky or fruity. Its good, sure, but costs about 50% too much. Floris - 1976 outshines Aventus on any given day.
Etat Libre D´Orange - Cologne: A beautiful classic italian style cologne. Can be found fairly cheap. Is a great representation of the cologne style. Think Acqua di Parma. Recommended.
Extrait d´Atelier - Maitre Ceramiste: One of my favorite brands, I have all of their offerings. THey alway have something interesting, in this case, a concrete or ceramic accord that is both unique interesting and beautiful. I strongly recommed seeking these Extrait d´Atelier offerings out.
Floris - Neroli Voyage: The best aquatic since the 90´s period. Beautiful very long lasting neroli, that sweeps you up and carries you on clouds of heavenly scented bliss for 8+ hours. A MUST HAVE!
Floris - Cefiro: A strikingly beautiful woody aromatic, with a playful Jasmine that intertwines with beautiful sandalwood. A fresh sweet citric opening rounds of, what may be the best all round offering from Floris. Some men might find the jasmine a little too dominant, but I adore it. On a woman this would be sexy sophistication, a touch of clas and playfulness, all rolled into one.
Floris - Chypress: As with all offerings from Floris, this is pure quality, but it doesnt shine as bright as Cefiro. I like it and I will enjoy wearing it, but I wont be purchasing it again. A Chypre twist with ylang ylang making it white floral forward. Brings back memories of classy traditional perfumery geared towards women.
Francesca Bianchi - Cuir Soyeux (Limited Edition). No longer available: For those familiar with Francesca´s offerings, this one needs no introdcution. She creates multifaceted, heavy, sexual, naughty and nasty (all in a good way)perfumes that lasts a life time. This is her take on leather. I am not big on leather scents but this one is a stunner. Maybe because the leather accord only play a prominent supporting role instead of being the center accord.
Gallivant - London: Gallivant is fast becoming a favorite house of mine, but so far this is the only bottle I have gotten. Cucumber and rose are at the forefront with a leather accord supporting throughout. The cucumber accord is beatiful. Worth the price for that alone. Its a polarising scent profile i would say, so I recommend sampling (which you always should)
Gamine - Oceanic Encre: This one was a suprise. An aquatic with a dominant algae accord. Typical Neroli opening leads to algae and coconut. It reminds of a warm summers day on a northern european beach. It is way too expensive for what it is, and the longevity could be better. That being said, it is a fairly unique aquatic.
Guerlain - Terracotta: a classic, purchased for my wife. It is sophisticated, sexy summer in a bottle. God I love this stuff. If you can find a vintage, get it immdediately.
Histoire de Parfums - 1740 Marquis de Sade: HdP is another one of my favourite houses. They never disappoint. A beautiful immortelle carries the scent throughout its life span. Artemisia provides an interesting if fleeting opening. Worth a bottle for reference.
Histoire de Parfums - 1899 Hemmingway: Unlike 1740, this one is a love for me. A beautiful juniper, cinnamon and amber concoction. Never heavy and never fleeting. persistent and enveloping. Another must have in my opinion.
Jardins d´Ecrivains - Ajar: A beautiful fantasy orchid. Sweet and hypnotising. a scent for when you cozy up with a blanket and want to be selfindulgent.
Jeanne en Provence - Acqua: A bargain bin aquatic that punches well above its weight. Traditional 90´s style aquatic with good longevity. An archetypical dumb reach. For anyone on a budget wanting an exptremely cheap aquatic, it doesnt get better than this.
Kelsey Berwin - Dinar: Blind buy. Woody and musky and waaaaaay too sweet. Not my cup of tea. Smells cheap.
Lalique - Encre Noire Sport: Of all the EN offerings this is my favorite. Lalique´s offerings are never bad and never dull. The vetiver in this line is an aquired taste. If you are familiar with Northern European pine forests, it smells like they do, on days you dont want to spend time in said forest. The sport version takes some steps to remove it from that association, making me appreciate the vetiver on offering that much more.
Le Couvent Maison de Parfum - Aqua Nymphae: Jean-Claude Ellena does Le Jardin de Monsieur Li Hermès once again, but in a slightly different way. Its very good and cheap.
Le Couvent Maison de Parfum - Aqua minimes: Jean-Claude Ellena does calssic cologne and does it well. Its very good and cheap.
Le Couvent Maison de Parfum - Aqua Solis: Jean-Claude Ellena does Un Jardin En Mediterranee once again, but in a slightly different way. Its very good and cheap.
Le Liquides Imaginaires - Phantasma: A lovely yusu and rice on a bed of green tea combination that gives a distinct Japanese feel to this frangrance. It is very, very good, but you have to really like these accords to justify the price.
L´Orchestre Parfum - Piano Santal: A luscious, deep and enthralling sandalwood frangrance on a bed of milk and cashmere wool, that rivals the opposition. Some has compared this to Santal 33, but I find this to be a more realistic interpretation of sandalwood.
L´Orchestre Parfum - Incens Asakusa: Incense and Iris. Unique. May just be one of teh best incense accords I have come across.
L´Orchestre Parfum - The Darbouka: Spicy immortelle. The weakest of the three I got from this house. I will not buy it again. That being said, L´Orchestre Parfum is a young house that is well worth checking out. Reasonably priced, very high quality fragrances.
Le Bains Guerbois - 2015 LE PHÉNIX: Woody, dry incense. I find it hard to classify this and objectively describe it. Definitely not a love. Still trying to figure out if I like it. Only got a decant as its rather pricey. right now, I will not invest in a full bottle.
Mercedes Benz - Infinitely Spicy: Found it in TK Maxx for pennies. It´s fine but the price reflects what you are getting.
Mercedes Benz - Addictive Oriental: Found it in TK Maxx for pennies. Much better than IS. Luckily the cashmere wood is not too dominant. I think this makes a good purchase for those on a budget.
Nicolai Parfumeur Createur - New York Intense: If you are curious about high class fougeres, but have less than 100 quid to spend, this is the one to get. If you have more, Rogue Perfumery´s offerings outshines NYI in every aspect.
Perfume Sucks - Black: I am not an oud conniseur in any way, however, this one gets it right. Oud plays a part in an orchestra of accomplished players. think BR540 (without the sweetness) with oud, patchouli and incense, without any of the accords, being dominant.
Rasasi - Oudh al Misk: Summer on a budget. It is fine, for the price its even good. I wont be wearing it much, but was curious about the hype. Again, if you are strapped for cash, this makes a brilliant summer purchase.
Rituals - Eau de Tsuru: Rituals tried their hand at a BR540 alternative, and does a pretty good job. Only got the travel size for the sake of keeping my Rituals collection complete. It is likable but nothing unique.
Rituals - Nuit d´Azar: This is the real star from Rituals. Hands down the best vetiver I have smelled this year. Long lasting, complex and utterly divine.
Rogue Perfumery - Fougere L´Aube: A magical perfume wonder. A scent adventure that takes you on an everlasting journey. If you can only afford one fragrance and you want that to be a fougere, this is the one to get. Ignore Fragrantica and its comparisons. The closest scent to this one is Mousse Illuminee. Fougere L´Aube is lighter, slightly more playful and etherical. Easier to wear, and easier on the nose for those who weren´t around to smell fougeres as they used to be.
Rogue Perfumery - Mousse Illuminee: An absolutel stunner of a fragrance. every bit as good as Fougere L´Aube, bt a little more classic fougere. For some harder to wear or less flexible. The dimensions to the moss in this fragrance are in my experience unrivalled in modern perfumery, except for Rogue´s other oakmoss offerings.
Roos & Roos - Sympathy for the Sun: Salty powdered flowers. Not my cup of tea. Gave it to the missus.
Scent of Finland - Kaltio: Aldehydic aquatic. Perfectly unisex or rather asexual. A scent for those that doesnt want to smell like perfume. Being Scandinavian, I was interested in their offerings. Will not geti it again.
Tabac - Original EDT: My fathers scent of choice for many years. Bought to rekindle my memories from childhood. I made the imstake of getting the EDT instead of the after shave. The EDT is not a boosted version of the AS but rahter has added aldehydes and florals, which makes too great a change to the original scent in my opinion.
Une Nuit Nomade - Memory Hotel: A pretty, safe chypre inspired fragrance, that wont rock your world or throw you off the ship. They do conveniently sized 25ml bottles for long term testing. Not a hit with me.
Une Nuit Nomade - Bohemian Soul: A somewhat better offering, but once again, I find it a little uninspired and safe. No attempt at making it unique and no resemblance of a DNA accord in their line.
Zara - Montsouris: BR540 clone attempt. Somewhat successful. It is ok, only.
Zara - Place Dauphine: Salty ambergris in the style of Zara (so too sweet), on a very tight budget. It is passable, but I wont be using out except for at home or as a room fragrance.

Women’s perfume reviews (from a novice)

Philosykos by Diptyque
The description says it smells like the essence of a fig tree from ground to fruit. I get mostly Creamy vanilla green leaves. It doesn’t have great silliage or lasting power but it smells really good. Springtime comfort. 9/10
Top notes are Fig Leaf and Fig; middle notes are Green Notes and Coconut; base notes are Fig Tree, Woody Notes and Cedar
Premiere Figuier By L’Artisan
Also a fig based perfume. This one feels more unisex to me than Philosykos. Definitely stronger. It has a foggy, green, clean soap feeling. Springtime rainy day. 7/10
Top notes are Fig Leaf and Asafoetida; middle notes are Fig, Sandalwood and Almond Milk; base notes are Coconut, Sandalwood, Dried Fruits and Lime
Lost Cherry by Tom Ford
Cherries, vanilla and booze. Reminds me of a ludens cough drop. I love this perfume. It lasts all day and just makes me so happy. 10/10
Top notes are Sour Cherry, Bitter Almond and Liquor; middle notes are Sour Cherry, Plum, Turkish Rose and Jasmine Sambac; base notes are Tonka Bean, Vanilla, Peru Balsam, Benzoin, Cinnamon, Sandalwood, Cedar, Cloves, Vetiver and Patchouli
Eau Duelle by Diptyque
Vanilla, incense, dryness. I like this one for winter days. I don’t love it but I do like it. It reminds me of Burberry Brit. Brit is creamier. I give this 6/10
Cardamom, Asian cyprus, elemi, juniper, saffron, calamus, black tea, black African olibanum, amber, Firnat Vanilla, Bourbon Vanilla, white musk
Gourmand Coquin by Guerlain
Everything wonderful that a perfume could be is in this bottle. Chocolate, vanilla, booze, incense. It smells so expensive (and it is - I got a decant or 3). Comforting winter scent. Lasts all day. 10/10
Top notes: black pepper. Heart notes: rose, smoky tea. Base notes: rum, chocolate
French Kiss by Guerlain
Roses and raspberries and old ladies. I just kinda hate it. I don’t know what note exactly is so prominent, I think it’s the rose. Just bad to me. 2/10 bc it still smells high quality
Top notes are Raspberry and Litchi; middle notes are Violet and Rose; base notes are Heliotrope, Vanilla, Orris Root and White Musk
Angelique Noire by Guerlain
Sweet. Kinda like a grown up woman’s version of cotton candy but a little more blue than pink. I like it but I wouldn’t buy a full size 6/10
Top notes are Angelica, Pear and Pink Pepper; middle notes are Jasmine and Caraway; base notes are Vanilla, Angelica and Cedar
Dzing by L’Artisan
Oh god this was bad. Light brown hay and caramel that dries down to a mostly clean pig stall at the fair with some caramel near by. 2/10 for being interesting but I cannot wear this.
Notes: tonka beans, balsam, saffran and ginger
Fou D’Absinthe by L’Artisan
Smells like an old man in the forest on a hazy night. 1/10
Top notes are Wormwood, Angelica and Black Currant; middle notes are Star Anise, Nutmeg, Cloves, Ginger, Pepper and Patchouli; base notes are Pine Tree Needles, Balsam Fir and Incense
Tea for Two by L’Artisan
Spicy chai tea. Not a heavy type of spicy. If spring time had a spicy scent this would be it 6/10
Top notes are Tea, Star Anise and Bergamot; middle notes are Cinnamon, Spices, Ginger and Gingerbread; base notes are Tobacco, Honey, Leather and Vanilla

[31m] My Fragrance Collection - where to go next?

