My Thoughts After 100 Hours (SPOILER REVIEW)

I figured this was the better place to post a semi-review of the game, y'all seem more chill. I just finished the game, played as a Corpo, got the secret ending where I stormed the HQ with Johnny, and got The Sun ending, where you straight up rob a space casino.
I'll put the TL;DR here, for those of you who're just scrolling: the game is a masterpiece. One of the best I've played in years. CD tried to do a lot here, more than the Witcher, and while not everything stuck the landing, the hate this game is getting is ludicrously over the top. I don't mean to diss, but games like Fallout 76 and Anthem didn't get this kind of shit, and they deserved it 10X more in my opinion. Hey, at least this game doesn't have any damn time savers or Verizon themed pre order outfits.
I'm gonna get into my main points now, starting with the positives:
  1. The soundtrack. It's amazing, from the theme at the main menu to the combat music. the radio stations are all Preem too. There's a little of everything.
  2. The voice acting is really solid, I played a male V and he really sounded like Jon Bernthal and Frank Grillo mixed together. Keanu is of course Keanu. Something I also really enjoyed and I hope more games adopt, which I haven't seen mentioned, is people speak different languages. Like not every character speaks perfect English. There are Russians, Japanese, and Spanish gangs and they all speak their respective languages. I dug that, and it's easily explained cause you have translator tech.
  3. Similarly to something like Mafia 3, the face models are really out of this world. Character creation is pretty extensive too, I liked being able to give my V crossbones for eyes.
  4. Night City itself is drop dead gorgeous at times. When you're driving around North Oak, that long highway just outside town, the city is like something out of Blade Runner.
  5. Each district feels really unique, Pacifica and Heywood being favorites of mine. All the fixers have their own shtick, and the gangs are nice and varied. Padre and the Voodoo Boys are great.
  6. The combat is solid, and there are a lot of options for different play styles. I kind of opted for a jack of all trades type build, and had a lot of fun. Granted, there's a lot more systems then there need to be, but I'll get to that later.
  7. The story itself is gripping, I never lost interest, even when I was off doing side quests I was still thinking about a conversation I'd had with Johnny. Speaking of which--
  8. Johnny. I've seen this before, with Handsome Jack in Tales From the Borderlands and the Joker in Arkham Knight, but Cyberpunk really takes a new spin on it. Johnny doesn't just spout off random bullshit all the time--though he does sometimes and it's often great stuff, like him talking about his 'impressive cock'--but he does actively challenge you and get into real discussions with you. He's got a lot of layers that are fun to peel back, and he's a genuinely tragic character. Johnny is written beautifully.
  9. The rest of the cast is superb as well. Goro, who really broke my heart when in the ending phone calls he told me to 'Rot in Hell', even though I deserved it. But Julie, River, the guy that wants you to nail him to a cross--they all find a way to stand out.
  10. The mission design too I enjoyed, especially in the side gigs. You could be covertly infiltrating a penthouse looking for a priceless guitar one minute, to shooting up an underground nightclub the next. There's the cyber-psychos and all those NCPD crimes, and holy shit, reading those shards was straight up heartbreaking at times. There's story packed in everywhere of this game.
But I've blown the game enough now, time for some constructive criticism.
  1. Obviously, performance wise I think we're still a few patches away from being smooth sailing. I've had a few crashes, but mostly I have issues with my controls just freezing up, like not being able to jump or shoot while aiming.
  2. There's a disparity in the economy I find, and I haven't seen this mentioned yet, though I could be wrong. The rewards for certain quests, like the amount of credits you earn can be really low. The amount of EXP too. I think these need to be doubled at least, because 1,300 credits for a gig that I was told was 'Very Hard', doesn't check out. It's something to give thought to at least, because right now, unless you abuse the money cheat, getting cash early on can be a little tedious. There could be reward scaling too, based on your level or the area you're in.
  3. Combat wise, there are a lot of options, which is good, but at the end of the day blasting people with a revolver that does 1,200 damage is easiest. Melee weapons are fun, as are your cyber hacks, I just feel as though there needs to be more incentive to use them.
  4. That brings me to the skill trees. The reason I stuck with handguns is because trying to level up all those individual skills at the same time became almost impossible. Especially certain ones like athletics and engineering. I think a good change here could be either an increase into how much EXP you get form doing certain actions, a reduction in how much EXP you need, or both. Crafting needs this especially when making a legendary item only nets 300 EXP and you need 55,000 to level up.
  5. With regards to the life paths, outside of making the intros a little longer, I'd say a more meaningful quest later on would be a nice reward. Using Corpo as an example, the opening ends before you really have a chance to do anything. I think being able to actually complete the hit, or try to and botch the job, would set things up nicely. Also, actually being able to go back and stick it to Jenkins, instead of dealing with that guy who has one conversation with you. I don't need a grand overhaul, just really those two things would do it for me.
So that's really it, I mean I can talk about this game for hours but I know no one has that kind of time. To really wrap up, the response to this game has just really left me speechless. CD isn't perfect, we learned that, but they didn't burn down an orphanage for the blind. When you have companies like Konami that charge you for save slots, and EA--nothing needs to be said about them--it's worth looking at all they get right here.
Visuals can be fixed, as can performance issues. I'm playing on an Xbox One S and I think I've got my $60 worth and more. At the end of the day, if your core game isn't good, then all the patches in the world can't fix that. Here, the core story and game is fantastic, so in lets say a month, I'll be ready for a second play-through no doubt. The hate train is already starting to loose steam, which means hopefully more people will get to experience Night City and all it has to offer.
I appreciate anyone who took the time to read through all my rambling. Keep fighting, Samurais, city won't burn itself!

