A story about the Dot Com bubble, some profit taking, exit strategies and money vs capital

Bot hates me so here is a link
In the late 90's we had a similar Tech/Digital stock rally (this is not nearly as bad though, so chill, companies are actually destroying the estimates and profits are strong).
Back then it was web page development and internet providers, now it's mainly electric vehicles and some parts of tech.
“St0nks” were only going up, up and up. You heard things like - Dude, its a new economy, this is the new normal. This is the future, you can't use old models to define value. Die all boomers and burn traditional stocks (ok I might be exaggerating on this one).
Anyway, I was a finance major at a prominent university in London, UK. I was destined for greatness and a trainee spot at Deutsche Bank's analyst desk. My friend - let's call him Eli, because his name was actually Eli - was a stock genius.
Everybody is a genious in a bull market, you put some money in to a company in IT and BAM, the new Buffett (or Cathie).
Eli was good for about 350kUSD at one point, not bad for a student. Or I should say, 350kUSD nominal value in stocks. Because, its not money until you sell. Eli learned the hard way.
The "dip" came. Eli figured "st0nks only go up" - I'm gonna "buy the dip". The dip became a slide, then a vortex and finally evolving in to a capital sucking black hole (not an anus ok).
Eli bought and bought, he also had a debt position of about 25% of his portfolio. This increased to 50%. The bank called, Hey Eli - that collateral isn't so hot anymore, pay up dude. Eli paid up. One year later he had -13kUSD on his account for accrued interest rates and trading fees.
So what's there to learn. Well, depends on how risk averse you are, but I see a lot of new investors that ask about when and how to take home profits. There is no rule or best practice, but here's at least an strategy that I'm using myself.
  1. I don't let a stock grow beyond 20% of my portolio, if it does I automatically start scaling back profits and weight to other, new opportunities.
Compound that interest, bitch.
  1. I always keep a 10-15% cash position so I can take advantage on dips or other opportunities. This capital has had a ridiculous payback over the years. This is not money, this is capital. I have a savings account with 3 months salary. That’s money.
  2. For every 20% growth I take home for example 20% of the profit. So in G-ME for example I started buying early and by $90 I only had profits invested. By 300 I had sold about 2/3 and on the way down I dropped the last stocks at 115.
So let’s say a stock grows from 100 to 120. I take back 4. Then it goes to 140, I take back another 8 so now I have taken 12 total.
Obviously there is some flexibility here, but use it for inspiration. For more secure stocks you may wanna hold on more and longer, but for me it’s a lot about maintaining that cash position.
So what do I do with my profits? Well, I do a few things.
  1. I reinvest them in to other stocks, so I make sure I have a short list of alternatives at all times. For example, my G-ME winnings (yes it was a casino) paid for 300 PayPal stocks at $231. They’re now up 15%.
Compound that interest, bitch.
  1. I put them in the cash position so I can be opportunistic (but still max 15%). Life saver in March, pure rocket fuel baby.
  2. I buy my wife or kids presents, I get a nice Rolex or refurbish the house. I turn it in to money. I have money so I can spend it, use it.
Moral of the story or TLDR;
Make money, you probably won't see another opportunity like the one of the past 6-10 months. Its not coming back for a while.
Don't step out of the market, pick your stocks wisely, keep some cash to pounce on some disappointing earning calls or dips and remember: IT IS NOT MONEY UNTIL YOU SELL.
Disclaimer 2: I was a licensed financial advisor as in a securities analyst, but do your own research. This is not advice, it’s inspiration.
PS Eli went on to be a very successful entrepreneur and has started a few companies. I believe one of them is going to IPO soon DS
Edit: clarified advisor part
Edit 2: this completely blew up, thanks for all the awards and upvotes but spend the money on stocks instead!

"I think I've lived long enough to see competitive Counter-Strike as we know it, kill itself." Summary of Richard Lewis' stream (Long)

I want to preface that the contents of this post is for informational purposes. I do not condone or approve of any harassments or witch-hunting or the attacking of anybody.

Richard Lewis recently did a stream talking about the terrible state of CS esports and I thought it was an important stream anyone who cares about the CS community should listen to.
Vod Link here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/830415547
I realize it is 3 hours long so I took it upon myself to create a list of interesting points from the stream so you don't have to listen to the whole thing, although I still encourage you to do so if you can.
I know this post is still long but probably easier to digest, especially in parts.
Here is a link to my raw notes if you for some reason want to read through this which includes some omitted stuff. It's in chronological order of things said in the stream and has some time stamps. https://pastebin.com/6QWTLr8T

Intro

CSPPA - Counter-Strike Professional Players' Association

"Who does this union really fucking serve?"

ESIC - Esports Integrity Commission

"They have been put in an impossible position."