Where should I go next???
submitted by dude_on_the_net to fragrance [link] [comments]

Guess who's back with more commentary! (24F)

the goods

Hey everyone, happy new year! I'm back again with an updated collection and, surprise, more commentary! Peep my older post here. Warning: Wall of text ahead

Since my last post, the growth of my collection has very rapidly escalated. Oh how things have changed! I'd like to announce that I no longer wish to smell like Red Tobacco and much prefer Chloé. I suppose my tastes have become a bit more mainstream. Recently, I've embraced femininity in fragrances and many masculine, even unisex perfumes don't tickle my pickle anymore. That's right, leather, tobacco, vetiver and peppery citrus is mostly out of the game for me now. I've explored some niche and feel as though I'm more into the designer game. Things are more affordable, easier to wear, and less expensive! Of course, I do appreciate the artistry that goes into niche, but a lot of the time it's not necessarily something I want to wear or would be easy to pull off. In any case, let's get to the commentary.

Designers

Paco Rabanne
Olympea Intense -- LOVE this, it's a chewy, glowing amber salted-caramel bean

Dior
Hypnotic Poison EDT -- so I hear you like root beer floats? try not to drink this out of the bottle; the winter component of the coconut-tuberose trinity, see SL Datura Noir & Armaf Simply Blanc for more details

Prada
Candy Florale -- new year same regret

Elie Saab
Le Parfum Royal -- literally Coco Mademoiselle with less patch and more orange jellies, you know the gourmet ones shaped like orange slices, it's exactly this
Girl of Now -- milky almond sugar bomb, probably gave my nosebuds cavities, best enjoyed mixed with some unscented lotion to prevent a trip to the dentist

(can you guess my favourite house?)
Mugler
Angel -- my one true love, I will never betray her, she makes me feel ready to slay a few demons with a magical sword before I go out for a socially distant first date
Angel Muse -- girl who likes nutella, probably doesn't slay demons but definitely goes on dates
Angel Taste of Fragrance -- blast of chocolate Angel, dries down to honey, and does honey ever smell like pee to anyone or is that just me...?
Angel Liqueuer 2009 -- identical to Angel but with the honey drydown again! it's a pass for me my friends
Alien -- holy CRAP I love this stuff, you know there are angel girls and alien girls? I think I've made a booboo and become both, maybe it's the reformulation that makes it more wearable but this stuff is liquid gold, I desperately want to test older formulations
Alien Essence Absolue -- a vanilla Play-Doh Alien, super highly coveted due to discontinuation and only worn on the most special occasions (side note: does anyone else use expensive/discontinued frags extremely sparingly? I'm so afraid of running out of ANYTHING)
Alien Oud Majestueux -- barnyard poopy animalic jasmine sexytimes, so beautiful but literally where the hell do you wear this ever?
Womanity -- absolutely not like a rotting tuna mermaid, just salty fig bliss and what I expected the original Olympea to smell like, love love love

Cartier
Le Baiser du Dragon -- literal fire, lol, breath from an alcoholic dragon particularly keen on amaretto, one of my first loves

Guerlain
Mon Guerlain -- the tiny, newest baby to my collection, a poor substitute for my beloved Lavandes Trianon but of course Lancome discontinues their best, a bit sharp and alcoholic on me but quite beautiful and feminine from far away
La Petite Robe Noire -- syrupy cherry juice, a bit medicinal, sweet like Dolores Haze, also great for a sunny winter day
Aqua Allegoria Limon Verde -- perfect lime, fizzy, figgy, mojito-y, try not to sniff it in the winter if you don't want to feel sad that summer is 6 months away

Lancome
Magie Noire -- forest witch brewing potions and enchanting lost men to test her new spells, may or may not have toadified a few by accident

YSL
Libre -- power scent for the lady who has all her ish together, I prefer the Intense but this was available at the discounters and is also amazing so I mean I'm okay with that too!

Givenchy
L'Interdit Intense -- so apparently sesame + tuberose makes Jolly Ranchers now

Tom Ford
Black Orchid -- my other one true love, maybe infidelity is allowed in this case, but my love affair with Black Orchid only occurs in the dead of night, an ultra sexy and mysterious, vaguely-gourmand-floral brew
Noir Extreme -- i hate cardamom and this is a cardamom bomb, decanted the heck out of this, too masculine for me, end of story

Hermes
Un Jardin Sur le Nil -- first spray: pure Windex; it's getting a bit better though, this would definitely work out better in the summer, though maybe the house of Hermes just isn't for me (looking at you Twilly, Eau des Merveilles)

Lolita Lempicka
Lolita Lempicka Mon Premier -- it's not actually sprayed! I got sent the wrong one but the bottle was cute so I included it here lol

Lalique
Encre Noire -- eau de dead log in its early stages of decomposition; it's being used to grow new life, like, life as in lots and lots of vetiver

Calvin Klein
Euphoria -- big big regret, why did it smell so good on the tester strip? sour and offputting, the reformulations really did this one dirty, not even good to use as a car spray, I'm so sad...
Obsession -- apart from the opening, which smells like a spicy radioactive peach incense sludge trying to knock you out harder than all of 2020, it's a love, the drydown is spicy vanilla heaven

Lanvin Arpege -- super creamy soapy white floral, like, soap made of double concentrated heavy cream-level creamy, also smells like L'Air du Temps if you want to pretend to be Agent Starling sometimes, just make sure to remember the Evyan skin cream
Clinique Aromatics Elixir -- crazy strong, dry bouquet of aromatics (duh) and white florals, beautiful in the summer IMO, spray more if you hate your coworkers
Salvador Dali Parfum de Toilette -- similar to Arpege but less on the soap, heavier on the florals, and the bottle cap is literally a giant nose
Jovan White Musk -- smells like a filthy millionaire's clean and happy baby, I love it and you will too

Niche/Private Line

TokyoMilk
Excess -- why are you in a 50ml when you should be in a 500ml? this is gorgeous, deep patchouli and blood orange, absolute love, terrified to wear because the day it runs out will be the saddest day

Diptyque
Do Son -- so I wanted Olene but this is incredibly beautiful, too, clean tuberose done right, feels like spring

L'Artisan Parfumeur
Premier Figuier -- at first I liked it but now it smells like a meat made out of a fig tree with lots of lily-of-the-valley, there's a strong savoury and vegetal quality doused in the white sap of a bleeding plant
Bois Farine -- another oddball, like ultra-milky powdered peanuts or these chinese sesame candies (徐福记) or even de la Rosa Mazapan minus every molecule of C12H22O11 (sugar) that ever existed, dry and powdery like your nose is attempting the cinnamon challenge without the cinnamon

Kerosene
Sweetly Known -- here we go, holy crap I don't even know what to say, the ultimate gourmand has been found? am I allowed to say that? will I spontaneously combust after making such a statement? this is a spiced stollen in a bottle and even though I hate spices, the spices here are definitely more than fine with me
Unknown Pleasures -- another thing that I hate: citrus, but done right! drydown becomes a bit complex, richer and more delicious, love love love, though it makes me hungry when I wear it...

Lancome
Roses Berberanza -- have you ever wanted to smell like salty wet nuts? that's the opening, but hang in there, the roses are testing your patience and you will thusly be rewarded

Serge Lutens
Datura Noir -- this is part of the coconut-tuberose trinity (with Dior HP & TF Soleil Blanc) but the more floral, year-round beauty, dries down a bit sour on me though which makes me big sad
Le Participe Passe -- my alltime fave SL, dark caramel without the usual sugar bomb with depth from the cumin, which absolutely does not smell like BO
Chergui -- powdery, lipsticky, and a bit tobacco-y, again decanted the heck out of it except I kind of feel sad about it because I like it more and more each day

Comptoir Sud Pacifique
Vanille Abricot -- such a happy, uplifting fruity vanilla, like a brand new stick of gum in a good way
Vanille Banane -- you love banana milk, I love banana milk, the opening is banana milk heaven but dries down kind of green and peel-y, unfortunately

Van Cleef & Arpels
Bois Dore -- tonka bean water that turns into cherry-like almonds, a sleeper hit, sneaks up on you and suddenly you're on the internet trying to buy every single VC&A private line blend that has ever existed

Dolce&Gabbana
Velvet Amber Sun -- not for me, opening is too pungent, too smoky, musty dirty, labdanum is way too much for me (sold it!) though the presentation and box are soooo pretty

Celebrity/Dupes

Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely -- it's pretty sharp and boozy in the opening, I barely get any musk but it would be a wonderfully cooling scent for a hot day
Ariana Grande Cloud -- don't know how I feel about this, sometimes it's incredibly musky and masculine with the lavender, other days it's a sweet little thing!
Armaf Just Jack Simply Blanc -- citrusy, happy, summery, nearly spot-on for TF's Soleil Blanc, the final summer component of the coconut-tuberose trinity
Jenny Glow Myrrh & Bean -- strong juice for the price, definitely layers very very well under Dior HP to add more depth!
Club de Nuit Intense Women -- a beautiful gothic rose/patchouli, however ruined by the saffron because I despise saffron!
Swiss Arabian Shaghaf Oud -- takes the cake for the sweetest perfume that has ever existed, absolutely nuclear, decanted half of it and still have enough to last at least 3 lifetimes

Things I recently got rid of: Mancera Red Tobacco, Bvlgari Omnia, Britney Spears Hidden Fantasy, Cartier L'Envol de Cartier EDP

Things I'm looking to pick up!

As if this huge collection was not enough, I'm definitely looking to pick up the following: ELdO Like This, Diptyque Olene, Dior Balade Sauvage (holy crap the price tag, can someone please recommend a good sweet fig?), Angel Eau Croisiere 2019/2020, Chloé by Chloé, Xerjoff Fiore D'Ulivo, some Ganache Parfums as well! I'm also on the hunt for some good rose scents and tea scents, let me know your favourites!

Beginner's Sample Reviews and Ratings - Part One

[27M] in the southern part of the US. I have been sampling over the last couple months on what I have read were popular fragrances plus other random scents. I did zero research on what the notes of the fragrances were at the time of the review. Below are my initial thoughts and beginners perspective after wearing the fragrance for an hour. I have reviewed 18 scents thus far. Looking to do my Part Two review next month as I have more samples coming to test. Please suggest others that are must-try's, as I am really wanting to try the best of the best.