Why we should start saving for Xiao right now

Edit: in response of so many downvotes ala "Ha, i like Ayaka more", i change it to Xiao/Ayaka. Because same reasoning works for both of them.
*Why you should start saving for Xiao/Ayaka (if you didn't start already)? There are people, who say there is no point, cuz "CBT is CBT", and Xiao would be changed. Lets use simple logics to prove they are wrong. *

Lets talk about other factors as well. Mihoyo monitors everything in the game itself (just check Teyvat news), and what happens in community (forums, reddit, youtube, polls etc). When whine about the hacked accounts started to escalate - the next day we got mail about account security. No, seriously, their community managers work very fast. Because Mihoyo understands, that their game is far from being perfect. Absolutely any decent project has way more content than Genshin does. Genshin is crossplatform (most important it is on mobile), has awesome graphics, music and combat mechanics - but it is empty everywhere else All those (resin/loot/etc) limitations aren't just about profits - they also hide how imperfect the game is. Thats why 1.2 area is smallest but with highest density of content per sq m among all three (i bet they realised they sacrificed too much in other areas forthe size). Genshin was a high success, but it is overhyped. Imo, game is very niche - couple wrong steps and its popularity is over. Mihoyo wants to keep this profit for long. So they will babysit us and feed from golden spoon, just so we log every day, so we play the longest possible period of time, until game actually gets all the content and mechanics it misses. Bcz the longer we play - the better the chances we pay. Actually monetisation is very smart too - whales will pay any money (casino effect), they don't care - so why not to make primo price highest possible? In contrast, they made monthly card and battlepass so cheap in comparisson to primo, that it is almost irresistable. I bet their most income is from these 2.
TO SUMMARIZE the wall of text above - Mihoyo needs to keep people in game until it (game) is in stable position and gets more content. Needs people to play as long as possible. So Mihoyo has no other choice, but to work directly with community and catch any slighest wind change. They will try their best to keep community busy and happy. They won't dare to mess with us.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
BACK TO XIAO/AYAKA.
Xiao/Ayaka are Mihoyos biggest Aces, and i'm actually surprised they release him so soon(no confirmation on Ayaka, but many believe she is right after Xiao) . Prolly they will start to leak more info about next 5* soon, cuz there always should be a Joker to keep interest. Anyways, with all the above in mind - Xiao/Ayaka will be great, even after tweaks and changes. His/ her c0 would be strong. Only thing we should fear - how OP his/her constelations would be. Most hyped char - why not to make the most profits they can by making his/her Constelations ridiculously overpowered?
Ganuy could be good (at least as waifu), but Xiao/Ayaka will be better. If my prediction is wrong - Mihoyo are monkeys. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(Btw, i know my grams and punctuatiuon are terrible. This text might be unreadable. If you have any idea how to rephraze things to make it clearer - don't hesitate to wisp me, i'll edit. Thx)