Stream Sniping

"They're all at it in the online era, they're all at it, they're all cheating, they're all using exploits, probably that see through smoke bug got used a bunch of times"

Match Fixing

"How many years have we let our scene be fucking pillaged by these greedy cunts?" "We just let it happen."

North America

"Everyone in NA has left we've lost a continents worth of support during this pandemic and Valve haven't said a fucking word."

Talent

"TO's have treated CS talent like absolute human garbage for years now."

Valve

"Anything that Riot does, is better than Valve's inaction"

Closing Statements

"We've peaked. If we want to sustain and exist, now is the time to figure it out. No esports lasts as long as this, we've already done 8 years. We've already broke the records. We have got to figure out a way to coexist and drive the negative forces out and we need to do it as a collective and we're not doing that."

Going 0 - 2 in draft feels like loosing 1 weeks salary at a casino

Feels so bad lol.. it's like your 1 week of savings going down the drain for an F2P player.. i am not a terrible limited player, i have done a couple of 7 - 0s and im not the best player either.. but to improve my skills i have to play a lot of limited, and to play limited i have to sink in 5k every week which rougly takes me a week to save up..
apart from grinding constructed event draft is the one thing i'm looking forward to every time i get the chance..

i guess i hope WOTC puts in an option for a phantom draft or at least a solitaire mode to test what you have built in draft 1st.

Public Service Announcement for those coming off big wins - Take a pause to reset!

Disclaimer - I am not telling you to sell if you are confident in your DD and Positions. This is general advice I don't see in WSB.
Fellow WSBers,
I felt the need to write this to the collective group. Many of you have added a zero or more to your overall NET WORTH in the last couple months, weeks or days. Congratulations, that is awesome. I am truly happy for you and wanted to offer some advice.

These are the thoughts of a dad and exactly what I would tell my sons.
Saw this too - https://www.cnbc.com/2021/01/29/gamestop-short-sellers-are-still-not-surrendering-despite-nearly-20-billion-in-losses-this-year.html. We are winning and short haven't learned. We have a whole new group to fleece.
Update - 1/30 - just bought a Gamestop Exclusive Funko Marvel Street Art Captain America and added Power Up/Game Informer. Save $5 and get $5 a month. Should help boost revenue going into Earnings. May buy the other 6 to memorialize the big win.

(23M)Gambling no more and finally getting it together.

"I just wanted to share my story here in Reddit because I kinda kept this story to myself and if I tell this to my friends, they probably wouldn't believe me anyway. But I just wanted to tell someone who's having the same problem that I had before. It's kind of a long story so don't read it if you don't wanna read long stories. I needed to tell a back story first so it's easy to understand what I'm going to tell.
So, I'm from Winnipeg. So here's how it all started. I ran away from my parents with only $2500 on TFSA and $800 on my Chequing account Also like ($1000 worth of bitcoins I think??? or like a year later I don't remember the timeline anymore) when I was 18, 5 years ago. Life was more or less great. I was working 30-38 hours a week at Walmart with barely above minimum wage salary. For some reason, I still managed to save money with low salary, renting a room and owning a car and paying all my bills at the same tome. I even brought myself to college and got a Legal Assistant Degree while still working after school and weekends to pay my bills. But, after my internship. The place I did my internship didn't want to take me because I kinda fell asleep in the court room on the hearing beside the judge (Cos I was tired from working and going to school every time). It kinda got hard for me to get a job in that field cos I didn't have any work experience in that field, but I didn't want to do internship cos I didn't want to work for free.
Around 19-20 years of age, I just decided to find any job to make more money. I got into a production company as a general labourer. Working two jobs and with lots of money. I just didn't know what to do with all that money. It was so easy for me to make money that I thought I could just outspend what I wanted to spend my money on. So, I just started to spend my money playing in Casinos. Coincidentally, 1 month after I was working two jobs. I won $1250 on a $50 sidebet on Pai Gow Poker and then won another $2500 on $50 side bet the week after. That's when I started to ruin my finances. I would go into Casinos like almost every week. I was making like $1200 biweekly after taxes and would spend all my salary, go through all my savings, borrow from friends, and maxing out my credit cards. Hell, I even started talking to my parents again just to borrow money from them so I can just gamble more when I spend all my salary from gambling.
I even started working 3 jobs. Working 60-70 hours but I would spend all that money from gambling. Sometimes, my gas would almost run out or I wouldn't even eat sometimes cos I already gambled all my money in Casino. So basically I was gambling for a 2-4 years. I lost like around $40k in total. I was even paying more on NSFs, Credit card interest than necessities sometimes cos I'd actually go to the casinos right after I get my paycheques. I was always stressed that time. I wouldn't know what to do. Couldn't sleep properly at night sometimes, being paranoid, thinking how can I pay my debts, when to eat next time, and all other things. Tough times.
Then, Covid happened last year. I quit on my full time job like a month before covid got serious (bad timing I know) because I was always late and I got laid off at my part time job because of lack of customers due to Covid Scare. Luckily, the Casinos closed down too. Then, I got a job at a pork processing company as a SliceMachine Operator. So, I started to save a lot of money which allowed me to start paying off my credit card debts , student loans, late payments, debts to friends.
Unfortunately, Casinos opened again for like almost a month and I gambled and lost around $3000 which like my savings at the time. Thankfully, they closed down again. But now, most of my debts are paid off except for like a couple hundreds in Credit card, student loans, and car loan which are low interest so I'm not in a rush to pay them anymore.
Now, I've learned my lesson and I started investing my saved money and trying to be financially responsible once again. To be honest, If I can take anything back from the past. I wouldn't even want to get the money that I've lost in the Casinos. I would just want to get back the time when I was at (19-22) where I could've use those time to spend it with my friends and/or travel and vacations. Instead of wasting my time chasing my losses."
P.S. sorry, I'm new in reddit. My first post actually, don't know how to format these things properly lol