Gucci Envy for Men by Gucci: This is definitely the best I've smelled thus far. Smells like fresh mulched wood, ginger tea and pure testosterone. Unreal. I cannot get enough of this one. Too bad its discontinued. 10/10.
Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdijian: Incredibly sexy, like a hot young woman taking off a super tight black dress, feminine. This is sex in a bottle. I wouldn't wear this but I would if I was a young woman under 30. 9.5/10.
Aventus by Creed: Extremely masculine but really fruity, smells like what you would expect Tom Brady to smell like. 9.5/10.
Soleil Neige by Tom Ford: I love this smell, I would say definitely more feminine. Reminds me of a confident young professional who knows what she wants in life. Smells incredible as it dries. Again not for me but would love this on a young woman. 9.5/10.
Noir Extreme by Tom Ford: Date night type of scent, it's wildly unique and has a softer dry down. Definitely a comforting type of scent in my mind. Currently looking to purchase this one. 9/10.
Beach Hut Man by Amouage: Wildly fresh like lemon zested all over a bed of moss, springtime wood. This reminds me of green golf course near the ocean. Definitely would be good for summer time or hotter weather. I love this scent and will probably purchase more at some point this early spring. 8.5/10.
Ombre Leather by Tom Ford: I prefer this over the Tuscan Leather as it is much 'lighter' but just as powerful. I could see men or woman wearing this for sure and both would smell incredible. It's a slightly sweet, definitely soft leather but darker scent. Date night fragrance, one of the most unique I've tried. Recommend sampling this one. 8.5/10.
Grey Vetiver by Tom Ford: Clean smelling like walking into a fancy hotel on Miami Beach. Not in your face just smells straight delightful. 8.5/10.
Tuscan Leather by Tom Ford: Heavy, leathery, smoky, like an old study where you would read and smoke a cigar in. This is probably what a young Clint Eastwood smelled like. A little goes a LONG way. 8/10.
Terre D'Hermes by Hermes: Older smelling but fresh. Like a mall-walking-grandpa wearing squeaky clean New Balance's. I enjoy it. 6.5/10.
F*cking Fabulous by Tom Ford: To me it's more feminine and soft. It smells like I should be playing a grand piano. Pleasant for sure but I wouldn't wear it. 5.5/10.
Original Musk Blend No. 1 by Kiehl: Like generic speed stick deodorant musk smell, definitely not bad and was fresher than I anticipated. Like a gym teacher and not in your face. 5/10.
Portrait of a Lady by Frederic Malle: Smells like an Art Museum or what a person in an Art Museum would smell like. Definitely a feminine scent to me. 5/10.
Black Orchid by Tom Ford: Definitely pungent and strong. Getting initial Nyquil and heavy floral hits from this. Probably more of a formal event scent for a lady in their 40's/50's. Not a fan. 4.5/10.
The Noir 29 by Le Labo: This smells like a Hallmark store, and a bit like baby wipes. Not great, probably slightly more feminine. 4.5/10.
Tom Ford for Men: Generic men's fragrance. This is what a basic 40 year old dad would wear. 4/10.
Santal 33 by Le Labo: This smells like a church, small hint of leather?, almost has a janitorial cleaner type of smell to it. This was one of the most hyped fragrances I saw consistently posted. To me it was not that great. 3/10.
Let them Eat Cake by TokyoMilk: Super sweet like fake blue frosting on a cupcake, don't like this at all. 2/10.

Reviews coming in Part Two:
Shalimar by Guerlain, Elixir Des Merveilles by Hermes, Dead Sexy by TokyoMilk, Lost Cherry by Tom Ford, Noir de Noir by Tom Ford, Cafe Rose by Tom Ford, Musc Ravageur by Frederic Malle, Virgin Island Water by Creed, Interlude Man by Amouage, Jazz Club by Martin Margiela, La Nuit de L'Homme by Yves Saint Laurent, Black Opium by Yves Saint Laurent + More that are recommended!

Vetiver Parfum Cologne by Roja Parfums

🌟-Fragrantica-🌟: Vetiver Parfum Cologne
Chypré : : Warm & Dry - Fresh, & Spicy
“There is no material in perfumery quite like Vetiver – it is at once earthy, smoky and leathery all in perfect harmony. Sophisticated and incredibly versatile, those who wear it are confident and self-assured – a presence in any room. Vibrant Citrus notes create a lively freshness around the dry warmth of Vetiver, whilst both Cedar Wood and Needles, and Oakmoss add heat and complexity. Everybody wants to be near him. It is the ultimate example of how a modern man should smell. The Vetiver wearer doesn’t provoke envy but instead, adoration.” - Roja Dove.
Vetiver Olfactory Description
Vetiver, a warm, dry, fresh, and spicy Chypré fragrance centred around the sultry smokiness of Vetiver, freshened by citrus and ‘green’ notes. The dynamism of Bergamot, Lemon, and lemon-like Litsea Cubeba is amplified by a spicy blend of Pepper, Pink Pepper, Nutmeg and Caraway. An unusual note of Celery Seed and Galbanum add further freshness to the central theme of hot, smoky Vetiver, on a warm base of Guaiacwood and Amyris tempered by Rose and Jasmine. Cedarwood and Cedar Needles are underscored by the dry scent of Oakmoss and sensual, leather-like Cistus and Labdanum to perfectly complete this quintessential Chypré fragrance.

I've been binge buying samples lately and been mostly disappointed. Here's my list of madness and a funny story.

I've been trying to find a signature scent for a while since I haven't been able to wear JPG Le Male for 18 years since meeting my wife, as she hates it (there's a funny twist to that story at the bottom of this post!). So I went on a scent pilgrimage to find something to replace it and this is what I have sampled of late:
Acqua Di Gio Profumo - Nice clean scent. May or may not buy a bottle at some point.
Amouage Interlude Man - Nope....didn't like that at all.
Artelier Cologne Bois Blonds - Got it as a free gift with some other decants. I don't think I can even smell it. So nondescript that my brain won't even register it
Bond No 9 Bleecker Street - A bit boring for my tastes. Not unpleasant but a bit meh
Burberry London For Men - This came in the post today and I blind bought a 100ml bottle (which is something I never do because I am a picky git apparently) because it was only £31 and everyone says it smells like Xmas.....and who doesn't want to smell like Xmas. Wow! Where has this been all my life? I adore this stuff. It really does smell like Xmas. I'm going to wear this a lot. Hilarious that I have gone through countless niche and expensive frags to find something I like and the cheapest one I try I absolutely love.
By Killian Back To Black - I was hoping to like this but secretly glad that I didn't because of the price.
Chanel Allure Homme Sport Eau Extreme - Really didn't like the smell of that!
Chanel Bleu de Chanel - Yeah it's nice....but I don't get why people go nuts for it as it does just smell like any old shower gel you can buy for two quid in the supermarket
CK One - Had to buy a bottle as I hadn't worn it in decades and it's still a great scent
Creed Aventus - Don't get the fuss around this. Too cloying and bland for me
Creed Green Irish Tweed - Love it. Will definitely get a bigger decant when I've finished this - or maybe even treat myself to a bottle. So sophisticated and green. Mmmm.
Creed Millesime Imperial - It's alright....that's about it. Didn't last. Wouldn't buy it.
Creed Original Santal - Pretty nice. A bit sickly after a while. A bit Joop like.
Creed Virgin Island Water - Coconut.....that's it....for that price....you're kidding right?
Dior Fahrenheit Parfum - Some days I love it...other days it's too petrol. My wife likes it.
Dior Homme EDT - Nice but not great
Dior Homme Parfum - Lovely. My wife is not keen but I really like it. Will buy a bottle at some point.
Dior Sauvage EDT - Huh? So bland that I thought I'd been sold a dud until I smelled it in store. Rubbish. No idea why this is popular.
Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur - Don't know about this. Like and dislike it from day to day
Frederic Malle Portraiot of A Lady - Yeah an old lady.....not for me.
Guerlain Habit Rouge - Really nice old school fragrance. Like a posh Old Spice. I like this. Might get a bottle.
Guerlain Heritage - I loved this when I first smelled it. Wore it for a day and it got too much by the end of the day and I had to shower. A shame as the scent is lovely....just too overpowering.
Guerlain Homme EDP - Lovely. Bought a full bottle straight away. Definitely a summertime signature for me. Mojito in a bottle.
Guerlain L’Homme Ideal EDP - Love it. Wife bought me a bottle straight away.
Guerlain Vetiver - Nice clean, safe, grown up scent. Won't buy a bottle because of Grey Vetiver existing.
Initio Parfums Prives Oud for Greatness - Nope....did not like that
L’Occitane Eau Des Baux - Quite nice and cheap as chips. Wouldn't buy a full bottle though
Lalique Encre Noir - Didn't like this at first but on second try I really like it's weirdness. Might get a bottle at some point.
MFK Grand Soir - I loved this when I first got it and immediately bought a large decant. Can't stand it now for some reason. Just went right off it.
MFK Baccarat Rouge - Too sweet and cloying. Nope.
MFK Masculin Pluriel - Nice scent. A bit soft and subdued. Not worth the money.
MM Replica By The Fireplace - Fabulous! Got a large decant and will be getting a full bottle when it runs out. Fantastic smokey, caramelised loveliness
MM Replica Jazz Club - Nice enough on first sniff but gets way too cloying and sickly for me
Mugler Alien - Yes it's a women's scent. Don't care...I have a bottle and it's lovely. SOOOO loud though. Needs bleach to get it off
Mugler Pure Havane - Another one that I don't get the hype over. Too cloying for me.
Old Spice - I mean, why not? It still smells great even if it only lasts a second. Stupid cheap as well
Paco Rabanne One Million EDT - Way too sweet and cloying. Didn't like it
PDM Layton - Yet another hypebeast I don't get. Smells to plasticky for my liking
Penhaligon's Sartorial - Very nice Fougere. Nothing spectacular. Just nice. Probably wouldn't buy a bottle.
Terre D’Hermes Eau De Intense Vetiver - Not bad. Gets a bit much after a while though
Terre D'Hermes - Love it. The Labrador of scents....safe and classic. Will buy a bottle when my decant runs out.
Tom Ford Beau De Jour - I need to revisit this one as I really liked it, but the dry down got really cloying and sickly after a few hours. Otherwise it's a fantastic scent
Tom Ford Black Orchid - Love love love this. Getting a bottle for Xmas. Absolute filth in a bottle! Smells expensive and seductive. Can't get enough of it.
Tom Ford For Men - Nice but doesn't last. Reminds me of something else. I think it's the DKNY one for men that came in the Apple shaped bottle. I might be misremembering that smell though.
Tom Ford Grey Vetiver - Love this as well. Sophisticated and smells great. Will buy a bottle.
Tom Ford Noir - Smells like an old lady. Nothing wrong with that but I'm not one
Tom Ford Noir De Noir - Smells even more like an old lady.
Tom Ford Ombre Leather - Thought I'd love this because of TL. Hated it.
Tom Ford Oud Wood - Nope....didn't like that one at all. Smelled like arse.
Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille - Good god! This is spectacular to me. Bought a large decant. Wear it a lot! This could be my new signature scent.
Tom Ford Tuscan Leather - Love this one. Smells like money. Can be a bit in your face....but worth it.
Valentino Uoumo - Valentino Oh No for me I'm afraid. Too sickly.
Vera Wang for Men - Really like this and so does the wife. Lasts about thirty seconds on me though :( Still have been through a few bottles of it before embarking on my scent journey though.
Viktor and Rolf Spicebomb - Got a bottle of this and it's great.
YSL La Nuit De L'Homme - Love it. Bought a bottle straight away. Sexy quiet scent.