MAME 0.223

MAME 0.223

MAME 0.223 has finally arrived, and what a release it is – there’s definitely something for everyone! Starting with some of the more esoteric additions, Linus Åkesson’s AVR-based hardware chiptune project and Power Ninja Action Challenge demos are now supported. These demos use minimal hardware to generate sound and/or video, relying on precise CPU timings to work. With this release, every hand-held LCD game from Nintendo’s Game & Watch and related lines is supported in MAME, with Donkey Kong Hockey bringing up the rear. Also of note is the Bassmate Computer fishing aid, made by Nintendo and marketed by Telko and other companies, which is clearly based on the dual-screen Game & Watch design. The steady stream of TV games hasn’t stopped, with a number of French releases from Conny/VideoJet among this month’s batch.
For the first time ever, games running on the Barcrest MPU4 video system are emulated well enough to be playable. Titles that are now working include several games based on the popular British TV game show The Crystal Maze, Adders and Ladders, The Mating Game, and Prize Tetris. In a clear win for MAME’s modular architecture, the breakthrough came through the discovery of a significant flaw in our Motorola MC6840 Programmable Timer Module emulation that was causing issues for the Fairlight CMI IIx synthesiser. In the same manner, the Busicom 141-PF desk calculator is now working, thanks to improvements made to Intel 4004 CPU emulation that came out of emulating the INTELLEC 4 development system and the prototype 4004-based controller board for Flicker pinball. The Busicom 141-PF is historically significant, being the first application of Intel’s first microprocessor.
Fans of classic vector arcade games are in for a treat this month. Former project coordinator Aaron Giles has contributed netlist-based sound emulation for thirteen Cinematronics vector games: Space War, Barrier, Star Hawk, Speed Freak, Star Castle, War of the Worlds, Sundance, Tail Gunner, Rip Off, Armor Attack, Warrior, Solar Quest and Boxing Bugs. This resolves long-standing issues with the previous simulation based on playing recorded samples. Colin Howell has also refined the sound emulation for Midway’s 280-ZZZAP and Gun Fight.
V.Smile joystick inputs are now working for all dumped cartridges, and with fixes for ROM bank selection the V.Smile Motion software is also usable. The accelerometer-based V.Smile Motion controller is not emulated, but the software can all be used with the standard V.Smile joystick controller. Another pair of systems with inputs that now work is the original Macintosh (128K/512K/512Ke) and Macintosh Plus. These systems’ keyboards are now fully emulated, including the separate numeric keypad available for the original Macintosh, the Macintosh Plus keyboard with integrated numeric keypad, and a few European ISO layout keyboards for the original Macintosh. There are still some emulation issues, but you can play Beyond Dark Castle with MAME’s Macintosh Plus emulation again.
In other home computer emulation news, MAME’s SAM Coupé driver now supports a number of peripherals that connect to the rear expansion port, a software list containing IRIX hard disk installations for SGI MIPS workstations has been added, and tape loading now works for the Specialist system (a DIY computer designed in the USSR).
Of course, there’s far more to enjoy, and you can read all about it in the whatsnew.txt file, or get the source and 64-bit Windows binary packages from the download page. (For brevity, promoted V.Smile software list entries and new Barcrest MPU4 clones made up from existing dumps have been omitted here.)