Salary not at minimum for California state at Indian Casino

I work at an Indian casino in California which is located on tribal land. I’m not too keen on sovereign laws, but something was brought to my attention the other day about minimum salary wage. I am an exempt employee, and I do not earn overtime for any work over 80 hours.
The minimum wage for California is $12/hr for businesses with over 26 employees, which is what the majority of the workers in my department are earning. I had no idea there was a minimum for exempt salary employees until it was brought up to me by someone outside of my place of work.
Apparently an exempt salary employee should make at least twice the amount of the state minimum wage worker in Ca. I only make $35k which equals to a little under $17/hour. Can someone please tell me if this is correct, and if so, are sovereign lands exempt from that law? If not, how can I proceed with this information? Apologies for bad formatting, I am on mobile.

The GUH Daily Recap of 02/02

Don't expect this to be a daily thing, I put daily, but I really meant news of the day. Also, not financial advice.

Quick major news

What to look for tomorrow

My thoughts

New retail money and its consequences on the overall market
This whole squeezy thing made a lot of new people aware of the stock market. Most made money. I therefore predict that there's going to be a lot of new money in the market. That leads to 2 things :
The first point is rather obvious in my opinion but the second one needs a little bit of explaining. It's based on the Boredom Markets Hypothesis from Matt Levine. For short : people are bored, people want fun, people see the stock market as a fun casino, people trade.
Add to those 2 points the fact that retail investors actually beat index funds during the first quarantine in 2020. This is a recipe for success for the overall market :
  1. Retail investors are bored and trade fun stocks.
  2. Retail investors actually made money.
  3. They get their jobs back and they no longer have time to follow the market.
  4. They put their money, earnings and salary into boring ETFs or blue chips stocks.
I've said basically this on this post about my 100k yolo. A little update on this : I really bought at the peak and after those great first days of the week, I barely broke even. So that sucks! Also, I might change for SPY calls as I think s&p500 will have a similar growth as Nasdaq but the SPY calls are giving better returns than Nasdaq calls for the same % change of the underlying.
Apple vs Facebook
So, hum... Facebook, with 96% of its users using the mobile app, decided to declare war against the biggest smartphone manufacturer? That's going to go well... To be fair, they don't have that much choice when the big smartphone manufacturer decides to make it very transparent what data you have access to and how much data you collect.
So, as more young people realize the extend of the data collected by Facebook, and since they're not really big fans of the app anyway, they will most probably stop using it for other more fun social medias. If they can't attract new young people, that's the death of Facebook app's growth.
Add to that more and more controversies on the whole Whatsapp-Facebook merge, more and more people more aware of alternative apps, and probably some regulations coming in this year or 2022, this is not great for Facebook at all.
But for Apple? How is Apple going down? Let's take the insane worst-case scenario for apple that Facebook stops support for Iphones. You think people will stop using Iphones just to have a social media that they've been using just as an addictive habit?
And for ther other apps in the Apple Store profiting of data collecting, I'm sure they know how lucrative the Apple market is as those customers that spend the most amount of money on phones will most likely spend the most amount of money on other things. Paid apps will do well. Ads there will do extremely well. They just need to be less shady about how they collect their data. And if you stop support for your Apple app just because Apple shows how you collect your users' data, this will not be very good PR for you my guy.
So yes, Facebook is in a lot of trouble and seems to be slowly going downhill but it's not a new trend. Apple is just the one hurting them the most at the moment. So my long-term thesis (2 or 3 years) is that Facebook will be hurt by this with a maximum upside of a stock price being flat and apple is going to do really great in the coming years.
Bye!