I'm sure I've missed one or two off of that list but those are the decants I currently have either cluttering up a drawer or being used regularly. I need to do something with all of these bottles of things I don't like. Maybe I'll put them on eBay as a job lot.
Now for the funny twist on the JPG Le Male story:
I wore Le Male from the day it was released and I absolutely adored it. It was my perfect fragrance and had become my signature scent for seven years until I met my wife and she dropped the bombshell that she couldn't stand it. Obviously I stopped wearing it because I love her and wanted to smell nice for her. I can't remember what I wore instead but I soon found Vera Wang For Men, which she loved, and I wore for years as my signature scent.
Fast forward to this week and I have gotten a bit disillusioned with trying all of the most popular frags on the top tens of everyone's lists, so I decide to buy a tester of Le Male from eBay just to see if I would still like it as much as I used to. It arrived two days ago and sure enough I smelled it and fell in love all over again. I know that it has been reformulated and is not as strong as it once was, but it still smells amazing and I felt a pang of pain in my heart that I could never wear it again. When my wife came home from work I didn't tell her what I'd bought but told her to smell the tester strip I had sprayed it on, so I could watch her recoil in horror.......only she didn't.....the reaction I got was "Ooooh. I like that!! That's nice"
...........................what........the.......actual......f........
"That's Le Male!" I exclaimed.
"Is it?" she said "That's not the one I don't like"
Turns out it was Joop! she can't stand! Which was the other frag I wore a few times when we first started dating (facepalm).
So for 18 years I have been denied my favourite scent because my wife got it mixed up with something else.
Just to add insult to injury the next morning I sprang out of bed all excited because that was the day I was going to wear my beloved Le Male again.....only to knock it off of the shelf when reaching for the toothpaste and watching as it smashed on the sink and emptied it's contents down the drain. Fate doesn't want me to wear it apparently :)
I bought a full bottle the same day and it is arriving tomorrow!
Edit: Thanks for the responses an awards everyone. I didn’t think this would be so popular. What a wholesome community we have here 🙂

Best examples of "Guerlainade" note?

I have smelled exactly one Guerlain thus far in my life, I am not a stranger to fragrance but to Guerlain I admit I am. I got a sample of Guerlain Imperiale, and the opening is so beautiful I wish it would just last forever, to be honest. I'll pair it with Ferrari Bright Neroli to try and get longevity but the Bright Neroli has everything almost, except for that juicy lemoney beginning.
Is that the "Guerlainade" note? That lemon goodness? Or what would be the best example to start at for a total noob like me? I want to try Vetiver, but that's for the vetiver.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, idk if it matters. I'm a guy, but I don't care if it's unisex, or perfume-y, because if I like it and it smells good on me, I wear it. So unisex is fine, I feel like Imperiale totally is.

How would you describe the appeal of vetiver- as an acquired taste or something that always smells good?

I'm trying to figure out if vetiver has a "sexy" or attractive kind of feel to it. I posted about Encre Noire yesterday, and I'm loving it so so much. The dirty vetiver just smells so rich and deep and I think it smells attractive- like you would want to be near someone who smells like this. Its very alluring.
I really began to understand what vetiver was after smelling a few fragrances with it and being able to pick it out and I just absolutely adore this note because it is so damn unique but easily recognizable.
I also bring this up bc my ex-gf LOVED Fat Electrician and she always wanted to be up next to me smelling it. I know that one is sweeter, but to me it just gives off a masculine, mature smell in any fragrance where it is up front. I'm 31 and vetiver makes me feel classy. She was a few years younger and really adored vetiver too. Is it ageless? Timeless?
I haven't smelled Guerlain vetiver but I am sure it's good. That's on my next to buy list when I get paid alone with encre noire extreme.
I don't know, maybe I just fell in love with vetiver and it's just me. But what do you guys think of it? What's the appeal? What is it that we like about it so much ?

Blind Buy Ultra Success: Reminiscence Patchouli

I just wanted to give everyone a quick PSA about this amazing patchouli fragrance that I blind bought last week: Patchouli, by Reminiscence. I had seen some talk about it online, calling it a "reference patchouli". I love Guerlain Vetiver, often called the "reference vetiver", so why maybe lightning would strike twice? Indeed it did!
This stuff rocks. Launched in 1970 and targeted toward women, Patchouli is very unisex and not dated whatsoever. It smells like a chocolate spice cake, but with the sweetness toned way down and the icy, slightly menthol patchouli note giving it a ton of personality. In a way, it reminds me of Coromandel: Coromandel is a soft, spicy white chocolate. This is the cocoa version.
Performance is great. Lasts all day, very noticeable at a distance. Intoxicating. And it's on Fragrancenet for $40 right now. Check it out!

Encre Noire blew my expectations out of the water. Just some thoughts, short review.

I have seen all the hype for this one, and I have seen a lot of "I don't get the hype".
Honestly, when I decided to buy this, I had forgotten all about the hype and just remembered that it was well loved, and inexpensive.
I must say, at first I didn't like it. But I kept smelling it anyway. I kept getting whiffs of it. This scent is very unique, I would say, and the quality is insane for the price just like everyone says. I love the vetiver and this one just has such a rich, deep quality for such a small amount of notes. I really can't explain it. It really just "got" me after a few wears. Especially going out into the cold and smelling the wafts, I wore if for Christmas Eve and it just felt perfect. It just smells so smooth. This is definitely not for everyone, and I don't think everyone would enjoy this. But for people like us, omg...
The bottle looks so cool, this is a blind buy I do not regret. I haven't smell anything like it. The vetiver reminds me, in the slightest way, of Fat Electrician. I'm not a big fan of the vetiver in Lutens Vetiver Oriental. I haven't gotten the chance to smell Guerlain Vetiver but I feel like that one is a must. I like Grey Vetiver by TF.
I just had to share that sometimes the hype is real. I know the fragcomm tends to REALLY hype things up, but this is totally worth it to me.
Bonus if there's any other vetivers that give off a similar vibe.

My cabinet full of smells....