You May Call Me Mr. Rosie Part 3

Weeks had passed, filled with screams of terror and sorrow from Vermin and delighted squeals from Quartz, and it seemed the more Quartz Learned to act how Mr. Rosie pleased, the more feral Vermin became. And not the feral a normal fluffy would be. A mindless, evil sharp-toothed slave for Mr. Rosie. Shed even mangled her chunks of curd and raw fluffy meat into mince and mush at dinnertime. She barely clung on to maternal instincts, but she couldn't cling on to her lavender purple fluff now a mud-stained greenish purple with animalistic eyes. All she had left was her Brown foal and her Purple foal and her Pink foal.
"Vermin, today's lesson: You must go three days without food from me. You have your Purple and Pink foals as food, but touch Toffee and I'll feed you a brick slathered in glue and urchin spines. I'm going now, do not fail me." He said as he mocked her in, Quartz perched on his shoulder, and strolled on to te Casino. Quartz stared at the beach. He had the most luxurious life possible, provided he excelled in his lessons. He was fascinated by the distant pretty lights of the Sea Jasper Casino.
As he opened the doors, his ears were filled with the small talk of Gamblers, the cheers and jeers at the tables and the odd "ooh!" Of a woman dressed in suggestive clothes. He ignored it all. Their meat was tainted, he wouldn't dare eat bad meat, when their are perfect little innocents outside. He walked over to the biggest table in the room, one he'd had personalised for his own game. He sat down to join his rivals. Mr. Malchy gave him a funny look. "Who might that be on your shoulder their, Rosie? A Nice young boy for Emma you plan to cough up when you lose?"
Back at home, Vermin had been doing... alright. She had yet to eat a foal, but wanted something to bite just for the sake of it. She went through the door left open and saw a squirrel atop the fence, the only place Mr. Rosie handy rigged to deliver a nasty, yet not fatal jolt. Vermin crouched, rump in the air. With all the strength those muscular legs had, she pounced, higher than any normal fluffy. She still missed the squirrel by miles. It ran off at the first sign of possible danger and crashed headfirst into the electric fence, howling in pain, wiping her nose with her hooves. A voice called from beyond. YOU ARE WEAK, VERMIN, WEAK!" Suddenly she was surrounded by illusions of her dead foals chanting "Weak!" With glowing white eyes and pitch black tears. Vermin cowered.
Mr. Rosie's own game was basically Uno played with regular cards, with certain cards doing different things, and with £1000 at stake. Mr. Malchy placed an Ace Of Spades on a Four Of Clubs. "Hearts," He said, and Mr. Tanza placed a Seven of Hearts down. "So tell me, Rosie-boy, how special is Quartz here?" "Mo' speshuw dan yo' family twee, wich wook wike wesike-wing simbuw!" Mr. Malchy burst out laughing As Mr. Jet grunted and placed a Jack Of Hearts. He isn't much of a talker. Mr. Rosie placed a Jack Of Spades down. "Take seven, Malchy." He said with a smug face. Mr. Malchy's Laughing stopped and turned into a scowl.
Fast forward a few hours, and Mr. Rosie returned with yet again another £1000. "Behaving yourself, Vermin? No dead foals, I see?" She went to say something, but her training had revoked her ability to talk. All that came out was a grunt. Though Mr. Rosie immediately forgot her existence until the next morning, when he noticed her hacking up purple hairs. "One foal down, Vermin. Make Cherry (Pink foal) last!" Cherry had spent that day crying, until the next night, where she narrowly dodge Vermin biting her head off, and instead, tearing a chunk off her shoulder, she limped round, screeching, "DADDEH! SCREEEE! MUMMAH GIB NUMMIE HUWTIES!" He jumped down 3 flights of stairs, changing his direction as to not hit Toffee. "Shut up, SHUT UP I AM TRYING TO SLEEP!" He grabbed her tightly, causing the wound to spray bucketfuls, took her to the bend in the staircase, and threw her to the floor. She lay there twitching. He looked at Vermin. "There, if you want to waste your food, waste it now. Do not leave that corpse there until morning." She walked over and devoured it. "Clean the blood up. I shan't have blood stain my carpet." He went back to bed, happy that there would be no more whining.
End of Part three
Want to play Mr. Rosie's game, one that almost definitely was invented by someone else? Don't know how? Here's how:
1-4 players. One player deals 7 cards to each player, places one card face up (playing pile), and the rest face down (extra pile), and the player to his right goes first. Te gane order always starts clockwise. You must place a card either of the same symbol or number (E.g. if face up is 4 of clubs, you must place either a 4 or a clubs card on top, or change the symbol to whatever you want by placing any Ace card on top and saying the symbol you want to change it to). The first to get rid of all their cards wins. I you can't go due to lack of playable cards, take a card from the extra pile and miss that go, even if the new card fits the requirements.
Special Cards:
•Eight of Spades/Clubs: Next person misses their go
•Two of Spades/Clubs: Next person takes two cards from the extra pile and misses that go, even if the card drawn meets the requirements
•Any Ace card: Can be placed on anything during your go and must be used to change the symbol you must put down.
•Jack of Spades/Clubs: Next person takes Seven cards and misses that go, even if the cards drawn meet the requirements
•Red Joker: Shuffle either the Playing Pile or Extra Pile, chosen by the person playing the joker card. Either Hearts Or Diamonds can be placed on top
•Black Joker: The playing order changes from clockwise to counter-clockwise or vice versa. Either Spades or Clubs can be placed on top of the Black Joker.
If the one person who will actually play this has any questions, just ask. Also, don't play this game in a gambling match over real money. Thank you!