I love those people which came for quick buck

Those which bought high, sold low and now they are negative AF instead taking their toilet paper hands and getting the f out of here.
I came about 3/4 year ago. Lurking, being jealous of people throwing tens, or hundreds of thousands away on yolo plays, while my salary is 1500$ a month. I am 22 and I am currently at red 1032$. I have left 600$ from my 2 years of hard savings (bag of GME and 2 AAPL). Nobody will give me back that money here, no one gives as hit how much I fucked myself (did kinda a lot), even if that would be like lunch money for them. But I took the risk and now I am holding either to make buck, or sink with the ship and regret hopping in the casino.
Stop being mad because you bought lotto ticket, threw it away without scratching the last number on it. This sub was something I never experienced before, when I joined. But now its worse than my FB, or Instagram main page.
As far as I am aware, the posts I saw years back, this was always casino.
We will be at least bit smarter apes on next Tuesday, because on this GME there are actually some technicals.
Spamming does not help.
Hold, or if you can't take it, leave and hold.
Also to make this post interesting for the soft brains on here.

To People that Ardently Defend Tether

Why do you even gaf to defend the scummy iFinex and Tether? Why is it, that maxis in particular, but crypto peeps in general jump at the chance to defend them? Could it have something to do with the (obvious) intution that if Tether really did print $25 billion in unbacked casino chips, that perhaps much of this bull run was fueled by a fraud?
Of course, the alternative position is to simply dismiss Tether as being largely irrelevant, even if they are operating fraudulently. Irrelevant hmmm? Well then why is it that the significant majority volume done on even the large reputable exchanges, is in Tether?
Are yall really so dense as to not even entertain these ideas as possible? Given the evidence in front of us, it's difficult to come to any other conclusion that Tether and these exchanges using Tether, are largely up to no good, and fueling loads of scam coins, pump and dumps, and general fuckery. But I leave you with a quote:
It's difficult to convince a man of something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.

Is she being cheap or just frugal?

My wife is notoriously known for being the type of person who likes to save, and I don't think that's bad either. But hear me out. Here are some things that made me think that she is actually being cheap and not just frugal:
  1. She's been having back problems for months. And I have been asking her to get an x-ray. All those times, she refuses to go because "it'll cost money".
  2. We don't usually eat out, but when we do, she is very careful on where we should eat. She thinks $10/person is expensive.
  3. We have 2 separate accounts for our salary (which I initiated because I was told it will help our situation). However, what she said was, "Okay, your account will purely be savings. Don't touch anything there. All our expenses will come from mine." Which I think defeats the purpose since the reason I suggested that is so I'll have the independence to use my own money.
  4. I always need her "permission" whenever I buy something, even if it's as personal as a shaving cream. I have to go through all the talks like "do you really need it" and shit before we could get it.
  5. We went to a casino and he had .95 left, and she wanted to cash it out. She said she would give .5 so the cashier could give her $1 because she could use a dollar, apparently.
  6. She thinks that she's being responsible for her money (or our money) by computing every little dollar that we spend. And that honestly makes me feel uncomfortable.
PS We're both making good enough money to sustain us. We live comfortably, and I know we can travel if we want to. We're not in debt or anything too.
What do you all think?
I honestly would want her to go through counseling, but she said she doesn't need it because she is only doing what is right.
TL;DR I think my wife has some underspending habits that needs to be addressed. And they've been the cause of my frustrations lately. I honestly think she needs counseling, but she says she is just being responsible. What do you think?

[AMA] In 2016 I quit my 100K Salaried position to pursue my dream of opening up the world's first lootbox gambling casino. Today I was able to realize that dream. Ask me anything!

In 2012 I hit a rut in life and quit a promising degree at CDPR University to explore my dream of traveling the world. I used all my college savings and Bitcoin investments, and hiked all around the world (but only in English speaking countries). At one point I lost everything and got addicted to drugs or something. I like to call that part of my life "the Dark Souls of my life".
Actually that part is mostly a blank but I did end up in a high paying, super job where I was set for life. Through the ebb and flow of life and the Babbittry of my own existence, I gave it all up. I quit my job, divorced my wife, sold my kids to work in a Slavic cave producing Witcher games, and headed west to pursue my real dream.
Today that dream is realized. I've opened the first lootbox gambling casino and am happier than I've ever been gaining free publicity from angry gamer manchildren and making more cash than God from impulsive children. My casino offers lootbox gambling, skin gambling, weapon gambling, and token transfers of all kinds. Loot boxes? Supply crates? Fucking...loot crate boxes? Whatever it's called, we got it. A rose by any other name and all that. So please, come visit (unless you're a feeemale or a historically inaccurate person of color) and
ASK ME ANYTHING!