Me: I never knew that there existed a "fragrance community." Now that I found it, it's interesting to me. I've always enjoyed "smelling good" and in champagned fueled poking around reddit, I found this sub. So, I thought you guys might be interested in my thoughts on some of the fragrances I've accumulated over the years, essentially immune from an internet community that I really didn't know existed. A little bit about me, if you're interested. I'm 44, male and am "in finance." I am at a point in my life where I am divorced, financially independent, and dating women across an age range from 24-50. I mention this only because it seems like a lot of the fragrance discipline seems to be oriented around what the opposite sex seems to find attractive. Sure, all that is fun but mainly, I enjoy the ideas of scent memories and the stories that are in the smells I wear. Probably unnecessarily romantic but in the long run, we're all dead so..who cares? May as well have a blast while we're here..
Anyway, here is a quick look at my "scent wardrobe," I think you guys call it? And my thoughts about some of them.
Adidas: Sport Fever I bought this probably 15 years ago at a drug store because once upon a time, I enjoyed a Hugo Boss fragrance which came in a round ball and smelled like oranges and coriander. This had orange on the label and seemed "sporty." It smells approximately like Creed Aventus (more on that later) because it has a lot of fruit and mint business going on. It doesn't smell anything at all like the Hugo Boss that inspired its purchase. It's just ok. It smells like a drugstore cologne that cost $5. It's not terrible but don't buy it. There's nothing exciting going on, here. If you want to toss this on after a shave, no problem but don't expect to smell amazing. Also, though, you won't smell bad. Next.
Aqua Velva: Musk This stuff.... It's another $6 drug store smell but it smells like getting deals done in New York City in 1986. It's too strong and it smells artificial but it somehow smells like business. I feel like this is what men think men should smell like to get the secretaries excited in the movie "Big." There is a woman out there who will follow you anywhere because you wore this but you better want her because all the others will think that you smell like Harvey Keitel in "Bad Lieutenant" but maybe you A, don't care and B, want to smell exactly like that. You should own this.
Aqua Velva: Aqua Velva Ice Blue This will make you smell like you just got back from a submarine assignment in WW2. It's great to throw on liberally after a shave. Least of all because it burns like a mother fucker and will mix with your coffee and morning cigarette to wake you up. I used to wear this all the time because my cheating ex wife liked it. Probably because it reminded her of her grandfather. Even at the time, I thought, "This appeals to women who have daddy issues." It probably still does but for probably obvious reasons, I don't wear it anymore.
Ariana Grande: Cloud I bought this because a really cute sales 20 something year old sales girl at Ulta told me that it smelled exactly like a much more expensive perfume while I was there buying nail polish with my kid. To be honest, I didn't give a crap what it smelled like. I was hitting on the 20 something year old Ulta girl. It smells like dessert. I'll wear it sometimes but not when I expect to be taken seriously. This is actually a fun fragrance and not offensive. If I'm "jeans and a sweater" and picking apples or something, I'll wear this. It's like an actually reasonably well made version of what I think I remember the freshman girls in college wearing (which was probably Charlie or Teen Spirit deodorant or something.) I should probably throw this out or give it to my kid. The 20 something and I went out a few times for drinks but I think she needs surgery to remove her cell phone from her hand and an intervention on her social media addiction.
Bath and Body Works: Bourbon I go to Bath and Body works because they sell Proraso shave cream, which you can really only get in Italy, under the name of "Bigelow." They also have fragrances which I will occasionally sniff when I go in to buy shave cream. This one was one of those. I have a thing for stuff that smells ambery and churchy and this one gets there. This has that "new perfume" smell. I don't know, is that "ambroxyn?" who knows. But once it mellows down, it's really rich and smooth. Very woody and masculine. It's probably a little "young" for me but it's pretty generic and just smells like "fall." That said, I haven't worn it this fall, yet. It's strongish and I've had people either tell me that it smells "nice" or not comment on it at all which is potentially a worse indictment since they definitely smell it.
Bath and Body Works: Dark Amber This shit smells delicious. It smells like powder and amber. Period. I like the smell of amber way more than powder but this is really nice and cold weather feeling. I think that this is might be a shittily created scent because Bath and Body works, right? But it consistently gets me told that I smell good. This seems inoffensive, generally pleasing and I like the way that it smells, even though it isn't really that complex. You can buy this pretty worry free. Could also easily be worn by a woman.
Bigelow: Lemon 1999 This is, to my mind, just great. It smells like lemons and salt water and once you spray it on your skin, it almost disappears unless someone is right on top of you. There's very little complexity here but the lemon smell is so pure and clean. I cook a lot so I really appreciate pure smells like garlic, lemon and strawberries. This doesn't smell "like" lemon. It smells lemon. It smells like you just walked by a lemon tree in Sicily. I don't wear this because I want to smell good to anyone but me. It stays tight and really close to you. You're not going to leave a lemon cloud behind yourself. This one, impossibly, came also from Bath and Body Works. If it were $200 at Bloomingdales, I would have bought it. I think it cost me $30. This is great. Next time you're in Bath and Body Works getting cookie scented hand sanitizer, buy this.
Burberry: London This smells like the drawing room at Christmas from the Nutcracker. It's fucking brilliant. I'll wear this in the middle of the summer when I want to smell like Santa Claus is coming. It hits all the spots. It's clean but heavy. It just smells like home and comfort. If you want to feel at peace while things are seemingly out of control, wear this. I don't remember why or when I bought this but it smells like comfort. Buy this.
Burberry: Touch People have commented that this smells great on me. I think it smells like shit. It smells like a baby powder bomb. I really only wear it very occasionally because it apparently smells much better on my skin than I think it does. Don't buy this. I don't trust people who say that this smells good. Too heavy, too sneezy and too much powder. No go.
Burberry: Brit for Him This is ok but only smells "sophisticated" if you don't know what Guerlain fragrances smell like. I honestly think that there are $5 CVS fragrances that smell better than this. It's really thick and has a fake rosy smell to it. I smells like they tried hard to make it smell good but focused mostly on making it smell "strong." I don't love this one but will very occasionally wear it to convince myself to not wear it next time.
Burberry: Brit Rhythm This smells better than the Brit. But is also probably too "young" for me. It's got a nice vegetal flavor going on and smells like it wants to smell like basil and patchouli but it also smells very grating and aggressive (while still not offensive.) I could wear this but I'd vaguely smell like everyone else in my firm. Pass on this one. It's ok but not great. It's pretty generic and smells at the same time like everything else but just enough different from everything else that it's not quite the same.
Cartier: Pasha de Cartier Now, we're starting to get into serious business. This smells like money and also, vaguely, my pediatrician in 1979. Pasha just smells aggressive. I'm pretty sure it will fill a room with a strong but tolerable smell. It smells uniquely like Pasha de Cartier. You know it immediately, when you smell it. It smells like you paid an interior designer to tell you to have no furniture except for Relling chairs in your office. It smells like you own a 911 turbo which you've never taken above 80 mph. It smells like you could fuck the wife of the guy you're talking to but you'd probably chicken out if it came down to it. I love Pasha de Cartier.
Cartier: Declaration This shit stinks. I love it but it stinks. When you put it on, you think, "Do I smell like cumin seed? Will people think I stink?" The answer is "Yes." I wish I were brave enough to wear this more often. It is an absolutely fascinating smell. But the only one who will find it "fascinating" is you. Do NOT wear this in public. But DO buy it. I dare you.
Creed: Aventus I paid way too much for this because I was in Bloomingdales and was looking to spend "stupid money" for no reason whatsoever and the shopper girl told me that this was the next hot thing. It seems like this is highly regarded in the fragrance reddits but I don't think that it's worth the price. It's funny because somehow, in the store, it seemed a little steep but not wholly unreasonable. So I bought it. But I have worn this very infrequently. I can't put my finger on it but it's simultaneously strong but weak. Sweet but not. Cloying yet subtle. I originally thought that it smelled good but I don't anymore. When I put this on, it somehow convinces me that it smells great and will smell even better but it never makes good on that promise. It's weird. I don't hate it but it aggravates me that I paid so much for it, to smell essentially like fruit cocktail. It's just ok. I feel like maybe Guerlain and Penhaligons have spoiled me and I would have enjoyed this more if it had been way less money.
Davidoff: Cool Water Coral Reef This one, I like. It seems like "dirty" Cool Water to me. I like cool water just fine but this is a little bit more (or less.) There's nothing ground breaking, here. It smells like the sea, sans fish and stink. When I'm on a boat, I will wear this. I don't know how to be more plain. It seems like there's a minty bit in there that pushes it a little beyond the saltiness of Cool Water. I think Cool Water is really a classic and this is a good if slight improvement on it. You can't go wrong with this one but it's also not going to knock anyone's socks off.
Dior: Sauvage This is garbage. Plain and simple. I bought this because I was talking to another guy in my office about fragrance and he told me all about how Sauvage was that best thing that had been released in the past hundred years. So, I went to see my guy at Bloomingdales and got a bottle. This shit stinks. It smells like Axe body wash. There's something in it that makes me think of the "too much cologne" guy. I don't even care about the stuff that's under that. The primary smell is the "too much cologne guy." I was honestly shocked. I didn't figure that Dior would release something so brutal and blunt. Maybe this is just too "young" for me but I think that it's unnecessarily heavy and falsely deep. Not impressed. I like Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue Sun for women WAY better. More on that later. Regardless, Sauvage is a no go. Do not buy this.
Dolce and Gabbana: Light Blue Sun This is a women's fragrance. I don't care. It smells amazing. It's not unisex. If you're a man and you wear this, you're going to smell like a chick. But a really sophisticated chick with her shit entirely together. This smells like the beach and salt water and the sun and coppertone. It smells like a day that you wished you'd known was going to be as perfect as it turned out to be so that you could have paid attention better. This smells like a sexy librarian with a trust fund who you think, "She has no idea how hot she is." You're wrong. She knows exactly how hot she is and she wrecks men like you. I love this and wear it regularly during the summer. When told that this smells good, I always think, "Of course you think it smells good. I smell like the woman with the story you'd like to be yours."
Dunhill: Edition Do you want to smell like Magnum PI? For an hour? Buy Edition. Edition is magical. For a very short time. If you want to smell like James Bond, killing people after you just met a smoking hot spy at some roulette table, you need Edition. I don't know what this smells like. But it doesn't last long. It just smells like British. I don't know what more to say about that. It smells like green plants and assertiveness and a Jaguar XK150. You'll think you smell good and you'll be right but nobody else will be able to smell you after you leave the house. Edition smells absolutely amazing but you better do whatever you're up to quickly because it will leave you just as quickly as you put it on. This is like a less aggressive de Pasha. Buy it and then, be annoyed that it lasts for shit. Come to think of it, James Bond movies are only 2 hours long so maybe it lasts exactly as long as it needs to.
Dunhill: Fresh Do NOT buy this. Because it smells amazing and like very few other fragrances and it is my secret. This is very near all the other "sea" fragrances but goes further, somehow. This smells like the movie Dirty Rotten Scoundrels in the best way possible. This smells like Nice in August. The sea is there, the flowers are there, the food is there. This smells like that linen shirt that you almost don't put on because you think, "This makes me look like P. Diddy...I probably shouldn't wear this." But, yes, you should and who cares? Dunhill Fresh is so slick and subtle but also different. Nobody will tell you that you smell great because you just will and it smells like you're expecting to smell great and it's not a big deal. I've worn this on the Mediterranean and it was exactly perfect. It doesn't need to be warm and sunny to wear this. But it will definitely remind you of the days of summer.
Guerlain: Habit Rouge I bought this because my grandfather always had it. This smells like your grandmother's ass and lipstick when you first spray it on. But....wait. It turns into something amazing. I don't know how but it does. Habit Rouge starts out smelling like fake roses and playdoh. And then, it somehow morphs into something that can't be described. It smells like meritocracy and maturity and magic and the drawer of a dresser that has smelled exactly the same in one of the houses on Bellevue Avenue in Newport for 100 years. Be clear. You will not like or "get" Habit Rouge the first time you wear it. You will think that it smells like an old lady. You will think that it's a lot of things but none of them, "male." Stop. Let it sink in. Let it sit. Habit Rouge is so good it should be illegal. You need to have balls the size of Godzilla to wear Habit Rouge. Or, wear Habit Rouge and you will end up with Godzilla sized balls. I don't want to be crass but, there are two fragrances (both Guerlain) that have elicited the statement, "You smell fucking amazing" in bed. The first is Habit Rouge. Once you get Habit Rouge on your skin it's nearly impossible to understand why other fragrances exist at all. Habit Rouge mixed with light body odor and the smell of having been outdoors is so good it should be a federal offense.
Guerlain: Heritage This is what Chanel Egoiste would smell like if they took the "bug spray" smell out. Again, almost impossible to describe. It's got that "Dead Poets Society" smell but deeper and more serious. It's got a warmer, velvety feel to it. There's a leather background to it and something that just makes you want to keep smelling it. How Guerlains are around $100 a bottle, I have no idea whatsoever. Heritage isn't my "signature" scent but it could be. It could be anyone's. I'm probably wrong but if you're a young guy who has been told to get Sauvage...ignore that and get Heritage. They don't smell the same but trust me that you'll realize that this was a great idea much later.
Guerlain: L'Instant I'm going to keep this short and tell you two things, here. 1. L'Instant smells like chocolate covered orange peel, incense, vanilla and the heavy red velvet curtains in a French whore house and will change but lasts almost 24 hours. 2. L'Instant WILL get you laid. Guaranteed. By women or men who know exactly what they're doing and are unnaturally talented at fucking. I'm sorry to be coarse but some things need to be stated exactly as they are. L'Instant goes great with my Ferragamo loafers. L'Instant smells like you've never made a bad decision because even your bad decisions turn out brilliantly. L'Instant smells like the integrity of Abraham Lincoln crossed with the filth of a really artfully shot porn film. If all Guerlain made was this, they could consider themselves "done." This stuff is in an entirely other league. This is the other Guerlain that has elicited the contextual comment referenced in the Habit Rouge summary. The things that you will do and the situations that you will find yourself in while wearing L'Instant will ruin your life and you'll love every minute. Please, don't buy this. I'm warning you. You'll accidentally buy a boat. You'll have a soundtrack that only you can hear. You'll feel bad for Chris Isaak and Helena Christensen that they were so prudish and awkward in that Wicked Game video in comparison to you.
Guerlain: Vetiver I read somewhere that JFK used to wear this. I can see that. If you want to smell like Don Draper, wear this. It's pretty straight forward and smells like Vetiver. How do I know that? Because I have Royall Vetiver and the smell is almost identical. You can tell that this is well made and classic but it might not be the smell for you. I think that maybe, once upon a time, vetiver was a man's smell. But I think that enough time has passed that nobody remembers when men smelled like this. You'll have to decide how you play that. If you want to know what vetiver smells like, get this. If you want to smell like vetiver, get this. I haven't given this one a fair shot but I want to. It's very even toned and reasonable. It smells like it could be worn by someone dangerous but probably wouldn't be.
Lacoste: Pour Homme This is a great middle of the road smell. This is suit but with no tie. It's citrusy but also smells a little like burning leaves. I had a friend in high school who wore United Colors of Benneton and this reminds me of that. I don't think that they smell the same but I get the same, fun, innocent feeling from those days when I smell this. I think this would smell great on a man or a woman. I wear this now and then when I think, "Oh, I like that one. I haven't worn it in a while. I think I'll wear it today. This smells like a really solid concierge at the Hilton. He'll get you whatever you want and make you feel like a million bucks. No reason not to have this one.
Lacoste: Essential I like this Lacoste, too. It's very simple and very fresh. It smells like a fancy tennis game in 1983. Another high school memory, here. When I was in high school, I spent my summers working at the pool restaurant at the country club. This smells like that. It smells like sporty money but nothing too obnoxious or simplistic. It's exactly what it needs to be. This is a good fragrance for a steak dinner at one of those places where everything is a la carte. If you're wearing a polo shirt with an alligator on it, you should wear this because you'll smell exactly right and it's what everyone is imagining you probably smell like, anyway. Give the people what they want. I don't remember where or when I bought this but I feel like it's probably too cheap to not get. Again, if you're a young guy and someone told you to buy Dior Sauvage buy this instead. I say that because demographic-wise, this skews towards the younger women I've dated. 25 year old women with their first "real job in the city" seem to like this scent.
Lalique: Encre Noir I bought this at Neiman Marcus. I think that I'd be blown away by this if I hadn't smelled anything from Guerlain. This is heavy and smells like Dracula in a mossy forest. This might be one of my favorites if I could stop wearing L'Instant. This is very dark and thick. It's almost choking and intoxicating. It smells like new money. It smells like someone who knows that class and manners are important and is trying their best to be appropriate but didn't stop to consider whether smelling like forest Dracula is necessarily appropriate in all instances. This smells great and is very forgiving despite its heft. I wouldn't let my daughter date a guy who smelled like this but I would appreciate the hell out of his effort. On the right woman, this would smell incredible and dangerous. Buy it but don't wear it all the time.
Lalique: Encre Noir Extreme I also bought this at Neiman Marcus at the same time as the other one. Everything I said about the first one stands but this one somehow has a more citrusy furniture addition and the smell of incense inside a confessional. It's hard to decide which of these is better because they're simultaneously very close but also very different. Another solid one. I'm not as convinced that this one would be good "on the right woman" it might be good on the "wrong woman." If you smell her, let me know. I bought this once and would again.
Lalique: Bentley Intense Ok, in defense of "Sauvage guy" in my office, he also recommended this and he was right. I wasn't keen on the idea of a car fragrance. It seemed tacky to me. Is that the second place prize? "I can't afford a Bentley but I smell like their perfume?" But I must admit that this stuff smells great. Super easy to wear with a suit and tie or open collar and jeans. It's very rummy and a little bit leathery and has a smell of iced tea. Maybe it doesn't and I just get confused because it's the color of iced tea. This could almost be a Guerlain scent if Guerlain didn't insist on making everything smell like it came out of a steam powered time machine. It's modern enough to be modern but classic enough to be classic. This smells like a solid upstanding family man who was a little wild in his younger days but has toned it down and has settled into his adult life but still probably shouldn't be allowed to go to a bachelor party.
Michael Kors: Extreme Sky I feel like I shouldn't like this but I do. To me, Michael Kors is synonymous with people buying a Michael Kors bag when they really want a Vuitton but don't have the coin and convince themselves that Michael Kors is just as good. But this stuff smells like lightning and rain. I don't know another way to describe it. It's fresh and windy and feels like what the Sharper Image should smell like back when Sharper Image was cool and not just more expensive Spencers Gifts. (Are these references contemporary? Do those places still exist?) This smells like chrome and glass and track lighting. This smells like the guy at the BMW dealer who's the best salesman there and is somehow making 6 figures selling cars and has no idea that he could triple his income doing exactly what he's doing but selling something other than cars. I don't wear this often but I will miss it when it's gone because by that time, you won't be able to get it anymore. I probably shouldn't like this one but I do.
Penhaligons: Bayolea Do you want to spend an insane amount of money to smell like a barber shop in 1952? Then, this is for you. This stuff smells like a pirate ship if pirates weren't filthy and showered. This is like the best Bay Rhum that you will ever inhale. It smells like someone else's signature smell that they found ages ago for next to no money in some little shop in the Virgin Islands but which you will never be able to get. It smells like it should be cheap but the quality is just beyond next level. This is classic. They say that vetiver is the classic male scent but I think, really, it's this one. This smells like the guy with the 150' sail boat who used to sail his own boat but then hired a captain to sail it for him but then decided that he was going to go back to sailing his own boat again.
Penhaligons: Endymion This stuff is unbelievable. It reminds me of a very British Guerlain. This is up there with L'Instant and is somehow similar but with the addition of espresso. Very sophisticated. You might want to take up pipe smoking if you want to wear this. Or, at least, increase the number of leather bound first editions that you own. This is what Winston Churchill would smell like if he looked like George Clooney. I don't think that a younger guy could wear this. It doesn't smell like an old man but just like you need to mature into your first Kiton shirt, you need to be ready to step into this one. This smells like an F-50 CEO who somehow never has to do any work. No problem whatsoever with a woman wearing this one. I have one in particular who always uses a bit when she leaves.
Penhaligons: Juniper Sling. Gin martini. That's it. This smells like a gin martini without the alcoholic stink. People will ask you if they're correct that you smell like a martini. They will be. This one is fun to wear and I feel like it's a companion to Bayolea. To be fair to this one it only really smells like a martini for the first hour and then it turns into something that smells like the flowery freshness of a garden on a not too humid day. This reminds me of the 100 year old tile bathroom on the first floor of the NYAC. It smelled that way 100 years ago and will still smell the same 100 years from now, long after you're dead. This just smells like class in a bottle. If you actually want to embrace smelling like Gordon Gekko with absolutely no apologies, you should buy this. I don't think women like the way this smells. I don't think that the men wearing it particularly care.
Pinaud: Clubman Classic Vanilla This is in a plastic bottle and costs $6 at your local Walgreens. Penhaligons could easily take this and just dump it into fancier glass bottles and sell it for $150. I think that they've been making this the same way for decades and it is such a sleeper that I almost hesitate to mention it. This has so much going on and is spicy without being too spicy, only faintly vanilla-y and is an all around great scent. I'll go through phases where this is my go-to for a month at a time. This smells the way Mrs. Robinson from the Graduate wanted her men to smell. Benjamin didn't smell that way because I'm sure he wore Old Spice but she let it slide. You're a fool if you don't buy this the next time you have to refill your tooth paste supply.
Royall: Vetiver I find this one interchangeable (more or less) with Guerlain Vetiver. It's a little bit citrusy and very thickly vetiver. I read somewhere that the origin of vetiver was from the fact that they used vetiver oil to ship very expensive men's clothing and keep bugs away from it but that the Vetiver smell never really went away. That seems to make sense to me on this one. This is exactly what I imagine a very nice suit would smell like if it were shipped to me in 1870. It smells classic and grassy and seems like it wants to be cloying but never really gets there. I think that for a while Royall stuff was cheap and then expensive and then cheap again. I bought all my Royalls ages ago at Brooks Bros so I'm sure I paid way, way too much for them. But whatever they cost, it's worth it just for the cool bottles with the crown caps.
Royall: Spyce This Smells like super fantastic Old Spice. It smells like a super deep version of your grandfather after he just got back from playing golf in a nice cashmere v neck sweater. If you want to smell like old spice but better, this is a very refined way to go. It really does smell like allspice, cinnamon, cloves and cardamom but it never ventures into cookie territory. It's very warm and fairly heavy. I think that Royall, being Bermuda based, thinks that it has mostly warm-weather type scents. I'd be careful with this in warm weather. It's not unwearable in the warm but I'd go light on it.
Royall: Muske Musky and powdery. This is like a warm manly blanket. If you want to smell like you're very clearly in charge and nobody needs to worry anymore because you've shown up...this is the one. Mrs Robinson wanted her men to smell like Clubman Classic Vanilla but when they smelled like Royall Muske, she was immediately made weak in the knees. This is another one that could almost be in the Guerlain / Penhaligons mix but isn't subtle enough. And it's not apologetic about it's unsubtlety. It's very refined but still rough around the edges. This is what Ernest Hemmingway should have smelled like if he had gotten his shit together, grown up and conquered his alcoholism. Easy buy.
Viktor and Rolf: Spicebomb Fresh I bought this accidentally because I thought that it was Spicebomb. This is nice and easy to wear. It's got a little bit of smokiness, somehow and a lot of citrus. I don't detect much spice there but who knows. I've been told more than once that this smells good on me. It's easy when I'm not in the mood to think too hard about what I want to wear or be bothered to "pick one." Middle of the road, probably could be worn pretty easily by women.
So there you go. Going back and reading this, I'm realizing that I likely have Peter Pan syndrome but also want to smell like something from 200 years ago. But the stories are fun. I look forward to continuing to read all about everyone else's excitement about fragrances. It's a real kick.