“Welcome to the Gates Casino in Bellevue! We noticed you’re carrying a properly registered firearm in compliance with all local regulations. We would like to remind you that when it comes to security at the Gates Casino, the house always wins. Thank you for your consideration, and please enjoy your stay.”
Action Report:
They negotiated 6000 upfront with 6000 when they finished the job. Ms. Johnson (Jen O’Reilly) produced information on her boyfriend Noel Flannigan, a local reportecelebrity who produced feel good stories about Seattle events for Horizon Corp News. Noel Flannigan went missing a few days before, and a missing person report as well as a private investigator produced no leads, so Jen turned to the shadows.
The team started by investigating Noel’s apartment, the last place he had been seen. Neurochrome hacked the complex’s R4 host to retrieve camera data and unlock Noel’s door. Joker and Saint ran interference on the neighbor while Night Train sneaked upstairs. Together, they determined that Noel had been there on the morning in question, packed up anything of portable value in the apartment, changed the codes on the locks, and fled in a great hurry around four in the morning. They also found correspondence with someone named Arnie Killarny (obviously a fake name) that led them to the Gates Casino in Bellevue, where Mr. Killarny was reputedly staying.
They cased the joint, surveying all the cars in the parking lot as well as flying a drone around the impound lot, but couldn’t find Noel’s car there. They went in one at a time to check out the casino. Night Train picked up Noel’s scent in various places in the casino and elevator, but it was well faded and several days old. Neurochrome did a little searching but asked the others to try more social avenues when he saw the security on the casino’s host. Joker and Saint approached a concierge and asked some questions. A red flag raised when they asked about Killarny, leading a manager over. With some social maneuvering and lying about working with the private investigator who previously came to the casino, they convinced the floor manager that they’d leave if he showed them what happened to Noel. He produced a video that showed Noel holding his head, stumbling out of the casino roughly 30 hours after entering, getting into his car, and driving away with gridlink.
Night Train followed the path Noel had taken through the parking lot using his sniffer. He found a place where Noel had vomited before getting in the car and chemically analyzed it with his sniffer, identifying no alcohol and the scent of disease. They sent the digital info to a street doctor contact and collected a physical sample for later analysis. The doctor got back to them very quickly, indicating that the sample was severely degraded, but estimated a 78% chance of HMHVV1, 12% chance of HMHVV2, and 3% chance of HMHVV3.
After discussing whether or not they should continue looking for Noel and potentially capture him, the team decided they should inform Ms. Johnson of their findings and look into another run with a sponsor to capture a banshee. Jen was distraught. Signs pointed to Noel visiting her in her sleep just the night before. The team consoled her and suggested she find safer accommodations for the time being. She produced the rest of their payment, and asked to be alone.

MAME 0.223

Halfway through Bioshock -- The Concept is Incredible and I Can't Stand to Play Another Minute

First of all some background on me -- maybe I'm not the optimal player to enjoy this game. I had a huge, decade-long break from gaming and came back recently, immediately playing recent AAA titles and indie gems that set a certain standard that a game from 2007 can't possibly compete with. I don't have a lot of experience with modern FPSs; I played the hell out of the ancient era (Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D, Hexen/Heretic, Wolfenstein, Rise of the Triad) but got off the train around the debut of Unreal Tournament and Half-life. I suck at aiming and shooting with a console controller, it takes me like 2 seconds to get the crosshairs aimed properly and if the enemy is moving, forget it. The game nudges you to set the difficulty to easy if you're that sort of player, so I did and I'm pretty sure this helped a lot to keep me sane. Also, I had the entire plot of the game spoiled to me due to not living under a rock.
I don't know what it is about the combat in the game that's so off-putting to me, but it feels like chewing the same biscuit for hours on end without swallowing. There are no fun gimmick weapons, just bullets and explosives; the plasmids ostensibly come close, but are mostly impractical since all the ones that actually do damage are hugely situation-dependant except for incinerate. On top of that, a core mechanic in the game is constantly running out of ammo (on easy difficulty!!), to the point where the only viable distinctive play style is "use whatever has the most ammo". To top it off, after 15 hours of gameplay I think I've run into a total of 3 or 4 different human enemies and 3 or 4 machines.
The game teases stealth gameplay -- you get a wrench and some feats that nudge you towards trying to sneak up on enemies -- but exactly 0 game design effort went into making stealth viable. I know what a stealth option looks like -- I've played MGS, Dishonored, Spider-Man -- and this ain't it. You step into the only entrance of a room and the first thing that happens is that 4 angry enemies notice you, a-la DooM. Also, a second after that a security camera activates the 1:00 minute drone onslaught that you either sit there for the full minute and tank, or else turn off by paying $20 at a "turnoff station" at the other end of the stage (seriously, fuck that mechanic so much. I have a few-months-old baby at home so I had to play on mute a lot of the time, and the warning siren is the only heads-up you get that the game is about to enter this bullshit drone mode).
Hacking is a decent mechanic and I would have derived satisfaction from it, except clearly the pinnacle of that skill is cracking open safes, which is just impossible. I managed it maybe once, by getting exceptionally lucky. I don't mean the feat is merely too difficult; I mean it's masocore, Syobon Action, "I Wanna Be The Guy", developers-pointing-and-laughing-at-you impossible, the kind that was clearly crafted carefully by the loving hand of a troll. After doing a few mid-level hacks and feeling that I got the hang of it, the first time I tried to hack a safe I just burst out laughing and failed (not necessarily in that order) during the span of two seconds. The second, third, fourth time go the exact same, and the game penalizes the player with sizeable damage each time they try again (on easy difficulty!!). The litany of "hacking power-ups" you can get makes the other hacks trivial, but makes zero difference for the safes. You end up crafting auto-hack tools just to use on safes, and then half the time once opened the safes contain 5 bullets, 10 dollars and a first aid kit. Hurray? At that point the prospect of doing actual minigame hacking seems like a joke, a difficult way to get at an otherwise low skill / low reward gameplay loop.
Level design and Traversal were not great. Some levels are veritable mazes, and the way the map is laid out really doesn't help things -- the different floors are strewn about here and there, with the fifth floor to the right of the fourth, and the third floor directly below the first. The only hint for how this haphazard collection of 2d maps fits together is a bunch of two-headed red arrows that connect each staircase end to its other end. Understanding how to go somewhere should be straightforward, and instead here I am running some god-damned graph-theoretic algorithm in my head trying to find the correct way to get from point A to point B. I went into the game with a completionist conviction, investigating every nook and cranny -- and still at the end of every other level the game would chastise me that I hadn't found all the little sisters and that if I really want to move on to the next level then fine, it's my funeral. What am I supposed to do with this warning, huh, game? I would rather suffer an aneurysm and keel over dead right this instant than go back through this entire labyrinth and find out how come I visited every single area in it, but somehow missed a screeching little girl. One specific time I said "you know what, let's do this. Let's find the missing girl" and I retraced my steps across the entire level only to end up near a specific area that I had not visited, where the map indicated there should be a staircase that should let me go there. I spent 3 minutes looking for the staircase until I found it -- small, hidden under the floor, blocked behind an indestructible grate. After wrenching the grate repeatedly, incinerating it and throwing grenades at it, all to no avail, I calmly put down the controller and made peace with the fact that some of the little sisters are just going to stay parasitic abominations forever; and as to not having enough magic plasmid juice to kick enemy ass later, then, well, fuck you, game, I'm on easy difficulty.