[WTS] Xerjoff Lira, Akro Awake, Franpin 1270, Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille Warning NOT bargain prices!!!

Pictures
Alright, now it’s time for me to move on to the ones that will hurt a little to let go but that I’m never wearing (so I can turn the money into new things I probably won’t wear) They all are barely (or not even) used which is why I'm selling (that and I found two more things I want and New Year Resolution etc etc). I don’t need this to move quickly so I won’t be accepting offers; I’m just trying to avoid the Mercari percentage hit if possible!
Dryasiulia on fragrantica and basenotes and I'm the only Lira up on Mercari. Note several lovely people bought from my other posts and their packages are all still in transit. I ship as fast as possible — because selling stresses me out. TL;DR G&S is absolutely fine, just add the fee.
Prices include CONUS shipping and I ship next business day (faster on Fridays)
Xerjoff Lira see fill level (right below the O). Not quite full presentation, I used the box to store other boxes and lost the foam. Purchased this summer from Fragrance X — $215 (Cross posted on Mercari for a higher price)
~~Akro Awake** never sprayed. I have a 5ml and loved it so I bought a bottle. It’s been half a year and I’ve barely used the 5ml. Purchased from Luckyscent this summer. $140 ~\~ SOLD
Guerlain Spiritueuse Double Vanille sprayed less than 10 times. Same scenario as Awake. This was purchased directly from Guerlain and includes complete online boutique presentation. $235. (The presentation is expensive to ship, if you are only interested in the bottle securely packed in a bubble envelope I will do $225)
Frapin 1270 - sprayed less than 5 times. I was trying to find an unmarked decant and was “confident” enough to blind buy; I was wrong~ (it was back to black FWIW). Purchased from MaxAroma $130
**Any of these will get the 20-25ml sound of a ricochet decant from the previous post free if you ask~ FCFS
Also still available from previous post:
Vaniglia del Madagascar - i Profumi di Firenze - 50ml with box - sprayed less than 5 times (Lovely creamy vanilla - smells kind of like vanilla ice milk. Lily of the valley note is too soapy for me)- $80
Serge Lutens Vetiver Oriental Eau De Parfum - Full Presentation - 50ml Sprayed less than 5 times newer bottle batch code 91141LM (extra hoppy chocolate hay bale. Nice but a little too traditionally masculine for me) — $45 SOLD

Review of The Almost Complete Collection by Etat Libre d'Orange

Hi everyone! Now that I'm working fully from home (my new position is also a WFH even if COVID never happened) I've decided to start dipping my toes into testing out fragrances that I normally would never get the chance to. I have always been intrigued by the ELDO packaging and notes, so I decided to order "The Almost Complete Collection" from their website. For 40USD I received 20 2ml spray vials of their best sellers, a pretty good deal considering their samples go for 4USD. Below are my reviews of each scent (this is my first time reviewing scents, and I'm enjoying a few brunch beverages while typing so apologies in advance).

THE ALMOST COMPLETE COLLECTION:

TL;DR: Overall I was rather disappointed. A lot of these scents lasted no more than 4 hours max, which I wasn't expecting for a house that boasts about creativity and standing out. I'm so glad I got to sample this. Based on notes alone I would have blind bought Fat Electrian and Divin' Enfant, my two least favorite after all my testing. I'm sure this house is a favorite of quiet a few fragheads but for me I was wanting more, but not more of what they were actually offering.

EDIT: Thank you for the gold! To put this review into perspective for a few, I am 24F and it has rather chilly here for the past few weeks so some might smell better to me with different climate.