The Plot... crap, now I have to complain about the plot of Bioshock. I bet this is where I'm going to lose a lot of people. I get it, this game's concept was a landmark, especially in the plot-starved market of FPS games. And, playing the game, I still felt a deep appreciation for the ambitious premise and I am deeply grateful that someone sat down and made an actual game out of the moon-shot stoner thought of "hey... What about a violent shooter game... about the horrors of capitalism... based on, like, the collected works of Ayn Rand and shit". Full points for that. In that particular regard, the world needs more Bioshocks.
But... (you knew this part was coming,) maybe it's that I'm too much of a snob about these matters and maybe it's just the game showing its age, but from where I'm sitting the execution is not great. I mean, the environment and the atmosphere are flawless but the characters and sequence of events kind of fell flat for me. Bam, I'm on a plane crash. Who am I? Where was I going? What are the stakes for me? Is anyone out there waiting for me? An actual person would care about these things. Why am I descending into rapture? An actual person would take one look at the entrance and nope out of there, stand outside on the platform and await rescue. Why do I "interact" with the plasmid machine by immediately injecting myself with this substance, that I have no idea what it does, that came out of this clearly eldritch fucked-up location? What sane person would do that? If I were there I would be cautious about breathing the air. Who is Atlas? How did he get there? Why wasn't the first question out of my mouth "where am I, what is this place"? I'm going to rescue his family apparently -- when and how did they end up needing a rescue? Can I get some minimal reason to care about Atlas other than "Hi I'm a voice on the radio, and I'm your chance to survive"? Forget about his family's hobbies, an origin story, some bits of information to humanize them -- can I at least get their names? I know about the twist, but it still doesn't excuse any of it. First present a strong narrative, then pull the rug from under the audience's feet -- don't make the eventual rug pull your excuse for not bothering with the first part.
Then it's One Damn Thing After Another. The oxygen is out, so I'm going to talk to a tree lady. No, wait, Ryan remotely killed her. If he can just click a button and remotely kill people like that, how am I still alive? Fine, I'm off to see Ryan, but instead I now have to talk to this insane artist fellow, who I've never heard of, and he wants me to kill a bunch of people that I've also never heard of, and post their pictures at the casino lobby?.. And why is everyone insane? I get that the entire place went to shit, but why does the only part of the story I get is 77 iterations of "person X went insane and became the Joker, now a twisted murderous mockery of their former professional role"?
Knowing about the ending didn't really help things. From the start, I knew that the only thing I was doing with any positive moral weight was rescuing Little Sisters. Otherwise I'm just there to be a weapon and kill a bunch of poor insane people. Again, this one joy was cruelly kepy away from me because every level is a labyrinth and you can apparently go through the entire thing, meticulously combing every inch, and still miss some of them and have the game shame you for it.
So to sum up this part, I don't have any big central complaint about the plot, but a large collection of small complaints that sort of coalesce together to paint a picture. The picture reads: "Look at this concept, I mean look at it, do you need anything else? Seriously? You know you don't". Well, I do. This is the archetypal objection that artsy-fartsy critics have to genre fiction in general and SciFi/Fantasy fiction in particular, and the game just gleefully steps into it with zero pretense otherwise. I have to admit, it caught me off guard because none of the newer games I've played were so blatant about it; I guess it's something plot-heavy games started to pay more attention to some time in the last decade. Again, I suspect Bioshock was a product of its era, where "look! We care about the plot at all!" was a huge step up.
In conclusion I feel like I could have saved myself a lot of grief, and you lot this post, if before starting to play I would have really internalized that this is a game from thirteen years ago, and what this is going to mean for my gameplay experience. Sure, the remaster might take care of graphics and some minor QoL issues, but in gaming time, thirteen years is forever. The state of the art has marched on. I'm glad they made this game, I'm glad it got so much attention and that it did its part to nudge the industry and make it understand that concept matters, that artistic vision matters, and that Call of Duty was not the future. But I can't play another minute of this game. If this experience taught me anything, it's that your Disco Elysiums and your Return of the Obra Dinns will still be amazing experiences in 10 or 20 years -- but these action games age, and they age terribly. This is probably the last time I pick up any game with an element of action to it that's more than 5 years old.