Beginner reviewing 28 fragrance samples from Fragrant World Shop + 7 pre-owned

For start, I'm completely new to fragrances but it quickly became my hobby and I ordered lots of samples.
Shipping from Fragrance World Shop was quiet long (about 3-4 weeks due to Covid transportation restrictions) but all the juice is original from what I can tell and the sprayers are so-so.
Note that sometimes I'm gonna give Avon higher rating due to the fact that they're very affordable, I don't find Avon's Magnolia En Fleurs better than Thierry Mugler Pure Malt for example (yeah I realize they're not even the same category of a frag). It just means it's great fragrance for the price. If I rated it high, it probably means it's worth getting because it smells great and it's cheap (according to me).

ME

I am 27 years old male, introverted personality and my favorite fragrances right before testing new decants are Encre Noire (due to its originality and dry down) and Banana Republic 78 Vintage Green due to very original fresh scent which I never smelled before. What I also semi-blind bought but then disliked is Avon Attraction One Intense (Avon catalogue page smelled like La Nuit De L'Homme, Attraction One Intense is much more orange blossomy than tester page actually smelled like). I also own Avon Mesmerize Black For Him which I just like, It's actually too strong smelling for my taste. Mesmerize Black is PR One Million clone. It's actually great performer and value at 8€. I also liked Montale Black Aoud (decant) as a gothic Dracula-like smelling fragrance. Its downfall for me is that it's actually too damn strong. Just keeps getting stronger and stronger until I have to wash it off my hand because it becomes cloying. Only freshy in my collection is Banana Republic 78 Vintage Green which I had no chance of wearing yet during the summer. I blind bought it but do not regret the purchase.

ALREADY OWNED FRAGRANCES REVIEW:

Lalique Encre Noire
This fragrance screams EARTH. It also has one of the best smelling sprayer nozzles (if that's the right word - sorry English is not my first language) which means it has amazing drydown. The fragrance is quite simple, it opens up with cypress, then turns into a very damp, wet roots which is vetiver. This middle vetiver phase is also the worst part of the fragrance to my nose, It's just not pleasing to me. However, after about 40 minutes you get this beautiful cashmere wood and musk which are the most beautiful parts of this fragrance to my nose. It is dark, elegant, sophisticated, I really get goosebumps smelling this fragrance after long time. This fragrance to me is a vampire sleeping in a coffin in the middle of a damp cypress forest. It really feels like a gothic fragrance. I love it but it's not perfect due to the middle which I dislike.
8/10
Avon Attraction One Intense
I feel tricked by Avon to be honest. I honestly think they spray La Nuit De L'Homme over catalogue pages for this fragrance because that is what the page smelled like. Instead, this fragrance is very strong on orange blossom, cardamom and coffee. Fragrance opens up with cardamom and bergamot. In the middle I get very strong orange blossom mixed with vanilla and coffee. It dries down into vanilla and sandalwood. I don't know what's going on with Fragrantica but they removed orange blossom note from the breakdown but it's very obviously the strongest player in this. This fragrance is actually performance beast and lasts for a long time, don't buy if you don't like cloying fragrances which you'll smell at every second. I don't think this is a bad date night fragrance at all and it's very unisex, it's just not for me since I don't enjoy strong orange fragrances. Gotta give this one credit where credit is due, I think that this would still work well as a dating fragrance. This one cost me 15€.
6/10
Avon Mesmerize Black For Him
In short, a very cheap fragrance (8€) which smells like a more sour and peppery Armani Code Profumo. Definitely worse smelling than AC Profumo but still a great cheapie if you are into Paco Rabanne One Million or AC Profumo sweet fragrances. Performance is average to good. For me it's actually too cloying so I just not really use it. Only reason this has higher rating than Armani Code Profumo is because it's cheaper and easy to buy, AC Profumo is actually a better fragrance.
6.5/10
Banana Republic 78 Vintage Green
It's a very pleasant cheap green fragrance which smells almost niche. It opens up with bergamot, mandarin and green leaves. You can actually dissect this fragrance very well, it's very well layered. In the middle I'm getting jasmine, green tea and fig. What I'm getting in the late drydown is cedar. Longevity and performance are average. This is a nice substitute to freshies although performance could be better.
8/10
Montale Black Aoud
I got a sample of this because I got told it smells like Dracula and I have to agree, I really think this is how Dracula would smell like, although this also reminded me of the perfumes old women would wear. This one was a grower for me, a strong rose / oud fragrance with dark twist. This one last forever and after dry down it became even stronger to the point it got cloying and I had to wash it down. Otherwise I really like this one, just wish it was weaker.
8/10

TESTING MOTHER'S AVON FRAGRANCES (FROM MEMORY):

Avon Magnolia en Fleurs
This one is by perfumer Maurice Roucel. Magnolia en Fleurs is a very beautiful 30+ women fragrance with a soothing quality and great bang for your buck since It's from Avon. I have no idea about longevity but I liked it as a man. It's an soft, elegant, relaxing magnolia based fragrance which I recommend.
9/10
Avon Marriage of Jasmine & Tuberose
I like this one as well, but it's very obviously 45+ fragrance or you could use it for marriage. As the name says it's Jasmine and Tuberose fragrance.
7.75/10

DECANT REVIEWS:

Zoologist Squid
Easiest way for me to describe this is that it smells like elegant Boswellia Carterii eteric oil (frankincense), while Boswellia Carterii smells sweet, Squid turns that sweetness into more elegant and "muted approach". Think Encre Noir drydown type of dark and elegant. Putting my nose to the hand reveals very slightly fishy scent which I'm assuming is Ambergris. Smelling my jar of sea salt, I'm definitely getting lots of sea salt in Squid as well. Squid is all about the incense and salt to my nose. For me it was interesting but was expecting to be more mind blown. Definitely Unisex, to me leans slightly feminine. This fragrance doesn't develop much from first spray to the drydown. After 5 hours it does however start to smell like catholic church censer frankincense. Good and different fragrance but I wouldn't actually buy it for myself due to price. Would love to find a cheaper similar smelling alternative.
8/10
Creed Aventus (Batch 20B11N)
What I was getting right after initial spray was grapefruit and strong zingy bergamot. Mind you, my nose sucks but why the hell does this smell like less sweet Banana Republic 78 Vintage Green minus the fig? I can tell right away that this is a dumb reach for men but it's very boring to me. It does however give that professional vibe. Would I pay this much for a bottle of this? Hell no, not when Green Vintage that I own costs only 30€ and smells very similar. It's honestly nothing special to me and rather boring. On my skin it just doesn't develop into anything and stays the same all the time. After 24 hours it weirdly started smelling like ham with some orange on top and I had to wash it off.
6.25/10
Xerjoff Naxos
Wow, this is first time smelling a tobacco fragrance and I'm positively surprised since I was expecting more of a cigarette smoke type of thing. Naxos surely brings back memories, someone in my family must have worn tobacco fragrances in the past. I have to say that this one is very difficult to figure out for my noob nose but this is what I've got. I get a lot of tobacco, honey, vanilla. I didn't really get that Bergamot or Citrus smell on initial spray which is weird. I found this one not to develop much on me, but it has strong performance and sillage, you probably need just 1 or 2 sprays. This smells like an really elegant, refined tobacco without any harshness. I'd definitely pick this over Aventus for office wear. Very well balanced fragrance which most people will like. Unisex, I know that most people say that it leans masculine but to me it leans more feminine.
9/10
YVS - La Nuit de L'Homme
I swear to god that this is what Avon sprays Attraction One Intense (black packaging) catalogue page with. This is how the Avon page smelled like, but when I recieved Attraction One Intense it smelled different and way too strong in a bad way (too much orange blossom). As you can tell I love LNdL because this is what I thought Avon perfume would smell like when I ordered it. My only gripe with LNdL is that performance is quiet bad. After one hour the performance already sucks. Smell is 9/10, performance is 3/10. I'd buy it if performance didn't suck so much. I still prefer it over Aventus if I apply more sprays. After 5 hours I'm not smelling it anymore. Does anyone know same smelling alternative that actually lasts? Definitely not buying this one, performance sucks too much, I'd however consider buying a good clone.
8.5/10
MMM By The Fireplace
I wasn't expecting it to smell like this, I was expecting some smokiness but I get more of a bubblegummy sweetness, less chestnut, more marshmallow. I was kinda disappointed that it's not more smokey and woody. You do get some of the burned wood but marshmallow like smell is more overpowering . It doesn't smell bad though, just wouldn't wear it as a man. Performance seems to be average.
7/10
Amouage Interlude Man
This one is difficult for me to explain due to my limited nose. Looking at Fragrantica list I'm definitely getting oregano and pepper on top, incense in the middle, sweetness from amber and some sort of frankincense. This is way too strong for my personal taste, it reminds me of something grandpa would wear, I definitely get this old person and spice drawer association. I can tell off the bat that this will have strong performance. Maybe this spicy style is not for me... This is NOT a bad fragrance if you're into spicy and middle eastern ones, if you guys like this sorts of fragrances then you'd definitely rate it much higher than me.
5/10
Terre d' Hermes EDT
I was told I'd love this one as Encre Noire fan. Well let's see - In the top I'm getting mandarin and grapefruit (i thought grapefruit was vetiver at first). To get the pepper in the middle which is mentioned on Fragrantica, I really have to sniff close to the hand. I feel like after 15 minutes, the middle is strong mandarin and some pepper. 4 hours later my amateur nose gets mainly mandarin mixed with some cedar and pepper. This fragrance made me realize that i'm really not into orangey frags too much. I do however think that this is better than Aventus for office.
6.75/10
Amouage Jubilation XXV
I know that this is very complex fragrance but I can sum it up in 3 words = Date Palm Fruit. Yes it really smells like that and I hate date palm fruit unfortunately. Right off the bat, this fragrance sits close to the skin and you won't see it project much. I sprayed it twice on my hand and it still feels weak. I find Interlude Man more interesting even though I don't like it either - let's not even mention how much stronger Interlude Man is. If I do try to break this frag down - I am getting some blackberry in the top, honey and cinnamon in the middle and some sort of frankincense in the bottom. After 5 hours i'm getting frankincense, honey. Sorry, this DNA is not for me.
4/10
L'Occitane Eau Des Baux
Honestly, I returned twice to this fragrance. I liked it first time on paper but disliked it the second time wearing it. Overall it's a very safe fragrance but not for me. Fragrance opens up with cardamom and cypress but quickly shows us the drydown which is tonka bean and vanilla. The fragrance doesn't develop much. For me this mixture of cardamom, cypress and vanilla is just too cloying and makes me just slightly sick, especially in a closed space with no fresh air. Performance and longevity are average.
6.5/10
Serge Lutens Chergui
Right off the bat I'm getting tobacco, honey, hay - the hay is quite noticable in this one together with tobacco. Smelling this in first 10 minutes, it almost has kind of a fresh quality to it, like if you were smelling mint but it's tobacco - you feel that freshness feeling in the back of your nose. I don't really know how other notes in this fragrance smell by itself so my knowledge is limited. I did however hear that sandalwood smells very sexy so I'm guessing sandalwood is giving this frag this sexy vibe underneath. The frag itsef has almost lipstick quality to it if that makes sense, it's giving me kinda powdery feeling. This is really, good but I don't think it's better than Naxos for me scent wise. I also do think that Chergui is much more feminine leaning than Naxos. This one seems to be a beast longevity wise because It's getting more and more loud in first 30 minutes. I recommend this one for women specifically although men could rock it as well with right attire. I like it, but it becomes too cloying over time. Had to wash it off after 2 hours. It gets my recommendation if you can handle strong fragrances.
7.75/10
Creed Green Irish Tweed
First thing I thought when I smelled this is "this is so old school". This is something that's more appropriate for a man above the age of 40. This is one of the first frags I tested that actually gives me the shower gel vibe that everyone talks about in fragrances. Citrus on top (lemon verbena) gives this a nice fresh vibe but at the same time, the iris and violet leaf make it more grounded and old school, more appropriate for middle aged folks. I'd call this one fresh and classy. I'd rock it more with a suit. If you are under 40 you can still rock it with a suit in my opinion. It's a formal fragrance to me. Sillage and projection are average. Not bad for a freshie but I really wouldn't pay so much for shower gel fragrance when you can buy just some cheap one in supermarket and smell similar...
7.25/10
Mugler Pure Malt
Wow, I think I love this one just as much as Xerjoff Naxos, it's a sexy one. This one is hard for my nose to understand but I'm definitely getting those "fruity notes" on the top, whiskey and coffee in the middle and mostly vanilla and amber in the drydown. I'll have to do the battle between Naxos and this one later to see who comes on top for me. This one is definitely a buy for me.
9/10
Tom Ford Oud Wood
Bitter, classic, commanding - this is what I'd describe this fragrance as. This is first time I'm clearly smelling Oud and feels like a good benchmark for what it smells like. I definitely smelled oud before and just didn't know it. This is what I imagine someone above 50 would wear. I get agarwood, cardamom, pepper and some vetiver. I don't think it's appropriate for someone around my age. I felt like I smelled this or something similar around uncles in my life. Not too big of a fan of this one, I washed it off after 2 hours, I don't like it.
4/10
Creed Royal Oud
This is sweeter take on Oud compared to TF Oud Wood. This one has kind of a fresh forest vibe added to the oud recipe. I get bergamot, pepper, cedar, oud. Still not a fan, I prefer it over Oud Wood but I still wouldn't wear it. I washed it off after 2 hours, I don't like it.
5.5/10
Dior Fahrenheit Le Parfum
I was hyped to test this one due to its uniqueness. I'm definitely getting suede and licorice on top, only slight mandarine. In the middle I get rum - mostly felt in the back of the nose and STRONG violet leaf. This one weirdly comes off fresh in a bitter way. Drydown smells like someone mowing a lawn far away with some petroleum in the air (unfortunately not the sweet gas station type of petroleum I was expecting). Even closer, this smells like how your clothes would smell after mowing the lawn outside. Ehhh... not really a fan unfortunately but really interesting. Definitely 30+ fragrance.
6/10
John Varvatos Dark Rebel Rider
This one is way too complex for my nose but I'll try. I get dark leather, resin, incense, probably some sort of spices. I get some booze like rum. It really smells like if you'd coat the burning tire smoke with some incense sweetness. This one's a badass. The more it develops the better it gets. Definitely a leather jacket fragrance. I'm still thinking if I'd actually get this one, it's kinda nice but i'm still not sure... Will need to re-apply some other day.
7.25/10
Tom Ford Noir Extreme
Wow this one is heavenly if you're standing outside in the cold breeze and you get a whiff - it kinda magically lifts the senses. On top you get a straight blast of very sensual rose and just a pinch of cardamom. When the fragrance goes towards mid it turns into a less harsh orange blossomy Avon Attraction One Intense (I hate that one because orange blossom is WAY too strong there). You start getting some jasmine, vanilla and amber as well as it goes towards drydown. 3 hours later it smells like vanilla. Longevity is kinda bad to be honest. Overall, this is a very sensual rose fragrance for men but can be also worn by women easily. Goths will love this one.
8.75/10
Creed Silver Mountain Water
Boring... It's a smell you smell in every store and in every product. I don't understand why anyone would buy a bottle of this in 2020, you'll smell like any wet wipe. Just no.
3/10
Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Extreme
Alright so this one smells similar to one of the previous ones I've tested. I think it's similar to either Xerjoff Naxos or Pure Malt. I'll have to test those 3 together to come to a conclusion on which one to get. From my memory, I feel like Pure Malt had more depth than this and Naxos was way more elegant and less harsh. I'll compare them side by side. This one by itself is vanilla, lavender heavy with some spices coming through. I definitely prefer it over Chergui.
8/10
Narciso Rodriguez For Him
Yep, Fragrantica comments are quite accurate. This totally smells like vegetables (I think cauliflower) and wet sidewalk. Won't even try to dissect this one. I don't like it, it's bitter, cold. If you look for something just as dark, manly and unique, Encre Noire smells much better and actually does this kind of fragrance vibe much better. For Him is kinda similar to Dior Fahrenheit. With Dior Fahrenheit I at least like it from time to time, I just dislike this one all the time wearing it. Honestly I wouldn't wear this even as a goth because it just smells bad.
4/10
Comme des Garcons Series 3 Incense: Avignon
Very good recreation of catholic church censer incense. If you've been to church you know this smell. Not exactly wearable in public unless you want to smell like church or work at a church. It's good if you just want to feel cozy at home. On moments it smells like Coca Cola inspired drink from my country.
8/10
Dior Homme Intense (2011)
This one does smell like make-up bag. There is a very strong iris note. I find this appropriate for any suited up man. It's very unoffensive and safe. For me it's just tad too boring and not something i'd ever make my signature. Nice fragrance though.
7/10
D&G The One EDP
Smelled it millions times before without even knowing it. Just boring and I hate amber based fragrances. I get coriander more than grapefruit in top. Ginger in the middle and strong amber in drydown. I'd actually prefer it to be heavier on tobacco. I wouldn't call it bad, just overdone and boring. Longevity and sillage are quite good for me.
7/10
Guerlain L'Homme Ideal EDP
I like it less scent wise than D&G The One, longevity is also worse. Once again, this kind of frags are just plain boring to me. Strong almond in the top, cherry and vanilla in the middle, it dries down into leather and cherry. I do however feel that I need to give Guerlain props for trying to make a different clubbing scent. It's decent as long as it lasts.
6.5/10
Armani Code Profumo
You know what, Avon's Mesmerize Black For Him could actually be inspired by this one because I never actually smelled One Million by PR. They are both tonka bean, nutmeg heavy fragrances although Mesmerize Black stings much more to the nose after first spray due to pink pepper. Code Profumo is still a clubbing fragrance but just much more well rounded one without harsh edges. Do I like it overall? Not really. Tonka Bean and amber fragrances are just too sweet for my taste unfortunately. I wouldn't wash it off if it was offered to me (If I lacked a fragrance) but I'd also never buy it. I prefer The One over this one.
6/10
Acqua Di Gio Profumo
Fragrance opens up with what I thought was mandarin but was actually bergamot and sea notes. I think that this fragrance is a great fragrance to test, just because it teaches you what that note that every fresh shower gel has is. It's "sea notes" according to Fragrantica. So, so far I'm getting sea notes, bergamot, rosemary. The drydown smells very fresh bergamot fruity but I'm not really percieving the incense a lot, it's very slight. The sea notes are much more noticable in drydown. 3 hours after spraying the fragrance, the fragrance holds strong and is almost cloying to me. Strong sea notes and patchouli, no incense. This fragrance is very 40+ to me personally, maybe it's because my father wore all these colognes which were fakes of probably original ADG (he never cared what he wore as long as it smelled fresh). It really reminds me of him. It's a good fresh fragrance, although I'd pick a more original, darker and newer DNA for me personally.
7/10
Dior Sauvage EDT
Fragrance opens up with very smooth juicy-like bergamot and pepper. After 10 minutes I can tell that this is a very synthetic fragrance. 15 minutes later you get much more pink pepper which comes off even more sharp. I don't really get any lavender from this like Fragrantica says. I do however get strong ambroxan in the drydown. Projection is very good, I constantly get whiffs of this in the air. Overall it's nice but actually lacks character and not something I would get.
7/10

I think my buys are going to be Thierry Mugler Pure Malt as a going out with friends fragrance and Tom Ford Noir Extreme clone (original's too expensive for me) as a going out with girlfriend fragrance. I might get a clone of La Nuit De L'Homme because original's performance sucks real bad. I really liked Zoologist Squid as well and might get another sample down the road. Right now I have Encre Noire A L'Extreme on the way, will review it soon.
If you have any questions, ask away.

guerlain vetiver smells like video

A great soapy, green, clean, vetiver. Ladies and gentleman, if ya wanna know what vetiver smells like, look no further. Guerlain Vetiver is about as "vetiver" as you're gonna get, while still staying fresh and clean. This stuff is an instant classic. Sophisticated, and still very contemporary. Created in 1959, Vétiver is the first olfactory creation by Jean-Paul Guerlain. It evokes the duality of nature: freshness and warmth, harmony and disorder. The exhalations of the earth after the rain, the fresh air of early morning, swirls of tobacco mixed with spices... What Does Vetiver Smell Like? The fragrance is closely related to other fragrant grasses such as lemongrass and citronella. It is a complex earthy, woody scent which has been valued for its aroma since ancient times. The scent has often been compared to the sharp smell of uncut grass on a warm day. What it smells like: Vetiver is mainly cultivated for its fragrant essential oil which is distilled from its roots that are 18 to 24 months old. Vetiver oil, which is amber brown and rather thick, is a complex oil containing over 100 identified components. The odor of vetiver oil is described as deep, sweet, woody, smoky and earthy. Vetiver is a species of grass and smells like grass! Tho for Earth’s terra only! Guerlain’s take on vetiver is quite complex. It opens with a burst of citruses, then that distinct smell of freshly cut grass done at dawn (Diwata and Engkanto who?!) and the dry down smells like expensive soap! Vetiver from different places smells totally different. Haitian vetiver (probably what they used in the aforemention Guerlain) is bright and citrusy. Javanese (Indonesian) vetiver is smoky, and Indian vetiver is sweet and slightly nutty. (The harvest affects the scent too: if they harvest the roots to early, the oil smells green and slightly To create Vetiver, it is said Jean-Paul Guerlain was inspired by the scent of the gardener, the smell of tobacco and soil. The beginning of the fragrance is the fresh morning fog that engulfs the countryside, only to lift with the sun as it rises. Those, like yours truly, obsessed with vetiver, might want to try every and eventually own almost every vetiver fragrance ever produced. And yet one’s need for vetiver can easily be satisfied by Guerlain’s Vetiver.Created in 1959, this scent showcases all the best features of vetiver, the aromatic verdancy, the fragrant rootiness [the name for vetiver in Java is akar wangi, “fragrant root Vetiver is a grass that grows native to Haiti, India, and Indonesia. Guerlain Vetiver smells of a very green Haitian vetiver grass mixed with tobacco and a lot of woody notes. It smells really like a walk in a forest, in a fresh but somewhat dark style that evokes masculinity. Guerlain’s is known as a benchmark vetiver; what you smell to teach your nose about these indispensible grassroots. Once you learn to recognize that distinctive vetiver scent (it smells like nothing else) you will smell traces of it everywhere – it appears in the base of nearly all western fragrances.
